Silly, silly book, with lots of ridiculous connections of people and places...and I needed a silly book right now. So it was very fun to read about this man who had lived a life of meeting every world leader for decades and actually being responsible for the successful creation of the Atom bomb. As I said, silly...and still fun. The ending is perfect.

Interesting novel of a man and his life looking back on it on the day of his 100th birthday. It kind of puts me in mind of A Gentleman from Moscow because it tells of many world events that this man was involved in and how it affected him and how the events changed the world and history.

I loved this book. It is a hilarious caper story but also a romp through 100 years of world history as told through the eyes of a a fictional apolitical 100 year old Swedish man. You have to at least know the outlines of actual world history from 1905-2005 to make any sense of the story, but the sheer zaniness of the never ending tale of action made me laugh till I cried. What a wonderful book.

I listened to the audio book version. It was a great distraction while driving. The narrator does a great job. I was intrigued at the beginning and then it got really silly. Some parts of it is unnecessarily long and tedious. However, at the same time, I wanted to continue to listen. It had some funny moments.

I haven't laughed so much reading a book before. If you embrace how ridiculous the story is and just settle in for a good time, this is a book that can leave you feeling good.
If you do need to go deeper, there's some nice underlying messages about being apolitical & happy, or just going where the wind takes you on any given day.

“Well, now you can see how sensible it is not to start your day by guessing what might happen, said Allen. After all, how long would I have had to go on guessing before I guessed this?”

“Then Allan didn’t think anything anymore. Tiredness overcame him. Everything went dark. Until it got light again ~ a white glow. Imagine that, death was just like being asleep. Would he have time to think before it was all over? And would he have time to think that he had thought it? But wait, how much do you have to think before you have finished thinking?”

3.5 I flew through the first half of the book. I can't pinpoint why the second half took me four times as long to finish; the plot built and was creative, the references to historical events was amusing (though they made me wish I were a history buff because I started getting lost in all of the over-the-top scenarios), the writing was consistent and humorous, I loved some of the characters' reactions to their circumstances (admittedly I probably confused a few of them here and there). I found myself trudging to the end.

Sort of a silly story, the 100 year old man really had quite a few adventures in his young life and then when he ran away from his birthday party he also had an adventure.....not totally on purpose. This book was okay.

I expected more...because I saw the film at the Palm Springs Film Festival a couple of years ago, and it was hilarious. Quite a tedious book, it was written originally in Swedish. Unfortunately, the English translation was sloppy as well.

Despite its charm--and a wonderful premise--this was a bit slow and repetitive in its constant playing out of the main character's innocence and importance in history. I love satire; I love quiet humor, but it didn't pull me in. I never finished it.

I really like this book and I’m happy that I’ve read it. I wasn’t particularly fond of the flashbacks though I understand the relevance. The present was hysterical while the past took away from the humor.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If you can, treat yourself to the audio book, read by award winning Steven Crossley. It’s funny, clever, engaging, interesting and heart-warming. I like to think of Alan and his friends having never-ending adventures.

Like the historical sections of the book. A journey through time and adventure.
I love how a one hundred year old man is taken from a place where he is seen as past it and journeys through adventures in the present and shows how those who have lived a life may well have really lived a life!

The first part of the book reminded me of weekend at Bernie's; the senior citizen version. Cute/fun read...maybe went on a little long, but overall good. The movie was fun too, but left out several things from the book (and changed some).

hilarious hilarious hilarious!!!! Human beings have the boon of an unlimited imagination and this book is an example of just that. This is only my second book by an Swedish author and Swedes seem to have a inherent knack for humour. It almost made it to the top of my all time favourite books (ummm after the Faraway Tree). It’s the entertaining, amusing, absurd adventures of a 100 year old man (till his 100th and after) and the satirical retelling of political history along the way. It manages to keep you entertained on every single page, an unusually hard task. It’s a laugh out loud (at some places), feel good, fun, automatically puts you in a good mood kind of a read.

It took me such a long time to finish this book and this was particularly due to all that history segments of the book. Those sections got in the way with the more enjoyable story of Allan at his 100.

I read this because some recommended it, it took me ages to get into it and I nearly gave up a couple of times. I’m glad I finished because I really did like the final quarter of the book, I don’t think I’ll read the next one though, I’m happy with where Allan ended up in this one 😊

Clever, silly story. I guess I just expected something different. It's not the best thing I've ever read, but it's worth the read.
