Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.

Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.

I only checked out this book for the Mary Burton novella, so I’ll refrain from rating this anthology.

"A Ranger for Christmas" (Mary Burton)- 3 stars. I quite liked this one. Both MCs were likable and well developed for a novella. There also wasn't any OP or OTT crazy drama. You'd be surprised by how many authors feel the need to include either run-ins with exes or mentions of others. There's none of that in this story. Refreshing.

Normally I like Christmas stories and as long as it's Christmasy I'll enjoy it. This book had 4 short stories and I really only enjoyed one of them.

A Ranger for Christmas - I liked this story. It had a decent plot and I liked the characters. Although I didn't necessarily buy that they fell in love that quickly I still enjoyed it.

A Southern Christmas - This one was okay. Danielle and Sawyer were decent characters but I'm not sure why Danielle was so sure she was still in love with her ex since she hadn't even spoken to him in 2 years. Plus trying to break up a wedding isn't exactly in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas in Montana - I hated this one. Laurel was a complete spoiled bitch who threw tantrums when she didn't get her way. She was mean to her ex and even admitted that she was the one who left him and he had never been anything but kind and loving to her. I have no idea why he still wanted her and think he deserved better.

Our First Christmas - This was an okay story but a woman about to divorce her husband and thinking she wants to move on to her sister's ex-husband who is her husband's cousin is so not Christmasy or romantic. Doesn't matter how it worked out because it was just sad through most of the book (not what I want from a Christmas story).

Quick book with four short stories that take place around Christmas. The reoccurring theme of each told the story of the main characters first Christmas as a couple. Honestly, though that and the fact that each story takes place during the Christmas season is the only thing Chistmas"y" about most of these stories. That was a bit surprising to me but it was ok, just not what I had expected. As with all short story collections some stories will appeal to different people more than others. I'm not different in that regard. I really enjoyed a couple, the other two they were just kinda ok.

"A Ranger for Christmas," Mary Burton 4 stars
This was my favorite short story in the book. It was also the least Christmas related story in the entire book. Go figure! In my opinion the story just happened to be taking place at Christmas. But on a positive note, I thought the author did a fantastic job of creating great characters and endearing them to readers. I know that is a difficult task in such a short amount of space. I'd definitely pick up a full length novel someday.

"A Southern Christmas," Mary Carter 2.5 stars
Well, this was my least favorite addition. I didn't care much for the writing and I really didn't care much for the characters. Heck, I didn't even like the plot too much. I think 2.5 stars is being generous.

"Christmas in Montana," Cathy Lamb 3 stars
This story was hard for me to rate since I suspect had this been a full length novel I might have felt differently about it. However, I was plenty annoyed by the cast of quirky characters littered around this book. It was WAY too much for a short story. However, I did like the male lead character and feel he saved the story. I probably would try a full length novel from this author someday. Provided of course that the synopsis and reviews are favorable.

"Our First Christmas," Lisa Jackson 4 stars
Lisa Jackson is the only author of the four that I have read before. While I must say she is far from my favorite author I have always liked everything I have read. Although in the past I have primarily read her thrillers and not romance. But with this story I think she proves herself in my eyes as an accomplished writer in whatever genre she tackles. I felt this story had the most substance of the four. It felt the most like a Christmastime story. That doesn't mean it's necessarily happy, just that it used Christmas as a part of the story rather than a backdrop.

How I figured my rating:
4.0
2.5
3.0
4.0
___
13.5 / 4 = 3.3 but I'll round UP to a 4 because of the two very good stories in the collection

1st story- "A Ranger for Christmas": It was about Marisa (university professor who specializes in ancient languages) and Lucas (Texas ranger). He brings her a code that needs cracked in order to bust up a drug deal. Marisa works on it, but someone isn't happy about it and starts to stalk her and tries to kill her. It is her assistant, Kyle, who is trying to kill her because he is involved in the drug deal. 3 stars at best."

The 2nd book-A Southern Christmas- 4 stars. Its about a southern girl who works for a NYC magazine. Her boss asks her to go home and do a story about a southern XMas. She says she'll do it and document the story of trying to get her 1st love back. He proposed on XMas eve, but didn't want to move and she wasn't ready so she said no. She went back and realized she loved the photographer that came with her, not her Ex.

