After last year’s hectic Christmas, the very shy Georgiana Darcy looks forward to a holiday of peace and quiet at home with Darcy and Elizabeth. But when Pemberley’s rector cruelly and publicly censures a young girl for losing her virtue, Georgiana feels anything but peaceful. Struck by the unfair difference in how the world treats her and Hannah Brown for nearly the same mistake, Georgiana takes the disgraced girl under her wing, and though this incurs her brother’s wrath, she refuses to stand down. Everyone is shocked when Georgiana receives support from an unexpected quarter, Mr. Midwinter—the dashing young visiting curate at Lambton Church who happens to be the nephew of Pemberley’s rector. Civil war erupts at the edge of Christmas, with uncle versus nephew, brother versus sister, Lambton versus Pemberley… and even Darcy versus Elizabeth! What havoc Georgiana has wrought—and all because of her affectionate heart.
This is an insightful short story focused on Georgiana. Darcy and Elizabeth are now married, and Georgiana has benefitted from observing their loving relationship. Unfortunately, she still has not overcome her insecurity about the bad judgement she showed when she trusted George Wickham. Her brother and sister-in-law have reassured her that it was Wickham who was guilty while she was only an innocent victim, but she feels certain something is wrong with her. Throughout several Seasons, she is easily able to spot fortune hunters. Unfortunately, she also cannot completely relax with men except Darcy, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Mr. Bingley. She doesn't feel attracted to anyone, but she is not happy with the idea of remaining unmarried forever.
When Georgiana sees another young woman denounced from the pulpit at Pemberley, her guilt returns in full force. She recognizes that the same fate could have been hers. How she responds and the results of her actions signal a major turning point in the maturing of her character.
I appreciated the singular focus of this short story. Even though Mr. Brandon Midwinter quickly becomes a possible love interest for Georgiana, his main role here is to push forward the controversy which erupts, setting family members against each other in several households. The writing is excellent, and it's a perfectly constructed tale.
Overall, this is a wonderful, clean read when you want a nice dose of JAFF in one sitting and only have a couple of hours.
In this Pride and Prejudice sequel variation Georgiana Darcy wonders if she is capable of love. But circumstances lead her to help a wrongly accused girl. How will this affect everyone in the area and the new young temperory curate. An enjoyable story which I would have liked to have been longer especially the actual theme of the book
Georgiana is coming into her own, finding her own voice and standing for what she believes. An also doing a little research! I sincerely hope that the author continues this series!
An Affectionate Heart: A Pride and Prejudice Winter's Tale
This is cute story if for nothing else to read what Elizabeth's presence has had on Darcy. Georgiana has changed too. She's not the shy character portrayed in most stories. Her affectionate heart called out to her when the officiating plaster at St. Mary's Church under Darcy's living condemns a young girl in front of the whole church about losing her virginity. His nephew is the cruciate in Lambton whose living was dependent on Matlock. His nephew didn't come out and say his uncle was wrong, but did better and offered her his church to come pray in. Neighbor against neighbor, uncle against nephew, Georgiana against Darcy, and Darcy against Elizabeth. As Darcy was defending his position agreeing what was said, Georgiana lost it and yelled at him would that have been her from two years ago, how would he feel? Elizabeth with eyebrow raised looked at him and that look told him was wrong. When Georgiana visits St. Mary's to apologize for what she said to Mr. Clackston, but finds instead Mr. Midwinter, his nephew instead. After speaking about the mess she has created, she asks him for a favor. Her favor was for him to kiss her. She told him it was a scientific study she was researching. Well he finally agrees, and Elizabeth catches them. Finally Georgiana tells her what and why she asked him to kiss her. Her answer stuns Elizabeth that she wanted to know know if all men kissed as poorly as Wickham. Answering her own thoughts, she says no they don't. Meeting with both his uncle and Darcy he explains that Robert and Hannah want to have bans read so they could marry. All agree. Mr. Clackston realizes he was used to spread the gossip by Robert's jealous friend that worked at Pemberley. Christmas, Darcy is so mellow when he tells Elizabeth the former rector in Lambton had died and the church was in need of a new rector. His tells her that Matlock will probably take his recommendation of Mr. Midwinter, Elizabeth smiles and says if they haven't come to an agreement by Twelfth Night, is wasn't because of her. Darcy agrees now that now that he has a living and a parish, he can afford to take a wife. Oh, this man has changed a bit more than anybody could believe one man could!
