James C. Collins is an American researcher, author, speaker and consultant focused on the subject of business management and company sustainability and growth.
Though Jim Collins went on to write "Good to Great" for a much bigger audience, this book, a precursor, was written specifically for entrepreneurs scaling from a handful of employees to tens, or hundreds. The title of the book thus makes more sense as you complete it: "entrepreneurship" is about discovering a business model that survives harsh market realities, whereas "beyond entrepreneurship" is the creation of a lasting, sustainable company. This is the focus of the book: how to get beyond survival and toward sustainable growth. I read this book because Reed Hastings said it was one of his favorite business books, and when I completed the book, I felt the same way.
Although written in the early 90's, I believe the concepts provided are still relevant today. This book communicates very simply and easily how a business can turn into a great company, by focusing on 5 key areas; leadership, a company's vision, creating a strategy, being innovative & tactical excellence. I found this book didn't provide 'new' concepts but provided a deeper perspective on known concepts, which is rarely communicated within books.
Another Jim Collins classic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to any entrepreneur that’s looking to take their business to greater heights of excellence. I particularly like the assertion that leaders don’t fit any specific personality profile - some are quiet, some are charismatic, others are shy and so on.
I just finished reading Beyond Entrepreneurship (or BE as it’s often shortened), and honestly, it's one of those books that sticks with you—not because it’s full of groundbreaking buzzwords, but because it’s so clear and grounded.
Jim Collins (yes, the Good to Great guy) co-wrote this one with his mentor, Bill Lazier, before he became a household name in the business world. This book focuses less on big business theory and more on what it actually takes to build a company that lasts. It’s written with small to mid-sized business leaders in mind, but the lessons easily scale.
What I appreciated most is how it balances visionary thinking with practical leadership. It talks a lot about building a strong company culture, aligning your team with a shared purpose, and being brutally honest about your weaknesses. There’s a strong emphasis on values, discipline, and long-term thinking—not chasing the next flashy trend.
The updated edition (BE 2.0) also includes some new reflections from Jim Collins, which helps connect this book to the larger body of his work. If you’ve read Good to Great or Built to Last, this adds more depth and personal context.
It’s not a fast-paced, page-turning kind of book, but it’s full of insights you’ll want to underline and come back to. It feels more like having a long, thoughtful conversation with two wise mentors who genuinely want to help you lead better—not just manage more.
If you’re a founder, a CEO, or even just someone trying to lead well in any organization, Beyond Entrepreneurship is absolutely worth your time.
"Beyond Entrepreneurship: Turning Your Business into an Enduring Great Company" is an exceptional guidebook for entrepreneurs and business leaders seeking to build long-lasting and successful organizations. Written by Jim Collins and William Lazier, this insightful book goes beyond conventional entrepreneurship literature by emphasizing the importance of creating enduring greatness rather than mere short-term success. With a blend of practical advice, real-world case studies, and profound insights, the authors provide a roadmap for transforming a business into an enduring great company. They delve into essential topics such as leadership, company culture, strategy, and disciplined execution, offering valuable strategies and actionable steps for achieving sustainable growth and long-term success. "Beyond Entrepreneurship" is an invaluable resource that inspires and equips entrepreneurs to build organizations that stand the test of time.
This book is amazing. The authors also delve into the intricacies of strategic planning and execution. They provide practical frameworks that guide entrepreneurs in setting and achieving their goals. One of the key takeaways is the importance of adaptability; in an ever-changing business environment, the ability to pivot and respond to new challenges is vital. Collins and Lazier advocate for disciplined execution—an approach that combines strategic foresight with meticulous implementation. By focusing on both planning and execution, entrepreneurs can transform their visions into reality, ensuring that their organizations remain relevant and resilient. I like it and geometry dash lite which is awesome.
Lots of generic advice that can be found elsewhere. What’s unique about this book is that it has systems to articulate the key ingredients of talent, management and creativity.
It feels a bit like a textbook on entrepreneurship which I guess is what this book supposed to be about.
