There is arguably no greater vision of the Christian life than the one presented in John’s letters. John wrote to churches that had been fractured by Satan’s work. Deceitful teachers were claiming that Jesus was neither real nor God. They also taught that personal holiness was unimportant. But as an eyewitness to Jesus’ life and teaching, John knew better and was more than qualified to refute these ridiculous lies. In the process of rebutting error, however, John also found it necessary to remind God’s people of their obligation to love others, even those whom John was confident were the very spawn of Satan.
