5 - "A mated male is... Temperamental." Stars!

I absolutely love this series, Kate Baxter brings another couple together through each book, whilst still running the bigger story concurrently.

I must admit the space between books means it takes me a few chapters to refresh myself on the whole Sortiari situation, but it never takes long for me to get right back into the story.

The Dark Vampire is Eric Jenner’s story, we have seen glimpses of him through the previous books although the author hasn’t given a huge amount about what makes this guy tick away, you are given the impression he is a vampire with only a few specific requirements.

He fucked. Fed. Survived.

Bria Fairchild, has pretty much spent her life locked away behind the closed doors of her uncles compound, he believes it is for her protection, but little does he know that she spends her evenings sneaking around town in her own special way…

Jenner is your typical gruff, growly alpha Vampire, so when Bria’s uncle brings her to Mikhail’s mansion with life ending injuries one evening, the last thing he expects is for their souls to tether to each other after she has been turned, as she is in essence the opposite of everything he is, and he believes himself completely unworthy of a woman so beguiling and pure.

Her presence was the calming warmth to his cold cruelty. Her touch a gentle balm to his abrasive violence.

Except she isn’t as innocent as he initially assumed, and what ensues is a battle of wills, hormones and pretty much everything in-between for them.

"You blood is like a drug… Just a sip and I’m wired."

Bria wants him, but he is not sure he can hold onto his control well enough to be the gentle and caring lover he thinks she needs.

"I know you want me… Why don’t you do something about it."

I absolutely devoured this book, the push and pull between this pair that plays out around the bigger story going on made it totally unputdownable. Both vulnerable in their own ways, Jenner believes he is doing the best for his mate when he tries to keep her away from the action and out of his bed, when in essence he is doing the same to her, as her uncle has done for the previous ten years.

"Today is the first day of my existence."

Reading her fighting her way through and out of that over-protective shell that both men try to keep around her was really enjoyable.

The Last True Vampire series has got plenty of life left in it yet, lots of questions still remain unanswered in the main theme of the story, and with a plethora of secondary characters including Chelle, Siobhan and Lucas that I want to see find their own Happy endings… Well as happy as they can be when you have half the Supernatural world wanting to kill, capture or drink your blood! I cannot wait for more from this series and hopefully soon!

This is a turning point.

If you’re a fan of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood or Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series, then you definitely need to check out Kate Baxter’s Last True Vampire. It’s been a long time since I’ve found a book that has captured my attention like this one has. There was a time when I pretty much only read Paranormal Romance because I enjoyed it that much but the genre has kind of taken a back seat in the more recent years but THE DARK VAMPIRE has rekindled my love for vampires and Paranormal Romance.

Eric Jenner is as wild and as dangerous as it gets. A one-and-done kind of guy, he isn’t a man who is willing to stick around. For him, only sating his hunger is what he cares about. But when he encounters Bria, a sassy but harbored vampire, something ignites within him. Their chemistry is instant and electric, charging this book with passion and intensity. Baxter has really found her niche with this book. Both characters are interesting and offer so much to the series. While Jenner can be intense at times, I loved how he softens for Bria. It’s a side of him that I don’t think we’d ever get to see if it wasn’t for her.

As I mentioned earlier, there are quite a few similarities between this series and Ward and Adrian’s. I definitely think that if you’re a fan of either one that you’ll fall for this series hard. While there’s plenty of action and worldbuilding present, I think the best thing about this book is the romance. Baxter delivers it so well that I think it will be a favorite for many PNR lovers out there. THE DARK VAMPIRE is my favorite of the series by far!

I really tried to stick with this because i remember liking book 1, but the so-called hero in this one put me off. Too many sex scenes with OW. No infidelity, at least in the first third, but he does think about having sex with/feeding from OW when he’s getting hot and heavy with the heroine. Gross! AND he’s just returned from a three day bender of sex when he meets his supposed soulmate. Bonus: he’s a total asshole to the heroine, even though she’s supposedly his destined soulmate or whatever bullshit. No thanks.

