The Coltons of Texas #1

Colton Copycat Killer

Rate this book
USA TODAY bestselling author Marie Ferrarella starts off the new Coltons of Texas series with a bang—and a serial killer at large.

Just moments away from marrying a woman he doesn't love, police detective Sam Colton discovers his bride brutally murdered. The only shocking clue: the MO matches another notorious killer—Sam's long-imprisoned father. A copycat? The victim's sister was the last to see her alive—and heard arguing with her. Sam would bet his life that shy, impossibly sexy librarian Zoe Robison had nothing to do with the murder. But when he learns what the argument was about, the former foster kid's heart hardens. Yet as Zoe is targeted by a madman, Sam discovers just how far he'll go to save her.

Marie Rydzynski-Ferrarella
aka Marie Charles, Marie Michael, Marie Nicole, Marie Ferrarella

Marie Rydzynski was born on March 28 in West Germany to Polish parents. She moved to America at the age of four. For an entire year, Marie and her family explored the eastern half of the country before finally settling in New York.

Marie swears she was born writing, "which must have made the delivery especially hard for my mother." From an early age, Marie's parents would find her watching television or tucked away in some private place, writing at a furious pace. "Initially, I began writing myself into my favourite shows. I was a detective on '77 Sunset Strip,' the missing Cartwright sibling they never talked about on 'Bonanza' and the 'Girl from U.N.C.L.E.' before there was a 'Girl from U.N.C.L.E.,' not to mention an active participant in the serialized stories of 'The Mickey Mouse Club.'" Marie began to write her first romance novel when she was 11 years old, although she claims that, at the time, she didn't even realize it was a romance! She scribbled off and on, while dreaming of a career as an actress.

Marie was only 14 when she first laid eyes on the man she would marry, truly her first love, Charles Ferrarella. During her days at Queens College, New York, acting started to lose its glamour as Marie spent more and more time writing. After receiving her English degree, specialising in Shakespearean comedy, Marie and her family moved to Southern California, where she still resides today.

After an interminable seven weeks apart, Charles decided he couldn't live without her and came out to California to marry his childhood sweetheart. Ever practical, Marie was married in a wash-and-wear wedding dress that she sewed herself, appliqués and all. "'Be prepared' has always been my motto,"the author jokes. This motto has been stretched considerably by her two children, Nikky and Jessi, "but basically, it still applies," she says.

In November of 1981, she sold her first novel for Harlequin. Marie, who now has written over 150 novels, has one goal: to entertain, to make people laugh and feel good. "That's what makes me happy," she confesses. "That, and a really good romantic evening with my husband." She's keeping her fingers crossed that her reader's enjoy reading her books as much as she enjoyed writing them.

Terrific opener for the new Colton series. In the beginning of the book, Zoe is arguing with her sister Celia, who is about to marry Sam Colton. Celia brags about the fact that she has tricked Sam into marrying her. Zoe is horrified and walks out on her sister for a few moments to decide what to do. When she returns, Celia is dead. Sam's brother Trevor tells him that the MO matches two other recent murders - and that of their father, a convicted and imprisoned serial killer.

The effects of the murder on Sam and Zoe are very interesting. We know right from the start that this wasn't a love match. Sam is upset over Celia's death, but it's not the devastating blow that it could be. He's determined to find the killer because, as a cop, that's what he does. Zoe is upset at the loss of her sister and also feels guilty. If she hadn't left her sister alone, perhaps she would still be alive. Whatever their feelings, both are determined to find out who killed her. Another complication is that Zoe has been in love with Sam for a long time, but he has never noticed her.

I loved the developing relationship between Sam and Zoe. Without her sister there to overshadow her, Zoe starts to stand out more. She isn't the nearly invisible wallflower that Sam thought she was, but a woman with a mind of her own. Though it isn't always easy for her, Zoe stands up to Sam and lets him know that she wants to be involved in the investigation. She also sees that Celia's deception has been a blow to him and wants to be there to support him. It was fun to see Sam's reaction to Zoe's stubbornness. He suddenly starts to see her in a whole new way. He is surprised by the attraction he feels for her as she's nothing like the women he's usually attracted to. What really gets to him is her support when he has to deal with his siblings and his father. Because of what happened with his father, Sam and his siblings were split up into foster care, so Sam has grown up keeping his emotions buttoned up. What he's feeling for Zoe is something he has no experience with and has him cautious. But when she becomes a target, Sam realizes just how much he needs her in his life.