3rd story "Christmas in Montana"-so dumb. It was about Laurel who lived in LA and managed a rock band then quits her job and goes home to Montana for Xmas. Her dad has 4 wives and a bunch of kids; mom lives with aunt and makes aprons. Laurel's ex, Josh, bought their family home and acreage and shes mad. She agrees to go on 10 dates with him to get it back. They fall back in love. Hated Laurel- dumb story. DO NOT read.

4th story "Our First Christmas" was the best! Megan was about to give her hubby divorce papers but then he was in a bad wreck and was in ICU. Their adult kids came home and she realized she still loved him and they stayed together :) Really cute and entertaining. I wish the other stories would've been as cute!

I won this book, for free, on Goodreads First Reads. There are four short stories in the book.
The first story is "A Ranger for Christmas" by Mary Burton. First of all, who doesn't love a man in jeans, a cowboy hat, and cowboy boots? I felt like this story was a little rushed timeline-wise, but it was still a very good story.
The second story is "A Southern Christmas" by Mary Carter. This story had me laughing out loud and was really enjoyable with a great story line. I think this story may be one of my favorites in this book.
The third story is "Christmas in Montana" by Cathy Lamb. This story proves that a person can go home again and find out that the one you ran away from is still waiting for you to come home (with a few bumps in the road).
Lastly, the fourth story is "Under the Mistletoe" by Lisa Jackson. This story goes from the present when the wife has made the decision to divorce her husband, to the past when she first met her husband. Then, back to the present, where she remembers why she married her husband and why her decision to divorce him in the present was not a good choice.
All-in-all, I really enjoyed all four stories and each one had a feel good vibe and anyone looking for a light read would enjoy it too.

Each year I read at least one Christmas book to help me get in the spirit of the season. I had purchased this book last Christmas as an Amazon Kindle special. Being a book of four novellas intrigued me. I had recognized a couple of the authors' names and knew their previous work so thought I would like the concept.

I was looking forward to reading the book this holiday season but found that it didn't keep my interest. While the book had Christmas in the title, the stories didn't have much to do with Christmas except they were set during the Christmas season. They were more about romance and personal foibles than the holiday season and its impact on human nature. The stories could have been set at any other time of the year and wouldn't have missed anything with their plots.

The stories are simple and easy to read. If you like romance stories that happen to be set at Christmas, then this book is for you.

The perfect stocking stuffer read! It’s like getting four stockings instead of one on Christmas morning. I enjoyed each and every one of these short stories and it has left me firmly in the holiday spirit.

If you aren’t familiar with any of these authors, this is a perfect way to get to know them and their writing style. For long-time fans this is a superb holiday treat. It’s a great combination of romance, mystery, longing, love, and ultimately the feelings brought on by Christmas.

So if you are looking to get a jump start into the holidays or know someone who loves a quick read, this would be a wonderful addition to any nightstand with the holidays approaching.

What a perfect way to start the Christmas season with 4 short stories to dip into and a great way to try out new authors. I’m glad that I got the chance to read these winter warmers! They are full of romance, humour and festive spirit.

I enjoyed the one by Lisa Jackson particularly, a departure from the usual style I’ve read by her. Written by the wife- it recalls falling in love with her husband, whilst she’s waiting by his hospital bedside.

Lovely to curl up with with a hot cocoa, safe in the knowledge that you have 4 stories to lose yourself in and help create the Christmassy feeling all around you.

Many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this book.

I picked this because I recognized Lisa Jackson's name on the cover. (I remember a patient reading one of her books that he told me his granddaughter had recommended to him. I'd forgotten though that she doesn't write wholesome romance.) I didn't realize that it was a compilation of 4 novellas by 4 different authors until I started reading it.

"A Ranger for Christmas" by Mary Burton: I liked the puzzle aspect of the code and the book was a bit more suspenseful than I'd suspected it would be. I wish that the two main characters hadn't had a one-night stand in Mexico. I also wasn't too crazy about them sleeping together when they resumed their relationship. (3-3.5 stars)

"A Southern Christmas" by Mary Carter: After reading the previous novella, it was hard to get into this one. To me, the premise seemed silly. Danielle takes a magazine assignment, planning to persuade her one-time boyfriend to ditch his fiancee and take back up with her instead. The story did eventually grow to interest me. But again, couples are sleeping together before marriage. (2.5-3 stars)

"Christmas in Montana" by Cathy Lamb: Laurel has what most would consider a dream job--managing a successful band--but the constant travel and the lack of a personal life finally wear her down and she decides to quite. She returns home for the holidays to discover that her family has sold their land and home to her former boyfriend without even consulting her because they took her at her word that she wouldn't want to live in Montana again. The Apron Ladies are hilarious. The father's family history is a bit overdone but it is interesting. Laurel and her former boyfriend rekindle their relationship (despite Laurel thinking that isn't what she wants to do) but again, part of that is a sexual relationship. (3 stars)

"Under the Mistletoe" by Lisa Jackson: It's sad that it took a tragedy for Megan to realize how much she loved the man she planned to divorce at the beginning of the novella. However, it is the only novella where unmarried couples aren't sleeping together, though there is some high school age drinking. (3 stars).

