The Revenant #1

Shadow Soldier

Rate this book
When the Purge nearly wiped out humanity and gave rise to the Allied Races Coalition, Roux Jennings refused to become a paranormal’s new pet. Forced into hiding, she remains constantly on the move, never staying in one place for too long. It’s a harsh existence filled with too many dangers and not enough food, but at least she’s free.

Coalition Captain Deke Collins is tasked with protecting the citizens of Trinity Grove—both human and paranormal alike. Presenting the mask of a loyal and dutiful soldier isn’t always easy, but it’s a necessary evil. If anyone discovers he’s the leader of a group of rebels secretly known as the Revenant, he won’t live to see the next sunrise.

When circumstances force him into the path of a beautiful and tenacious female, he’s immediately drawn to the human. Dragging Roux into his world may put her in more danger than even he realizes, but it’s a risk he must take to protect her.

In a reality where paranormals rule and humans are nearly extinct, lines are drawn, sides are chosen, and a war for freedom rages in secret.

The premise of this book held a lot of promise. The writing was fairly strong at the sentence level and the characters were interesting, but when the plot deviated from the Roux and Deke's relationship, it was rife with holes and really unclear sometimes. So, if you don't mind a bit of a hazy backdrop, this love story had quite a few really good moments.

4.5 out of 5

Hard to believe but this is the first paranormal book I’ve read this year. I sure took my time. This is a dystopian romance, a subgenre and one that I like. I love dark and gritty when I’m in the mood for it.

In this book the world we know is gone forever. There was a ‘purge’ and most of humanity has been wiped out giving rise to other kinds of creatures that were hidden. Werewolves, Shifters and Vampires struggle for dominance and Humans are now lowest on the pecking order.

Roux Jennings is our heroine and she is in a dark place. She’s in hiding and on the run and just trying to survive along with a small rag tag group when she is captured by Captain Deke Collins, a squadron leader in his area and a Shifter. He recognizes right away that Roux is his mate but is also aware that he must be patient if he wants to win her trust. She feels something between the two of them but she’s also been taught that the other inhabitants are the bad guys who want to completely eliminate the humans that are left. He takes her to the town he works out of and she sees that what she believed was a lie, that they work to protect humans along with other species and is horrifies to learn it’s really humans that have caused the near destruction of their own race.

But there are a lot of powerful enemies to whom life holds no value and this is just the start of an epic battle coming. I didn’t realize it until I got to the end but this book didn’t end. It was more like just a chapter ended and there is a lot more to come.

I was more than intrigued after reading this book to see what else is coming their way. Can Deke and Roux make it as a couple? Will good prevail? I can really see me getting lost in this world and anxiously waiting for each new book to see what holds for the players.

Dark,morbid, heart wrenching, war

This is a very dark story of monsters, good & bad, mating, lots of death and war. The good guys get killed in this book and there is a significantly morbid scene, torture and destruction. This was a very imaginative and action packed story, however it wasn't my mind of story. I don't enjoy dark deadly tails so this book wasn't to my liking. I gave this a 4 because it was well written and for the right person this was a good story.

I didn't realize it but I had read this book when it first came out. It's still really good. I like that this is set in the future but feels like current time. The author did really good with building the world to a point where you didn't get bored and the characters come to life.

Shadow Soldier (The Revenant Book #1)

Kali Argent

The world as they knew it was gone. Changed, it was now run, kill or be killed. Roux Jennings was on the run with her little group of survivors. They were ragtag humans left in world where humans were only few of those left. Shifters, vampires and the Gemini ruled now in an only the toughest and strongest survive. They called it the Purge. Afterward the Allied Races Coalition was formed, with everyone on top of humans. North America had been divided into territories, ruled over by paranormal families. Nothing ever would be the same.