The suspense in this book is great. There is a lot going on. First is Celia's murder, and its apparent link to two previous murders. Sam's brother Trevor is an FBI agent who is working on those. Something of great concern to them both is the similarity to the murders carried out by their father. Though he doesn't want to do it, Sam, along with Zoe for support, goes to the prison to see his father. He wants to find out if some prison groupie is modeling his actions after his father's. What he finds is a man who is dying, but still manipulative. He promises his limited help if Sam gives in to his conditions. His father also says that he wants each of Sam's siblings to visit him at the prison, and that if they do he will give them clues as to where he buried their mother's body. Lastly is the question of whether Celia was killed by the serial killer or someone else and if it has anything to do with the attack on Zoe. The ending is exciting with the mystery of the attack solved, but the murders are still happening. I also believe that the mystery of the missing body will continue through the series, as each sibling gets their book.

I liked the introduction of all the siblings. Their discussions about their father gave a good indication of their personalities. Most of them ended up in law enforcement. I also found it interesting that they all went to different foster homes, so the effects on each will probably be different. There is also a missing sister that may play a part in the long term also.

This is the 1st book I read by Marie Ferrarella. I liked the beginning. I felt sorry Zoe & Celia. I wish this story had more action then some parts of the story would not have boring. The action would have made me more interested in the story line.

Thank goodness this was a free book. This book was so annoyingly problematic. First Sam is marrying Celia because she lied to him that they had sex after a blackout drunk night. She claimed she as pregnant and he is going to do the right thing even though he doesn’t love her. Celia spills the beans to her sister Zoe as she is getting ready for the wedding. Zoe is upset and wants her narcissistic sister to tell the truth. She leaves her sister for about 10 minutes and her sister is killed. Now here are some of the problems with the book. Sam immediately takes over investigation of his dead bride to be. Really? Wouldn’t he be the prime suspect? How could he lead the investigation even before he is cleared? Another issue I had, when Sam took the letters from his serial killer father to see if some acolyte of his was a copycat killer, he and Zoe seemed to go through the letters without thinking about the chain of evidence (no discussion of using gloves, what if there was a letter that was evidence, aren’t they contaminating them with their fingerprints)? And lastly Zoe. She goes from mousy librarian to spunky spitfire. I guess when you become a spitfire, your brains evaporate from your head. At a pivotal moment, she is told to wait in the car but after five minutes of waiting she decides that her trained cop boyfriend (who was her sisters fiancé a week earlier) needs help from an untrained librarian. Of course she becomes a human shield.
If you don’t care about logic or likable characters, this book is for you.

A bit skeptic when picking up this book after it has been a while for me to read a book by this author...

And love the story plot immediately, Zoe being the wallflower sister to Celia, who ended up murdered by the Alphabet Killer and have been in love with Sam, Celia's husband to be.

But got a bit lost in the middle but then able to pick up rather quick...

A quick straight forward murder mystery. There wasn't much suspense, a bit of twisting and turning. The main characters were too linear, there weren't any mysteries to figure out about them.

This story starts out with Zoe helping her sister get ready for her wedding to Sam Colton, only problem is , Zoe is in love with him herself. she has kept her feelings for him hidden for many years and now she has to stand by and watch her sister marry him. while they are getting dressed and the guests are arriving at the church, Cira confesses to Zoe that she really doesnt love Sam, that she is trapping him into marrying her by saying she is pregnant when shes not, she only wants to marry him for his money. Zoe is furious and tells her she cant marry Sam under false pretenses and Cira laughs in her face, Zoe storms out of the room with intentions of finding Sam and telling him but she chickens out and goes back to the room to talk sense into her sister, when she walks in she finds her sister was shot and killed and has a bulls eye marking on her.