This book has four wonderful stories in it.

A Ranger for Christmas is written by Mary Burton. History Professor Dr. Marissa Thompson has just returned from a six-month sabbatical in the jungle in Yucatan in Mexico. She was hunting for evidence of the Mayans who had lived there. And she made a terrific find in the Mayan language. She wanted to stay but her time and money ran out. She receives a message from a Texas Ranger, asking for help in deciphering messages sent by drug lords. Lucas Cooper is the Texas Ranger; she had an encounter with him while in Mexico. He wants her help.

Second story is A Southern Christmas by Mary Carter. Danielle Bright is a reporter in New York. She is being sent south to do a story about Christmas in her hometown of Wilmington. She left an ex-fiance behind and would like to renew the romance. A sexy photographer, Sawyer, may have different ideas on that plan. This was a fun read.

Third story is Christmas in Montana by Cathy Lamb. Laurel Kelly quits her job as manager for a rock band and heads home to Kalulell, Montana. She is looking forward to living in the home that her mother and aunt live in. They specialize in making aprons. She discovers that the home and land has been bought out by her former lover, Josh Reed.

She wants the house back and Josh agrees to sell it to her if she will go out on 10 dates with him. She agrees and the dates ensue.

Laurel is dealing with family issues. Her father has been married four times and she feels tremendous guilt with something that happened years ago.

This has a great ending.

Fourth story is Under the Mistletoe by Lisa Jackson. Megan Johnson is about to divorce her husband, Chris. They have agreed to meet at their home. He doesn't show up; he has been in a terrific accident and may not make it. She digs in at the hospital to wait until his condition improves. While she is waiting at the hospital, she remembers the joy of their first Christmas as well as other great memories. A good story.

4 holiday themed romance type stories, written by 4 different authors. Think my favorite was the last one, but they were all pretty good. This now ends my holiday book reading until same time, later this year ( around Thanksgiving I usually begin). This is a book I normally wouldn’t read, as I’m not “into” romance genre, but during the holiday season, I’m able to tolerate these types more, due to the season. Everything is more joyous, magical & so I give in to the season, and I truly enjoyed each one Thank you Mary Burton, Mary Carter, Cathy Lamb, & Lisa Jackson.....the 4 authors that supplied the stories for this book & let me enjoy a genre I rarely allow myself to bother reading. All the stories were so nice & holiday themed. Nice collection

“The First Christmas of Many for These Couples”

Four memorable stories by four extremely talented Authors—what more could anyone want for Christmas?

Mary Burton’s “A Ranger for Christmas” is set in Austin, Texas where History Professor and workaholic Dr. Marisa Thompson has just returned from a 6 mo. Sabbatical that was spent in the jungle west of the Yucatan. How she wishes she was back in the wilds, investigating a Mayan ruin, especially when she receives a puzzling text message. She
also has always dreaded Christmastime and this year was no different. To complicate matters, an old acquaintance, Texas Ranger Lucas Cooper arrives in Austin, hoping she can help him as he knows she is somewhat of an expert in ancient languages and needs her help in breaking a drug dealer’s code—but at what price? The history between them doesn’t make life any easier for Marisa and neither does cocky, pesky Junior Professor Kyle Stone and her selfish, arrogant with a reputation of being hungry and getting what he wants no matter who it hurts ex-boyfriend Professor Bradley Rogers. Will she be able to crack the code? Will personal feelings override professional demeanor? Did what happened in Merida, stay in Merida? Who is Reed North and what part does he play in all of this? Will Marisa and Lucas both lose each other as they vanish into their respective sunsets? Or will the magic of Christmas be recaptured once more?