This series is going from strength to strength and I now have a new favourite hero in Jenner. If you like your heroes dark and brooding with a side of protective alpha and incredible skills in the bedroom you're going to fall for him just as hard as I did. We've all seen in the previous book that Jenner is a vampire with large appetites, he is fighting for control and coming close to losing it so he is absolutely terrified of getting close to Bria in case he hurts her. From the moment he sees her she tempts him more than any other and even the return of his soul, thanks to their tether, isn't enough to make him trust himself to keep her safe. Jenner sees Bria as everything that he isn't, she's from a privileged background and led a very sheltered upbringing so he is sure he'll never be able to give her what she needs.

What he doesn't realise is that Bria is sick of being treated like a prized possession by her family and she has no intention of letting her mate do exactly the same thing. She may have been sheltered but she knows exactly what she wants and needs and that's the freedom to be herself and to explore the world around her, she spent her whole life trapped in a gilded cage by her uncle and she never wants to feel that way again. What she wants from her mate is a man she can share love and passion with but also someone who will treat her like an equal in every way. She is sick of being seen as weak and she's determined to stand on her own two feet for once. I really liked how strong Bria was, she stands up to Jenner when she needs to and she won't let him intimidate her with his caveman routine.

These two make a great couple, Jenner has very good reasons for being worried about hurting Bria but she knows him better than he knows himself. She can see exactly what he needs and she's not afraid to let him have it. Jenner was the right amount of protective alpha mixed with attentive and adoring lover, it took Bria a long time to break through his walls but once she did there was no stopping him! This was definitely the hottest book of the series so far but I love that Kate Baxter really takes time to develop the emotional connection between the couple alongside the physical one.

I'm really enjoying seeing where this series is going, it has similarities with several other popular paranormal romance series but enough differences to stand out from the crowd in it's own right. I'm a little nervous that the next book might end up being about Siobhan and Christian but I'm hoping I'll be proved wrong on that since I'm not much of a fan of either of their characters. I really want to see more of Chelle, Lucas and Saeed though so I'm hoping we'll get on of their stories next and Siobhan can continue to have her story told in the background of each book. Either way I'll definitely be continuing this series, I'm enjoying the world and I want to see what happens to the characters I already love as well as the ones we're only just being introduced to.

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
'The Dark Vampire ' by Kate Baxter is book three in the "Last True Vampire" series.
I have not read the other books yet so for me this was a standalone book.

This book is about Jenner a Vampire and Bria. Jenner has issue from his past that make him what he is today...which seems to use women for sex and blood. Never getting enough of both it would seem.
Bria is a sheltered girl whose farther was a Vampire but her mother was human. They were both killed and her Uncle has been keeping her sheltered as much as he can from the world. There is a witch that is after Bria and her Uncle has been protecting her by hiding Bria.

Bria has been slipping out from her Uncles place and on one of these trips she is attracted. Her Uncle takes her to some Vampires that he has just hired to help protect his niece. The Uncle ask them to turn her so she won't 'die'.

Once Bria is turned she stays with the Vampires group for a few days before meeting Jenner. Once she and Jenner meet they find that they are 'mates'. Jenner can't fight this but is upset that Bria is such a nice girl and that he is afraid of hurting or killing her. So Jenner Tires to keep his distance..but it is impossible.

Enjoyable, but I did not find hero likeable. He seems one-dimensional and always on the edge. There is a perfectly acceptable reason for this, but, for me, it is a little one-note and over the top. His inner dialogue becomes tedious and it's drags the pace of the story. I did like Bria to a certain extent. I understand her need to exert her independence after being sequestered for so long. Her story highlight of the book.

This is the third book in there series and the background with each story is so interwoven and gets even more complex as each book comes a long.

This is Eric Jenner's story and we have seen him in previous books and loyal muscle and is now third in command to the Vampire King.

Jenner's transformation however has not gone as easy as Ronan's and he struggles with his desires for blood and his lust for sex. His past also causes him problems but it is only in tethering with Bria that he finds that the past is no longer the true him.

Bria has been kept a prisoner in her home for centuries by her uncle, but has been on the parkour scene and like to do geocaching. She has been escaping at night for years unbeknownst to her uncle, however with a request for her protection to the Vampire King her entire world changes.

Bria is another strong female in which her male counterpart thinks that he knows better and that she could not possibly be the woman for him and she is so breakable. Jenner soon learns however that Bria is much stronger than she looks and is every bit the woman who completes him.

