Superboy is desperate for Superman's attention. Hoping to cheer his friend up, Kid Flash tries to take him under his wing. Surprisingly, this does not end well...
These were very decent + entertaining to me. YJ is one of my favorite animated series, so I was like a kid in a candy store when I discovered this mini “series.” The artistry mimics YJs animation almost to a T, and the interaction between the main characters is believable and really allows you to picture their animated voices as you read along.
Each comic in the series serves as a kind of “in between” for episodes throughout the first season. One comic explains how the young heroes become protégés for their Super-mentors. Another, explains how Artemis saved the team and sub-sequentially joined thereafter, all from Artemis’ perspective.
All in all, it was pretty decent. You can watch the show without reading the comics, though vise versa may be difficult if you aren’t familiar with smaller DC characters.
*Note: Artemis is half Vietnamese and has a tan-olive complexion. Y’all really didn’t need to white wash her??
This is almost a slice of life type of issue, but I liked it. This takes place within a timeskip near the end of the second episode of the series, showing Superboy living with Wally for three days. It feels weird having him repeatedly ask "Is Superman gonna be there?" or "Do you think Superman knows I'm here?" when the episode made it seem like he was already disenchanted with his view of Superman.
I know that I have read some of these stories and really liked them. I liked the TV show it was based on as well. I don’t know if there’s a ‘classic’ Young Justice but I think I have a pretty good chance of liking this book.
“Stopover” starts with Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad and Superboy asking the JLA to let them use what they have been trained to do. Batman says he’ll decide in three days.
Kid Flash (Wally West) takes Superboy home to Central City with him. He explains to his parents that they broke Superboy out of Cadmus Labs and that he is a clone of Superman.
The art, by Mike Norton is really good. It mimics the TV show artwork, but is has some creative layouts and perspectives.
At the mall where Wally and Superboy are shopping for clothes for him - he only has his solar suit from Cadmus. They are interrupted by Tommy and Tuppence, the Terror Twins, outfitted rather punkishly. They are robbing a jewelry store.
They fight. But when Flash and Superman show up the Twins run away.
The next morning Batman tells them that they will be allowed to operate as a covert team for the JLA. Red Tornado will supervise and Black Canary will train.
Well, there are no surprises if you have seen the TV show, but it’s still a nice tight beginning with enough information to fill-in-the-blanks if you haven’t seen the show.
The art and the action were definitely above average and the humor was not silly or over-the-top but character based and worked well. 4 stars.
Never knew there were comics for this show until a little while ago. It's a great show, and the comics are by the same folks who made the show. Hooray!
The YJ comics are so underrated. They provide so much insight into the goings-on between episodes, especially during the time skips. Also love tat his first friend was Wally.
