Gabon. (West coast of Africa) In this book written for 5th graders (it is really hard to find a book from this country) I learned that Gabon is economically and socially one of the most successful countries in Africa. Albert Schweitzer started a hospital here and spent his life caring for tribespeople. Charles de Gaulle helped Gabon achieve independence in 1946 after WWII. Manganese and Uranium are major exports and will sustain the country after their oil and timber resources run out. Education is prized and almost all citizens can read.