Sam , the intended groom is a detective who has a chip on his shoulder, hes mad at the world and everyone in it. He doesnt love Cira, but he is doing the right thing by marrying her because he thinks she is pregnant. Sam had a very rough childhood, His brothers and sister grew up in the foster home system. They were seperated and were all just able to find each other again. They were thrown into the system when it was discovered that their dad was a serial killer. He hated his brother so he started killing young men that looked like his brother and he left his calling card which was a bulls eye. Sams mother discovered the truth so Sams dad killed her and Sams brother walked in on his dad putting the bulls eye mark on their mom.

Sams dad is in prison but yet Cira has a bulls eye mark on her. Sam knows there is a copycat serial killer on the loose and he has to go to prison to talk with his dad to see if he can find any clues o help solve the case and to see if he will tell him where he put his moms body so they can have a proper burial.

Very good suspenseful read.. It leaves you with a cliff hanger. I will have to get the next book in series to find out what happens..

Loved this story of a quiet librarian, Zoe that was stubborn enough to become a friend to the only man, Sam, she has ever had feelings for.

Her sister, Celia, is tricking Sam into marrying her because she told him she's pregnant. Never having even spend the night even with Sam, there is no baby, just the chance to marry a "Colton".

Celia shares her plan of deceit with Zoe right before the wedding, infuriating Zoe who just wants the best for Sam. She walks back into the room and demands Celia tells Sam, but Zoe discovers Celia won't be marrying anyone that day, secretly thankful it won't ever be Sam.

Sam discovers Zoe screaming in the bridal room, and then as time goes on, He realizes he also has a true friend, someone that doesn't want to
Control him or tell him what to do, but to just walk along side of him while they find Celia's murder.

Throw in his dad, the serial killer, who killed their mom, buried her and won't tell them where she is unless they visit once a month as he is dying from cancer. And throw in a man from Celia's past looking for a key, a wedding proposal and the first clue to where "mom" is at and you have the makings of a great story!!

It's an awesome read, and hmm for some reason I'm thinking Dad may of killed mom, maybe she was the serial killer? Hmm..... looking forward to the rest of the books!!!

Spin-off series. The Coltons of Texas books are interesting read. Each of the books revolve around
serial killer,Matthew Colton, and his children. For years Matthew hunted men that reminded him of his brother in Oklahoma, Big J.
This is the first book in the spin-off series. I really enjoyed the storyline and Sam Colton’s story. He is the youngest son and he is emotionally cut off from his family and has no close friends to speak of. He is a detective for Granite Gulch PD and is about to marry a woman who lied to him about being pregnant with his child. The wedding never happens because the bride is murdered just minutes before the wedding.
Sam and the bride’s sister, Zoe, spend the book hunting for the murderer and trying to solve a drug heist that the bride had been involved in.

This book felt old with the way it was written and the comments the characters made. I didn’t like Sam or Zoe. Zoe always felt like she was worse than her sister and yet everything she does is so great and Sam is constantly impressed by her and admires her because of how different she is to her sister (who he was about to marry) and other women in general.

I was going to try to push through it, but the meeting with Sam’s father was awful and over the top with the way both Zoe and Sam acted, and I couldn’t stand to continue reading about them.

Setting: Granite Gulch, Texas
MCs: Sam Colton, Zoe Robison
POV: both, 3rd person

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a must to read. Throw in a hard hearted police officer trying to forget his past while making a new future makes anyone happy that is a love nerd. Plus throw in the hard hearted police officer finance gets killed and he is now on the lookout for the killer while protect his finance's sister. Both story lines insect and keep the story moving forward at a fast pace.

Not my cup of tea. I don't much care for virgin heroines in love with the hero from page one. Zoe just didn't ring true for me and I never bonded with her or Sam, the hero. I also didn't care for the head-hopping with all the characters. Leave a little mystery and subtext for flavor.

