When Madison Johns began writing at the age of forty-four, she never imagined she'd make it onto the USA Today best-selling books list with her first cozy mystery, Armed and Outrageous, as an independent author. Sure, this book is an Amazon bestseller, but USA Today?

Although sleep-deprived from working third shift, she knew if she used what she had learned while caring for senior citizens to good use, it would result in something quite unique. The Agnes Barton Senior Sleuths mystery series has forever changed Madison's life, with each of the books making it onto the Amazon bestseller's list for cozy mystery and humor.

Madison is a member of Sisters In Crime. Madison is now able to do what she loves best and work from home as a full-time writer. She has two children, a black lab, and a hilarious Jackson Chameleon to keep her company while she churns out more Agnes Barton stories with a few others brewing in the pot.

The story line was good, but I couldn't connect with the characters. I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

Read as part of #Book1Cozies Club.

This book was just ok for me. I probably should've read the original series before picking this up, but because it was a holiday themed book, I really wanted to pick it up during the season. This did not have a character summary or any back story at all. It just jumped into this story like a continuation of a series, which is not a bad thing - but for me it was just slightly. I found it odd that there wasn't any backstory or anything because I've found with other series I've read that there would be at least a little in a sequel, but this had none. That made it really hard to connect with the main characters because I didn't know where they were coming from.

I found the style of questioning to be more like how a teen would go about sleuthing rather than an adult. I also didn't understand why people were so willing to provide the pair with the answers they were seeking instead of questioning more as to what their authorization to question them would be. That whole part of the story was very unrealistic to me. After reading this, I'm still not sure what their qualifications are past the fact that they've provided tips to the police in prior investigations, which lead to cases being closed.

This was a very fast read for me and I probably could've picked it up in a day if I didn't only read a couple chapters at a time. Other than the above points, the story was interesting enough to keep me returning to it and I didn't figure out who the culprit was until it was revealed, which is always a good thing. I will be trying the author's paranormal series with this character next as I think that may be right down my alley, instead of starting with the first in the regular series.

I think it was a mistake for me to read this book before reading any of the Agnes Barton books from the original series. While this is the first in a series of novellas, there is no backstory or introduction of the characters. There are several characters woven throughout the story that it seems you are supposed to already know and understand their motivations for the things they say. As a result, much of the dialog seems random and unnecessary. Some of these issues as well as some grammatical errors and typos could have probably been resolved with more editing.
From what I read about this book series and this character, many people consider them funny. Again that may be the case if you know their backstory and motivations. To me the characters seemed presumptuous and overbearing. There were also several cases where long time disputes were resolved almost instantaneously which was not realistic in my opinion.
I would recommend reading this with "tongue-in-cheek," because I don't really think it is meant to be taken seriously. Also, if you haven't read any other Agnes Barton books, I would not start with this one. I'm sure the author is a very hard working lady with a lot of fun stories to tell after working as a senior citizen's care giver. I hope to give this series another chance someday by starting with the first book in the original series.

Tom the turkey stole the show. The plot was intriguing and it was a challenge to figure out who the villain was. As usual, the characters were a hoot and fun to follow.

Madison Johns does it again with her holiday stories. It's thanksgiving and Turkey hunting season. Every one is in Tawas trying to bag the huge treasured Tom. This year that Tom has a $5000.price on his head! Everyone is looking forward to celebrating with their family and friends, busy shopping and planing their menus, normal routine holiday stuff,until.......a dead meter readers body is found with an arrow through him,the day before hunting starts. Who would kill him and why,? Well so much for Menus and diner plans for Agnes and Eleanor, because they couldn't celebrate knowing there is an unsolved murder to investigate....Good thing Andrew can cook, and Mr Wilson is understanding, but will the ladies be able to celebrate with them? And if investigating the murder wasn't bad enough, that darn turkey keeps popping up in front of them, everywhere! ..come join the adventure ..

Another Great Agnes and Eleanor mystery!

I just love this series :) Its one of my all time favorites! I'm usually pretty good at figuring out who the murderer is ,not this time! If you are looking for a new book to read, check out this series. Just love these books with the senior sleuths. These books would make awesome movies.
