What a cute story The Magic Flower Shop is! I saw this on audible after looking for free audiobooks for my daughter to listen to as she struggles to sleep at the moment. We ended up listening to this together and both of us loved it! Violet loves spending time with her Aunt Abigail and has gone to spend the night at her house for the first time ever. Violet is really excited until a lady comes and Aunt Abigail ends up having to go deal with an emergency. This is where the book gets fun - Violet and her friends go investigating not only Ain't Abigails house but her flower shop too. They discover magic and spells and decide to try some out but will things end positively for them? This was such a fun listen and the narrator did a wonderful job of telling the story and the voices too!
The Magic Flower Shop is a lovely series really. The first book is available as audiobook in English, but I'm not sure about the other titles... I'm finishing this one and for sure am keen to read the rest of the series, which totals 12 titles in all so far. I didn't even notice the time while reading the 4th book, which I happened to read first :) Aunt June and Uncle Nick had never met Violet's mom, but Aunt Abigail knew everything about her. Abigail and her sister Lily grew up on the coast of Cornwall. In summertime, they swam in the sea and camped on the beach. In winter they ice skated on the river. And in the evenings their mother told them cozy fairy tales by the fireplace. Art by Joel Tourlonias
A story of magic, a nine-year-old girl named Violet, a flower shop and an ’ancient magical flower book’ of her Aunt Abigail’s that prompt Violet and her friends to find a way to use this magic for a matchmaking of two of her teachers.
Things don’t go exactly as planned, but all ends well. A fun story that will appeal to children and parents alike.
Violet enjoys spending time with her Aunt Abigail and now, for the first time, she gets to spend the night at Aunt Abigail's house. After a visit from a thin lady, Abigail has to leave to handle an emergency; Violet and her friends, the twin brothers Jack and Zack, begin to investigate Abigail's home and flower shop. While doing so, they discover that the flower shop is home to magic spells and flowers designed to make people happy. We are, of course, not surprised to find that they're going to try out some of the spells, nor are we surprised when they get themselves into trouble with their actions.
What happens when they do? Why, that's the rest of the story, and it's quite a funny and cute story. But I'm not going to tell you what happens because that would spoil it for when you read or listen to it, and that wouldn't be very nice of me to do. The narrator, Kristi Hvam, did a marvelous job, her voice pulling me in and keeping me there throughout the story. She is a narrator that I am adding to my list of ones to definitely listen to.
Review as per my 5 year old nephew: “I liked it. I would listen to it again”. Cute audiobook for our road trip, although the perhaps a British narrator would have been better.
Book Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3 / 5 stars) Audio Book Performance: ★★★★☆ (4 / 5 Stars)
Violet loves visiting her Aunt Abigail’s flower shop. But one day when a mysterious woman comes to visit, Aunt Abigail suddenly has to leave on an overnight trip…meaning Violet isn’t able to stay with her for the day! Yet, Violet’s own imagination is going wild: who was the strange woman? Why was Aunt Abigail going to Scotland of all places in the middle of winter? And what is the strange yellow book with magical flowers doing behind Aunt Abigail’s mirror?
Violet, with her friends Jack and Zack, uncovers Aunt Abigail’s magical secret, begins to uncover the magical properties of the flowers in the shop. In an endearing story about making mistakes and doing what’s right, this is a tale that all ages will enjoy!
Quite frankly, I picked up this story as a freebee on Audible. I love to listen to children’s books and middle-grade novels on Audible. There is something about them that brings me back to a simpler time. So, it is fair to note that I am not the ideal audience for this book. While it was adorable, and I enjoyed the narration, there was one element of the story that didn’t feel quite right. Children won’t notice this issue, and for the most part it can be overlooked.
So as a fair warning…there are spoilers below!
If you can get past that, the story overall is cute though, which is why I am still giving this 3 out of 5 stars, especially since I was not the target audience. Violet is a curious and precocious child, and there is a clear air of magic in the flower shop.
Children will be yearning for more by the end of it, especially to see if Violet ever learns about her magical past!
Frankly, I found this story full and aggravating. There weren't many surprises and I was constantly thinking, "No, Violet! Don't do that!" Even the twins (Jack and Zack?), who should have been fun and zany, were anything but. BUT...I'm many decades beyond the target audience so I assume this would probably be better received by the actual children it's intended for.
About the narration...sigh. I normally like Khristine Hvam, but she was so absurdly the wrong fit for this book. Her British accents go over better when used sparingly.
All in all, this was pretty disappointing.
Note: this was a free listen for Audible members.

Violet is the young girl who creates happy little endings for others. Well, at least everyone ends us happy after earnest, enthusiastic, clumsy attempts detour into funny mayhem. Violet and her dear friends learn about the business of a flower shop; even more than lessons of work, they learn about those people of their community. Violet is a clever, caring heroine who is focused on others, a refreshing perspective especially because she is a spontaneous foster child who genuinely enjoys the quirks and dreams of each person before her. What a fitting name Violet has, for she blossoms throughout this story. This is a fun story to share with your favorite young reader.
I definitely liked this book more than I thought I would. I love flowers, flower shops and children's books so I gave this audio book a shot. It was a fun, quick read and I'm really glad I gave it my time. Not quite 4 stars, but at least 3.5. It would also be a lovely book to read to a child if it had lively and colorful illustrations. I wish this was available as a book to purchase in a hard copy. Recommended!
Super cute story about a girl in foster care who doesn't know anything about her witch heritage. The story is wonderfully narrated but does end on a bit of a cliffhanger of sorts.