The blurb of this book peeked my interest, and the book was fantastic.
The book starts out with Zoe, and Celia having a fight moments before Celia's wedding. Celia had bragged to Zoe that she had trapped Sam Colton. Zoe secretly had always had a crush on Sam. She thinks what her sister was doing was wrong. Zoe walked out of the fitting room not knowing what to do. She decided to confront her sister, and demand that she tell Sam the truth. When she got back to the fitting room she was horrified to find her sister had been shot. She heard someone screaming, then she realized it was her that was screaming.

The way Celia was murdered matched the MO of two more murders. It also matched the MO of how Sam's father killed before he was caught. His father is serving a life sentence. They know it can't be him. Sam, and his brother's, and sister has not gone to visit his father in over 20 years. With life's at stake, Sam knows he has to visit his old man.

I loved how Sam, and Zoe worked as a team. Sam, and his brothers are all law enforcement. Sam is determined to find the killer. Zoe feels guilty about the death of her sister. She wished the last moments she spent with her sister wasn't with the fight they had. Zoe knows she can't bring her sister back, but she can work with Sam to help find the killer. The more time Sam spent with Zoe, the more he notices how special she is. I really loved how the relationship developed between Sam, and Zoe. Yes he was about to marry her sister, but he never loved Celia. He was a good man, and was doing the right thing. He felt really betrayed when he found out from the autopsy that Celia was never pregnant. How can two sisters be so different?

I loved the suspense of the story. I also enjoyed the action, and romance. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Colton Copycat Killer starts with the murder of Sam's bride-to-be minutes before the ceremony. She is shot and a mark almost the same as the mark used by Mathew Colton, Sam's serial killer father. Zoe Robison finds her sister and the quiet librarian finds a way to push her way into the investigation and help police detective Sam Colton investigate the new Alphabet Serial killer.

Spending time together working on the case Sam and Zoe come to gradually care for one another. They manage to catch a drug dealer and cop killer but the serial killer is still on the loose and the next victim will be in her early twenties, have long brown hair and start with the letter E, as the first book in the series ends and the mystery of who is killing these young women continue. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I want to thank Marie Ferrarella, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for my copy of Colton Copycat Killer that I won in the Giveaway.

this is the first in a new series (or sub-series?) which features the Colton siblings. The siblings were raised in foster care after their serial killer father killed their mother. I'm not sure if the characters have been introduced in earlier books by the author.
This story features Sam Colton and opens at his wedding to Celia Robinson - but she is found murdered in the prologue by her sister Zoe (who has been in love with Sam for years). So the question is who killed Celia. During the investigation Sam goes to question his father in prison and one storyline that will apparently continue thru the series is where did he bury his wife after he killed her years before.
Tho I enjoyed the characters and the story, I didn't like that so much will not be resolved until more books in the series come out.

Have you ever just wanted to read a nice easy murder mystery/ love story? Well the "Colton Copycat Killer" by Marie Ferrarella that I won from Goodreads is just the book for you. It is about a hard done by detective that finds love when and with someone that he least expects. It is sort of a double murder adventure where one murder gets solved and the other leaves you with a cliff hanger that makes you look forward to the next book in the series. It was nice to read something that covered all the parts of a good mystery with out all the swearing and vulgarity that some books have.
I look forward to the next book in the series.
Keep up the good work Marie.
Cheers

Won this book on Goodreads Firstreads giveaway. Thank You. Really enjoyed the book. The story was really captivating. I was a bit disappointed that this book was part of a series, I just wanted to keep reading, and find the answers to all of the questions I had about the father (serial killer) and his children. I'm looking forward to reading the next books in the series.

Unexpected twists, the bride gets shot in the first scene, granted she's not the sweetest of people but wow! I enjoyed how Zoe and Sam's relationship developed and how stoic Sam feelings change with Zoe inserting herself into the case to find her sister's killer.

I liked the mystery plot week enough. I was not impressed with the romance - it almost read as if it was included because it had to be. Zoe speaks about a long standing crush. Sam seems to have no emotions and then all of a sudden proposes at the end