Another breathtaking book that captivates and pulls you along.

."Jenner was dangerous. Dark and violent. Since the day
they'd met he seemed to balance on the razor's edge of his control.
And Bria wanted him more than she'd ever wanted anything in her entire life."

This is the third book in the paranormal series and having loved the first two books, I was excited about reading this one. "The Dark Vampire" is all about the dark and moody vampire Jenner who I had briefly met in the previous book. I wasn't sure how I truly felt about Jenner, he was so temperamental with an hard edge to him that appeared impossible to crack, but there was something about him that made me curious and I was keen to get to know him better. I hoped that, as the story continued Jenner would lose some of his harshness and he could win me over. I really did want to love him but he wasn't my favourite of the vampires that I have met so far.

Now Bria, I did like. She seemed so sweet and innocent, however once I got to know her I realised how strong and determined she was. Bria was the perfect match for Jenner because she wouldn't put up with any of his crap. I was eagerly waiting for Bria and Jenner to get together, longing for the story to hot up and for me to change my feelings for Jenner, however Kate Baxter kept me waiting quite some time before any of those things happened. Bria and Jenner's relationship was not as straightforward as I would have liked.

."He'd known from the first moment he stared into Bria's
beautiful amethyst eyes that she would be the cause of his destruction."

Once Bria and Jenner did finally become a couple, the sparks flew and I wasn't surprised. This author is brilliant at writing passionate sex scenes between her star couples, so I was fully prepared for some hot reading! Lol. I loved seeing Bria and Jenner together, it was a relief to finally see them so in love. The only problem was that there was so much going on around them that I felt there wasn't enough time to enjoy Bria and Jenner's relationship. Out of the three books so far, I thought that this one focussed more on the other characters of the paranormal world rather than just the main couple, so I was left feeling like I didn't get enough Bria and Jenner.

."With every passing day Bria lost another piece of her heart to Jenner."

I am yet to discover if this is the last book in the series or if others will follow. I am sure that there is room for other books with the characters that I am still to explore and because I have enjoyed this series so far, I will be keeping my eyes peeled for another instalment.

Review:

I really am bad about researching about books before I read them. This is book three in the series and though I was not too confused, I sure wish I would have found this series sooner! Now I need to go back and read the others.

I love supernatural stories and this story sure fulfilled that love. It is a story about vampires, but I like that the author mixes in other supernatural beings. I was drawn in on page 1. Jenner is although, mysterious, broody and of course alpha male. He is also insecure and worried that he might hurt others then fate gives him a mate and things get really interesting. Bria, for her protection has been hidden away all of her life and then she is almost killed, made into a vampire and gets a mate. She is sheltered and innocent, but by no means a doormat and gives as good as she gets. Jenner and Bria with their opposites attract, were quite enjoyable to read. They both had their hands full and at times it made the story exciting, dramatic and sexy. I particularly liked the idea the author had about the tethering of the souls for mating vampires, I thought it was unique and gave the story an interesting twist on other vampire stories. I thought she did an excellent job creating a new vampire world/story. Now I have to find the time to go and read the other books in the series.

BOOK REVIEW: The Dark Vampire: A True Vampire Novel
BOOK SERIES: Last True Vampire
AUTHOR: Kate Baxter
GENRE: Paranormal Romance
PUBLICATION DATE: May 3, 2016

CLIFF HANGER: No

4 Dark Sexy Vampire Stars

SYNOPSIS:

PASSION RULES IN DARKNESS.

Jenner is a newly turned vampire who stalks the night like a wild beast of prey, hunting and feeding his appetites with a string of willing women…and always wanting more. Nothing can satisfy the aching hunger that burns inside him—until he crosses paths with a beautiful, innocent vampire who sets his soul on fire.

Bria has never been able to escape the confines of her uncle’s home. But when the smolderingly sexy Jenner saves her—and promises to be her bodyguard—Bria is brought to a dark world of dangerous, insatiable desire. But once they feed upon each other, they expose themselves to an evil that they never saw coming…and now there’s no turning back. Will they divide and conquer—or stay together and lose it all to lust?