Mary Carter’s “A Southern Christmas” takes us to charming Wilmington, North Carolina, “The Softer Side” magazine feature writer Danielle Bright’s old hometown. She is chosen to write an article about a Southern Christmas, but her stay and assignment may take another twist as she attempts to win back the love of her life, talented artist Nathaniel Hathaway, who she walked away from two years ago on Christmas Eve. There are a couple of barriers standing in her way—one is a beautiful British Art Curator named Anya Pennington. Could the other be her co-worker/hunky photographer Sawyer Drake, who tries to create doubts about her devious, love-starved plans? Sawyer seems to have an agenda all his own. Who, if anyone, will be hurt by Danielle’s scheme? Dani herself,Nate, Anya, or, maybe, Wilmington Historian/Nate’s Grandmother Ruth Hathaway? You’ll want to shake up a few misguided souls and, at the same time enjoy the armchair tour of historic Wilmington with its eye-popping decorations and heart-warming traditions. This is the first of Ms. Carter’s work I have read—but it will not be my last!

Cathy Lamb’s unforgettable characters and stories never cease to amaze me, and her “Christmas in Montana” was no exception. Manager of the Hard Rock Band, “Hellfire”, fiery-haired Laurel Kelly has had enough. She’s been traveling around the world like a gypsy for ten long years, “babysitting” the lead singer and his band members and feels it is time for a change. She heads for her sleepy hometown of Kalulell, Montana and the light green farmhouse her Grandparents built so long ago. She hopes to catch up with her Mother and Aunt Emma before Christmas and the onslaught of her crazy, dysfunctional family. Little does she know what changes her beloved apron designers/perpetual motioned Mom and Aunt have waiting to be discovered. A large part of the changes have to do with Laurel’s ex-boyfriend, the ruggedly handsome Josh Reed who, much to Laurel’s dismay, strolls into her life once more, with secrets of his own. Laurel Begs and pleads to make a deal with him to rectify her Mother and Aunt’s mistakes—the problem is, it comes with a price—not so much monetary but the dredging of old memories, some heart-wrenching as well as those thought to be well buried after all of these years. It is an unusual deal to say the least! Do old regrets supersede sad memories? 12 years! Isn’t it time to let go of the guilt? Between helping launch the new line of “Naughty Aprons for Naughty Women”, handling her feelings for Josh, and preparing for a chaotic Christmas Eve, one wonders if she’ll ever have time for her own wishes. Believe me when I say you won’t want to put this story down—you’ll laugh, cry, cheer and ultimately feel the love and want to adopt kooky Chantrea, Velvet, Camellia, Violet and Laurel’s tree-named step-brothers. I bet you’ll want a Christmas frog too—and by all means, “Drive Careful”.

In Lisa Jackson’s “Under the Mistletoe”, Attorney Megan Johnson is dreading the Christmas Season. Not only because of the usual hustle and bustle, and tender memories of Christmases past, but about the looming sad news she must impart to Daughter, Lindy and Son, Brody. She and Husband/Father, Chris, are getting a divorce. Meg learns the hard way that life can change course on a dime when Chris is involved in a multi-vehicle accident. Memories of their first Christmas which started over 20 years ago, flood her muddled mind. It doesn’t help that her Brother-in-law (and Chris’ Cousin), Adam Newell, the one man she has dreamt about and loved from afar for what seems like forever, joins the same law firm as a senior partner, complicating her career as well as her home life. But, is Adam the real reason for the break-up? Amidst the anger and bittersweet memories, realization comes to call. Sometimes in your life, you’re only given one chance to right a wrong, so grab that golden ring tightly and hold on. The simplest thing can re-affirm what the heart is trying to impart. Besides, would letting her “Inner Wild Child” out help anything? This is a wonderful, heart-tugging story you won’t soon forget.

Book was ok for a fluffy romance. I liked the first story. the second story was ok, though I hated the main character (bit of a spoiled little girl). I'll be honest and say I skimmed third story. Not my cup of tea. the writing was repetative and i didn't like main character in this one either (a bit whiny). I basically just read the letter from different family members. the last story I enjoyed and would have liked to hear a little more about. all in all, for a discount book it wasn't bad

Well, this was my Christmas season book I just finished today. I was hoping to finish a couple this year but this one drag out all month. I guess for the most part I enjoyed this. Even though I’d never read this other than the fact I love Christmas and thought Christmas stories would be a good idea. I’d suggest this to love story lovers.

I would call this book a mindless read as it is one you could stop at any time and pick up at anytime.

I’m definitely not a fan of these short stories or quite possibly short stories in general. There just isn’t enough time to develop the characters or a believable love story. Also, some of the main characters were awful and I found myself wishing their suitors would run and never look back.
