"Sierra Donovan captures the magic of Christmas in this charming and romantic tale. I smiled the entire time I was reading it!" --Shirlee McCoy, author of Sweet Surprises
The best Christmas present? The unexpected romance that brings two former classmates together for a lesson in holiday magic. . .
With its festive Snowed Inn and year-round Christmas store, the pretty town of Tall Pine knows how to do the holidays right. But this year, Liv Tomblyn's homecoming trip may be bittersweet. Liv's grandmother died soon after Thanksgiving, leaving a lifetime of belongings to sort through. Soon Liv is surrounded by memories, including a retro silver Christmas tree. And there's Liv's old friend Scott Leroux--the one-time class clown who's become the town's go-to handyman.
Scott enjoyed helping Liv's Nammy with little fix-it jobs in recent years, but now he's wondering if the crafty grandma had a much larger project in mind. Everything--from Nammy's mysteriously malfunctioning heater to that silver tree--seems to be conspiring to throw Liv and Scott together. Not that Scott objects. For though Liv insists she'll leave Tall Pine when the holidays are over, he's hoping their holiday kisses might thaw her resolve and make this Christmas truly unforgettable. . .

LOVED IT!!! This is a great way to start off Christmas reading. I loved Liv's character. She is stubborn and has her pride. Scott is hot and does everything he can help including getting Liv to stay in her hometown and with him. This book is very heartfelt. Loosing your grandma before or after Thanksgiving is never easy. I can relate to that myself.. I couldn't put the book down. I was just so engrossed in the story. I felt like if I put the book down I may miss something important. I highly recommend reading this book. I look forward to reading more books By Sierra Donovan. Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Publishing.
I love Christmas, and even though it's still way, way too early for most things Christmas, I'm always up for holiday-themed books. Clearly, the publishing industry agrees, since many of these are released in early fall. This book, which seems like it would be centered on the holidays, really is more of a "winter" book than a holiday one. It's also not really what I would consider a romance, and because of the disconnect between what I thought it would be and what it is, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.
Liv and Scotty are set up to come together for a heartwarming holiday romance, but for me, it never really worked. First of all, Scotty's involvement in the story seemed really contrived. He doesn't seem to have any particularly close relationship with Liv or her family, with the exception of her late grandmother, and yet he gets called in to help with some frequency. Second, to me, they had no chemistry, and the romance isn't shown to us at all. We're told the characters are attracted to each other, but it doesn't really come across as genuine.
On top of that, that majority of the story is about Liv and her family cleaning out her late grandmother's home. It's sad on the one hand, but also completely flat on the other. It may just be my personal experience, but these people seemed remarkably put together for just having lost someone they loved. Not even waiting a week after the memorial service, at Christmas, to clean out her house? Seems unreasonably quick to me. Plus, death and loss don't inspire me to see or feel romance, so it's a little weird that this is the basis of the story.
This book wasn't terrible, but it wasn't for me. I didn't like that Christmas took a backseat to a more depressing storyline (especially with Christmas being in the title) and I didn't like the paltry amount of romance the book contained. I gave it two stars.
Lovely story that will get readers in the Christmas spirit. Great characters and a smoothly flowing storyline will have readers drawn in from the very first page. A moving story filled with love, laughter, tears, and finding your path through life. Definitely recommend!

I really enjoyed this story but probably wouldn't suggest it to anyone who prefers strictly romance and NEEDS sex to round out a story. This read more like chick-lit, which I'm perfectly fine with. This story warmed my heart because it came across so authentic and when I'm home under a blanket trying to keep warm, authentic and sweet are exactly what I need.
This was a fun and quick Christmas romance. Liv's Grandmother has passed away so she came home to help her mom and sister to say goodbye and clean out the house. She ends up meeting up with Scotty who is the handyman of the town. As he helps them with everything she starts having feelings for him. But her home and business are back in Texas and she needs to get back to a business that she isn't sure will be there anymore. I received this from netGalley for a review.
Liv's returned to her hometown for her grandma's memorial. She reconnects with Scott, a guy from her childhood. Her job is in Dallas and she hasn't been to her hometown for 4 yrs. I liked the 1st book, but this didn't have that magic. It starts slowly and really never picks up. I admit to being a bit bored. I had a hard time understanding why Liv was gone for 4 yrs. She had a good relationship with her family. She didn't have a job that required lots of call or weird hours (she was a personal organizer). I thought it was strange. I just didn't "get" the romance between her and Scott. I did like the mystical aspect (the heater that would randomly quit and start working- even when off and the ornament).
