Okinawa Karate is ideally suited for close-quarters-combat. As such, the purpose of Kumite is to practice in closing the gap (with the opponent, as quickly as possible) and 'sticking' to him. Strikes are targeted at soft, hollow body cavities and vulnerable points. Punches and kicks are utilized to 'soften' the assailant, in order to apply A throw, A joint lock, or by cutting off the air or blood supply. Submission is achieved, by taking the the (air) breath, via strangulation and/or constricting the lungs. The aim of Ryukyu karate is to control & seize the opponent completely and to bring A speedy conclusion to any altercation.
