Jonathan Sullivan experienced a major tragady on Prom Night that changed the course of his life and devastated the whole community.
His girlfriend Jenny lost her life in a fatal car accident.
After the Prom was over, Jonathan and Jenny were saying their goodbyes to the friends they had throughout high school. When the limo pulled out of the parking lot, they got into Jonathan's car to got to the motel. Speeding down a country back road there was an accident. Jonathan was injured but would recover, Jenny on the other hand died at the scene. They were to be married and had plans to attend university and had planned out their lives together. Both families were extremely proud of them and were devastated by the lost of her.
When he recovered he didn't want to live and staying in Chesterfield was just too painful. he thought about continuing with the plans he made with Jenny to go to university, but even that seemed to be painful, he decided to enlist in the military. The marines seemed like the best choice, and in the back of his mind, (the best way to possibly be killed.) It was in 1966 just after the US became involved in the Vietnam conflict and the recruiting drive and draft were in full swing. The marines were glad to have him. Into their third tour of duty they were recruited into a newly created top secret division of the government. (Later to be dubbed "The Navy Seals") They were sent for further training to a secret training camp where they were instructed in commando tactics and other special skills. During one of their missions Shrimp was injured and couldn't continue to be on the team. The first female graduate from the special training, Samantha Dias (Sam) joined the team. They were not happy about that at first. She proves her worth and is accepted. there seems to be some resentment from Sarg but in his mind, it's all in fun and that's just the way he treats women.

I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end. The construction of the story line was really mystery-like, and kept me reading. The characters were so life like.