Returning to Tall Pine once again was such fun. I adored last year’s Do You Believe In Santa? and have it on my re-read list for this year’s Christmas season. Oh, and watch for familiar faces to pop up now and then – I love running into old friends. *grin* This year we’ll meet Liv and Scott, former classmates whose lives separated into different directions after school. Liv moved away to start her own business – Scott stayed in Tall Pine becoming the “go to” handyman around town. But now their lives are going to come together once again – and with a little meddling from a loving Nammy’s spirit who knows what magic might happen this Christmas season.
We Need A Little Christmas is full of a loved grandmother’s sweet memory as Liv settles down for the difficult, yet loving task of packing up her beloved grandmother’s belongings. She’d meant to come home sooner, but four years had passed in the blink of an eye and now Nammy was gone. In recent years Scott had done many repairs at Nammy’s and found himself somewhat adopted into the older woman’s affections… and perhaps her matchmaking as well.
I enjoyed Liv and Scott’s slow fall into love. Definitely a clean romance, this couple seemed guided by unseen loving hands with all the small odd things that were happening around them. I like to believe that Nammy was doing her matchmaking still. Scott is a content, happy man doing what he loves. Sure, fixing things isn’t a big money maker type of job but he enjoys tinkering and the satisfaction of a job done well. Liv is driven in her work, and will only be home for a few weeks. Can love keep her here with Scott? Only time, and reading the story will tell.
This is a story that has many emotions wrapped up in it. Sadness, grieving, frustration, happiness, hope and eventually love. I wouldn’t call it depressing but I will say that if you have memories of your own loved ones that have passed on… you might bring back a memory or two, hopefully they’re happy ones.
We Need A Little Christmas is a charming, loving and satisfying Christmas Romance. One that I’d recommend without hesitation. You’ll feel good, enjoy a clean romance and maybe relive a few Christmas memories of your own.
*I received an e-ARC of We Need A Little Christmas from the publisher, Kensington Books – Zebra and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
This was a sweet, clean romance that revolved around the magic of Christmastime.
Liv Tomblyn's grandmother, Nammy, had passed away around Thanksgiving so she had come home to Tall Pine, California. She had been voted "Most Likely To Succeed" when she graduated from high school and was now living Dallas where she was running a successful business with her partner, Terry. She had only come home to help her mom and sister pack up her Nammy's home so it could be sold. She had no intention of staying past her return date of two days after Christmas. She also hadn't planned on meeting an old classmate, Scott Leroux. She remembered him but with no romantic interest. But, as they spent time together, those feelings began to change into something sweet and wonderful if only she could let herself accept it.
Scott was the local handyman. He had done a lot of work on Liv's Nammy's home and had grown very close to the woman. So, naturally, he wanted to help as needed when they were packing up and preparing the house for sale. He was fascinated Liv and began to see her as a possible romantic interest. He had a reputation for being the in-between guy. Someone who helped girls get over a heartbreak and then they moved on to someone else. It isn't what he wanted but that had been his history. The girls he dated all liked him but not enough to stick around with him. Was he to be forever doomed? Would he ever be the guy that the girl wanted to stay with for good?
This was a well-written story and friendship, love and memories with the beautiful background of the magic of Christmas wound through the story. I enjoyed the time I spent reading this story very much. I happened to be reading this story the week of Thanksgiving and finished it Thanksgiving morning so it felt very real because of the time of year around the holidays, too.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The expected publication date is September 27th, 2016.
I know, I know. It is only September and why am I reading a Christmas story already? I will tell you why. It is never too soon to get your Christmas shopping done and I thought this would get me in to the right spirit. Also, who doesn't love a Christmas story?
This was a really cute story. It will appeal to those who like romance but prefer them clean. Nothing more risqué than kissing to be found in this one. It was just long enough without being too long.
I absolutely loved the town this story was centered around. It not only had a Christmas store but it also had a Christmas hotel. Now that is something I would pay money to stay at. Everything about the town felt warm and inviting and to be honest was my favorite part of the story.
It was refreshing to see the romance between Liv and Scotty blossom slowly without the between the sheet action. Many times that is just fill in a story and lacks substance. the absence of that actually had you feel the emotion a little more. Now, with that in mind, this relationship did seem to develop out of thin air if I had to be a little critical. I didn't mind though, it still entertained me.
This is my first Christmas read this year, and my first story by Donovan. I believe there may be more stories that center around this town so I am going to have to check them out. Overall I was pleased with this book.
I love this little Christmas town located in Southern California and the charming people who live here. In this installment, Scott and Liv, two former high school classmates, are reunited when Liv's grandma, Nammy, passes away and she comes home for a month to help her mom and sister. Scott hasn't ever left town and is now the resident handyman.
Christmastime is a very nostalgic time for many people. Although the reader doesn't meet Nammy, she becomes real through the traditions and memories that are brought to life throughout the book. As Scott helps this family go through Nammy's belongings and fix the house up to sell, Liv gets to know him in a new way--as adults. There is an attraction between them, but boy, does Liv fight it! The magic that happens when they kiss and the kind and gentle man that Scott has become should be enough for her to do what she needs to do, but she fights to the bitter end, which is a little frustrating. I would've given up.
