The followup to “Bonesetter,” a pre historical account of a boy in a primitive society who learns to "set bones." In this second story he’s become a young man, and the tale follows his development as a brilliant inventor of ancient technologies. New tools that markedly improve the lives of his fellow humans. He gathers others to his new tribe, gains his adult physical coordination and finishes rescuing his old tribe from starvation. Despite the awe his ideas engender in those around him, he remains humble and commits himself to helping those in need—even those he doesn’t like.
I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.
I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

Early in this book I was a bit worried it was going to turn into a teen romance with all its associated angst, fortunately this didn’t happen. Like the first book, what makes the story so entertaining is following Pell as he discovers new ways of doing things.
I have been waiting long for 2nd book in the series and the author does not disappoint at all, the creativity, flow all were amazing through out the book. I am big fan of Laurence Dahners. This is another milestone in his long series of accomplishments. I have already read all the series of the author twice(Never gets enough out of them).
Eagerly waiting for the future editions in this series and the others from the author.
I will suggest to check other series from the author, they all are amazing read.
This one is just as good as the first book. I really enjoyed reading it. The author takes you through the steps that Pell's mind goes through, which helps the story along nicely. And the addition of other characters points of view is great. Especially when they think they will run out of food.
I truly enjoyed/devoured the Hyllis family series. Thought the Ell Donsaii books thoroughly enjoyable in a refreshingly positive way... But I'm writing this review when only midway through the second Bonesetter book - because I find this particular series to be the most engaging and deeply thought-provoking fiction I've read in ages. Dahners brings alive not only the time period he's writing about, but the many thousands of years preceding... It's impossible not to stop and consider the almost miraculous --yet essentially strictly survival-based-- evolution of ideas, of communication, and of language itself. It excites me on an intellectual level but, more than that, it makes me feel Alive(!), and a part of the truly extraordinary journey of this stream of once-living souls of which each of us is a potentially important part. Or not. Dahners makes you see relationships between and among things that I hadn't associated previously; he 'wordlessly' encourages one to look around with "beginner's eyes and mind, and it's a uniquely rejuvenating experience. Thanks, Mr. Dahners - I know the attraction of music and painting, but I'm sure glad you took up novel writing!
Book 2 finds Pell back at the Cold Springs tribe still coming up with new ideas to help his small tribe survive. Meanwhile the evil medicine man Pont has joined a new tribe and begins to poison them against Pell. They send their flint knapper Yadin to spy on Pell and his tribe to see if there is an evil Spirit present. Yadin not only sees no evil Spirit but decides to join Pells tribe himself. But Pont won't give up still wanting Pell killed. There is another battle coming.
Author Laurence Dahners continues Pell’s story in a engaging and well constructed story as the challenges of survival are faced and surmounted. The characters seem very real and I found myself caught up in their struggles and achievements. Definitely looking forward to the next edition.
Congratulations to Lawrence Dahners for this amazing series. It’s hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Loved the whole 3 book series. I wish he would continue Pell’s journey. The third book leaves me wanting to follow Pell through adulthood, children, his relationship with Gia and members of his tribe.
Lawrence Dahners never fails to deliver a wonderful story while providing interesting science fiction. And there is always room for a large dollap of human decency.
Good sequel. I look forward to Pell tracking the sun to establish the arrival of Spring. I would like for the author to stop using proper noun verb contractions.
Once again Laury has created an engaging and thought provoking tale .
I am amazed at the creativity of this author .Time and again he has managed to entertain and at the same time send his own message to his readers. On top of that, unlike so many of his profession,he leaves you feeling good. I applaud him and his work and am always eager to wait ( hopefully not to long) for his next effort.
This book was a wonderful book on overcoming problems. Pell (bonesetter) looked for ways to survive and help others. He and others helped him to have many inventions that helped the tribe and himself. The story has love, forgiveness and kindness. I think a good role model for others. I really enjoyed the book.
Like The Clan of the Cave Bear, etc, but without the sex and mysticism. It's not as fully developed & polished as CotCB, but neither is it a 500+ page monster that spends pages & pages describing different plants.
Well written, good characters good solid story. The first might have been a little better read. Better read from character creation and a stronger storyline due to more feeling of perils. I found it to be worth price and time to read.
What a wonderful addition to this hopefully series. I hope more stories follow. It's fun to see the basic science of discovery from a primitive point of view. Well done and I hope there will be more
