wow - adored this book! beautiful coffee table book but also a compact pleasure to read. chapters are organized thematically and takes the reader through the extent of his work alongside his life. renoir was a constant companion. impressionists were not taken kindly to by the art world (e.g. the Salon, where critics love to be ruthless). ups and downs with his muse and first wife Camille were heartfelt. the influence of japanese culture and japanese wood block prints are referenced. i noticed a good proportion of his pieces are now on display in japan; perhaps a mutual appreciation. by the end of his life he settled in Giverny with a large family and finally financial stability. he cultivated his gardens there and produced the water lilies.