Roux, Nevah, Cade and her group were trying to get away from Trinity Grove when they were ambushed. This is where Roux meets Capt Deke Collins. Deke was one of group who patrolled the area. Peacekeepers so to speak. Roux was taken aback by his kindness. He allowed her to shower, eat and sleep. Instead of being taken to Bastille where the others were, she stayed with Deke. And took care of her, protected her. Then she meets Abby, another human. Abby belongs to Peter the town baker. Deke and Roux settle into a kind of antagonistic relationship. He protects and she tries to get away, and then she starts to care. Life goes on. Then people started to disappear. Everyone is on edge. Strange things happen. Who or what is doing it? Is it really safer in town? What is Dekes secret? For these and others answers you need to get a copy and find out. Oh and don’t get caught out at night, you just might disappear too!

Author gifted this ARC in exchange for my review.

What a little jewel this turned out to be, a full novel bursting with story and amazing characters. Kali introduces you a world after the Purge. Its this world the strong survive to rule who's exactly ruling, well unfortunately for Roux it isn't humans.

Deke may not like the happenings in town, but he also can't risk mission out right, they have a job to do. He was all about doing it right up until Roux basically fell in his lap. Tough as nails little spit fire will test Deke's sanity. Having to take care of herself Roux isn't all fired up to trust anyone, make friends or care. So she keep's telling herself.

I liked it all, the detail which you can tell in the length of the book, it was well thought of. The characters, yep loving Roux and Abby. Then there are a few intense action scenes, some pretty hot sex scenes. You should be able to get a feeling for the characters. Being the first book, its not a cliff hanger so to say, but and intro to the next book. I can't wait! thank you Kalie Argent for the chance to read Shadow Soldier I recommend. Enjoy.

Roux Jennings is fighting for survival, along with the remaining humans left in the world after The Purge. Shifters, werewolves and vampires have come out of hiding and taken command. She and a band of other humans go on a scouting mission. As she gets separated, her scent is quickly picked up by a Coalition soldier, Deke Collins. Captain Collins is in charge of keeping the peace in Trinity Grove, he takes care of humans and paranormals. As soon as he picks up Roux's scent, his inner panther knows he's found his mate. Now he must convince Roux not all paranomal beings are evil, some are even fighting to save the world, not destroy it, as humans have been led to believe.

This book is fast paced, edge of your seat, thrilling. Argent crafts unique characters, each with a past you want to know more about, and a dark and gloomy world. The tension between Roux and Deke can be nail biting at times. Deke is incredibly patient as he works to gain Roux's trust and love. There were definite twists I was not expecting, making the world a bit darker and a little gorey. But I loved it since it was not the typical paranormal world. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

WTF!!! I didn't realize that the second book had not been finished or I would have not put myself through so much emotional distress quite so soon!! Holy hell!! I don't know how I am going to recoup from this book! Total book hangover and I am dying at all that has happened. I don't really want to go into a lot on this book because it surprised me on the direction it went. So I want it to be a surprise for others. The story was amazing, the characters were amazing. Suspense, love, heartache and more!! I had a really hard time putting the book down. Sometimes I had no choice because I just don't think my emotions could be controlled at some of the scenes in the book! I have not read anything by this author and had no clue how her style of writing would be. I am glad I took a chance on this book because it was so worth it!!! I plan on reading more by this author. She has an amazing gift with writing and making the story feel so real that it tears you up inside. I am still having issues getting over it!! I need the second book now! Highly recommend!

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I liked the beginning and it was moving right along but it got a bit extreme on the deaths of people close to the main characters. Almost felt like a Star Trek episode where you better not be wearing a red shirt or your toast. I also did not like the fact that it had a cliffhanger ending either. Did I like it enough to go for the next book? Maybe. Will it too have a cliffhanger ending? Possibly. Will that prevent me from reading it? Yeah it would. Not a fan without a warning that it is a trilogy (one without a ending until the end) or continuation then I go in knowing it won't end with an ending until the last book. So be warned.

Kali Argent is a new author for me to read. I read an excerpt of her, SHADOW SOLDIER, and was hooked on the story from that first chapter. When I finished that first chapter, I went immediately and purchased the books so that I could continue reading the story. The action and suspense was continious with surprising twists and turns. I'm not sure how many books will be in The Revenant Series, but I will be reading them.

Strong beginning. Great concept and the h is awesome. But about 75% into the book I started to lose interest. Maybe a case of "it's not you, it's me".