MY THOUGHTS:

What’s not to love about a dark, handsome, broody vampire? Whew he was something! This is the first time I have read this author and this is book three in the Last True Vampire series. You could read this as a standalone, as I was able to read it with very little question as to what was going on. I think I would have liked to have read the other two books prior, but it is not necessary, as each book deals with one particular couple. There is a good supporting cast of characters and good character development. There are good witches, dark magic performed by bad witches, shifters, faes, and forces trying to get rid of the paranormal beings. If you are a fan of J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood, which I am, then you will enjoy this book and I am sure the series.

Bria was brought up being extremely sheltered for her own safety, but she craved the outside world and would sneak out to escape the confines of her coven, not knowing the dangers lurking. There is an uprising to eradicate the dhampir covens and Bria is near death and is brought to the Vampire King to be saved. Bria is turned from a dhampir to a vampire. This is where it really gets interesting!!

Eric Jenner (goes by Jenner) is passionate in all things and the ultimate consumer of sex, blood, and danger. He does not trust himself because of unfortunate circumstances as a young dhampir dealing with bloodlust. He is made out to be out of control and he lives that role to the fullest. He is an enforcer for the King and upon his entrance to the Kings home, he is hit with bloodlust and the possessive “mine” feeling in his guts. He is immediately tethered to Bria as she is to him. They have a bond that is immediate and absolute. Jenner wants to consume Bria sexually and take blood from her vein, but he doesn’t trust himself with her, for he fears he will destroy her.

Bria and Jenner have power struggles and growing pains as a couple. Their chemistry is off the charts! At times I was so angry at Jenner for not trusting his mate, but I could see it from his viewpoint as she was the love of his life and he needed to protect her at all costs. There are family dynamics involved, there is a bit of betrayal and lots of intrigue and secrets. Jenner grows to find his mate is just as much his equal and is stronger than he ever could have imagined.

If you love a good love story, broody vampires and strong heroines then this is the book for you. I highly recommend you give it try!

Bria lives in her uncle's compound, being protected from a witch. Now that she's grown, the protection she's been under is stifling and her uncle is forced to go to the vampires in search of help. He is an ass. Aristocratic dhampir who is very against dhampirs becoming vampires. Bria can't stand being caged and held back by her uncle any longer and escapes as often as she can.

Jenner seems to be hanging onto sanity by a thread. He's getting his job done, but his urges are threatening to take over and he wonders if this was the life he really anticipated. Meeting Bria really throws him and his protectiveness causes some issues.

I really liked Bria's character. She's spunky and independent. A great challenge for Jenner and he really needed that in his life. He needed a focus, although his feelings for Bria overwhelm him and make his job difficult.

The Dark Vampire gives us some great adventure in dealing with Bria's witch. However, I also really enjoyed seeing all of the other characters and how their lives are continuing on. Mikhail, Ronan and Jenner have a lot of politics to deal with, as well as side issues that need to be controlled to portray vampirism as a positively as possible. I'm really curious about Vanessa and her abilities. Wondering just how she is going to fit in.

So many ups and downs in The Dark Vampire, and such an enjoyable ride it was. I was left smiling and satisfied with all the goodness wrapped up in this book. I look forward to The Untamed Vampire, with it's couple and the continuation of Mikhail rebuilding the race of vampires.

It's been a few months but Jenner has moderation issues with risk, bloodlust and sex. His new assignment will be to watch over a dhampir stalked by a witch. Or so says her uncle. Bria's been a virtual prisoner in her uncle's coven but when they're attacked by the Sortiari, Bria's uncle pledges fealty to Mikhail in exchange for turning Bria into a vampire.

For innocent Bria the change means freedom, power and strength, she'll no longer be under a man's thumb and constantly protected. As soon as he walks into the house, Jenner's assaulted by Bria's scent and voice. Racing to her side he realizes they've been tethered and after one look at the dangerous vampire in her doorway, Bria realizes it as well.

Jenner's overwhelmed. He's still learning to cope with his vampirism, controlling his excessive appetites now he has a mate that needs him to teach her not only vampirism but the dangers of the world in general. Together and apart, Jenner and Bria struggle with their new reality and Jenner does the right thing for the right reasons but does it all the wrong way for Bria's needs and comes off more as an ass.

The overall arc made progress on many fronts. Claire has the baby, Vanessa exhibits more power than anyone new she possessed. Chelle' pushes past Mikhail's constraints, much to his chagrin. Siobhan's flirtation with the wolf may not be as innocent s it seems and the Sortiarti tries to arrange a visit at Mikhail's.

I loved this one. This book was a fantastic entry to Kate Baxter's Last True Vampire series. The interesting mythology of this supernatural world, the vibrant characters and catchy liquid plot easily captured my attention and made it hard to put my Kindle down until the last page was turned.

True mates Jenner and Bria were at the point of no return until their souls were tethered. Jenner finding it hard to control his vampiric appetite for blood and sex, and Bria craving her freedom so much she was ready to die for it. Yet being soul mates didn't solve all their problems. Jenner's stubborness caused him to keep distance between them but of course he felt it was for her own good. Bria had to get her independence the hard way which almost cost her life.

I loved the characters and adored Bria from the beginning. She had so much courage and daring. She was sheltered but it never stopped her from finding her own sort of adventures. Jenner was a possessive male so they butted heads a few times. The plot was complex with a couple of intriguing sub-stories and other characters that I hope will get their own books. All I have to say is this was a great book.

I'm a sucker for a good vampire story and the best part is, this not only have vampires but also witches, shifters and a even fae. Jenner, the Hero, has my favorite characteristics. He's strong, fierce, cold and possessive. Bria, while having been shelter most of her life, has an innocence to her but she is also very strong and fierce. She was a great counterpart to Jenner. While I hated that the first half of the book Jenner kept Bria at arms length, once he let his guard down was also when the story really picked up. I have not read the first two books in the series, however, I loved all the characters and will definately go back and read them.

I loved this book. This series just keeps getting better & better. I really hope the next book is about Chelle. I really want to know more about her. We got a brief glimpse of her towards the end & what we were given really interested me about her future. Brenner & Bria after some ups & downs really turned out to be a well matched couple. Quite steamy in places :)))

It's a good book that will definitely keep you entertained, but it's a little repetitive. One thing that bothered me A LOT is that I found 2 BIG mistakes. During the course of the book it seems that the author, and the person revising the book, didn't pay much attention and names where swept. For exemple, it was talking about Ronan's thoughts about a situation and instead of Ronan's name it was Jenner's. Not a big deal, but you would think that the person who is hired to revise the book before it's release would have caught it, specially because it happened in 2 different situations, with different characters.

Jenner has an insatiable thirst for blood and sex. Bria has been hidden away from the world since she was born, due to a witch that has sworn to kill her blood line. What happens when Jenner and Bria become tethered? A great book with all of the character's (for the most part) from the other Last Vampire Books in it. Be sure to start with the Last True Vampire and work your way through the series so you understand what is going on. I am truly in love with the world that Kate Baxter has made and hope that she has great ideas for the rest of the characters that are showing up in her books!

I love this series. This one is about newly turned vampire, Jenner. He has had a bad transition from Dhamphir to Vampire. He has a need for sex and blood that cannot be quenched. Bria Fairchild is a spoiled Dhamphir. When they get together all bets are off. This book had so many things going on I just couldn't put it down it was that exciting. Loved it.

I enjoyed this, although I'm starting to see a pattern - a woman perceived as weak who must prove her strength and an overprotective mate who has to accept that strength. Nothing wrong with it. It's just a pattern. There's a lot of interesting threads woven through the story which kept me interested.

This series is turning out to be a favorite these vampires are so very passionate when they love. Jenner is all male all the time very broody and quick tempered in walks Bria and his world tilts on its axis. Find out how she tames this big ole teddy bear.

This book was fantastic!!! I love a book with hot sex scenes and this did it for me!!! Wow! Bria and Jenner’s chemistry was great and I enjoyed the plot. The story continues and we are learning about new characters. I’m addicted to this series!!! I want more!!!

Better

This book was alot better the Ronan's story. Alot more happening. Not boring. I didnt need to skim it. The series is still not one of the better vamp series of books I have read but it's not bad.

Every time I heard someone call each other "female" and "male", I swear I lost brain cells. Hero made me roll my eyes and heroine wasn't any better. If I was tethered to either of them as a mate, I'd runaway and never come back, not feeling my soul be DAMNED.

I love when a series is still awesome when the third book is just as good as the last 2!!! On to book 4!!