I love the way this family becomes closer through a loss. This book can stand alone, but it was so much fun to see the characters from the previous novel make appearances. I love how small towns are bound together and step up to help each other in various ways.
There is a thread of magic that shimmers at random moments. This is a magical season and a magical place, one that I'd love to visit if it were real. There are a few things that I would've liked to see wrapped up--I felt like there are a few loose ends, but overall, it's an enchanting story.
Content: very mild language; mild romance.
*I received a copy through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS is not a Christian Romance, but it does start with a funeral and has a few mentions of a Christian song (Leaning on the Everlasting Arms) and a pastor who makes a mention or two of God.
Liv is a very take charge individual, organized, and in control. She hates falling apart at her grandma's funeral and is crushed she hasn't taken time to visit her family in four years. Her sister is pregnant, but feeling insecure and unneeded since Liv is taking charge and bossing her, and her mom is healing from a fall where she broke her ankle. With the funeral and cleaning out of grandma's house, there's a lot of taking charge to do and organizational skills needed.
Scott is a handyman and seems to be a daily call for Liv's family as the house seems to think it needs to keep Liv and Scott thrown together. A new furnace that won't work...when you want it to, but will come on when it's off, a trap door that closes without warning, and more.
I like Ms. Donovan's books usually, but this one felt a bit slow and draggy. The usual sparks are missing, and characters I liked in her previous book act a bit like jerks in this one.
I did hurt for Liv. Scott seems like a fun type guy but he didn't move beyond that for me.
If you like Christmas books that are not Christian, then WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS might be a good one to consider.
I bought a copy of this book, but not from amazon. I won't show up as a verified buyer there. I was not obligated to write a review, and all opinions are my own.
Wonderful story of a journey through sadness & into a life of love. After being gone four years, Liv has come home for her Nammy's funeral. She plans on staying for a month to be there for her mother & sister & to help them pack up Nammy's things. She feels guilty for not coming home after college or in the years between to see them. Between a breakup and a time consuming business, she can't afford the time but is determined to take it. Scott does a favor for Liv's mother & sister & picks her up at the airport. From this moment, you feel pulled into the story. The author has a way with her narrative that brings you into the characters live & makes you feel the emotions they feel - the pain, depression, love, laughter & sorrow. The characters are very realistic and easy to love. Scott is struggling with finding a relationship, trying to get people from the home town to see him as a grown up business owner not Scotty, the kid. Liv is practical, organized & dependable. That's what makes it so hard on her as she looses control of her emotions & business. There are twists in the story that keep you involved & entertained. Several things happen in Nammy's house that make you wonder about them. This was a great book & I really enjoyed it. It runs you through the entire gamut of emotions. Grab a Kleenex & start reading!
As I have been scrambling to catch up on a backlog of reading after pretty much taking November off for writing, I have been trying to get through all of the holiday ones so that you might find something to read with your eggnog, Christmas tree, and fire blazing in the fireplace. What I’ve learned in the past couple of weeks of reading Christmas-themed novels is that it’s not as easy as it looks.
Later this week, I’ll do a list with all of the holiday books, I’ve read and reviewed so you might find a favorite.
Sierra Donovan’s We Need A Little Christmas jumps to almost the top of the list by taking all of the elements that you would expect in a Christmas story and then presenting the story of a family losing a valued member just weeks before the holiday.
Liv is back in Tall Pine for her grandmother's funeral and it stirs all sorts of memroies. She is also reunited with Scott, whi is remembered as the class clown and that is about it. Scott has been doing small jobs for a long time for Liv's grandma but it seems Nammy was trying to get Liv and Scott together...
This book felt a bit empty. Live doesn't really want a relationship (really hesitant) so for a romance book, nothing can/does really happen... On the other hand, there were some sweet parts (like crying, which means comfort ; ). The romance came almost only at the end...
This was like a Hallmark Christmas story. While it was a nice story, I found myself skim-reading along. This could have been because it is Thanksgiving vacation, we hosted 12 people for Thanksgiving, I had a lot of cleaning to do, and we had company staying at the house. So when I read during little stolen moments, I was just rushed. Or it could have been that this was not so engaging that I could forget all my duties and just read. 🤓
This was a good Christmas read - it was a good read to get the reader in the holiday spirit. It was a fun, fast book that this reader enjoyed. The character's were likable, the story was good and the reader knew that there was going to be a happily ever after, but they were ok with it. This reader enjoyed the premise of the story, it was just what this reader needed to get into the holiday spirit! Add this one to your TBR list, you won't be sorry!
A lovely Christmas small town story you cannot go wrong in reading this. Growing up in a small town some kids want to stay and some want to get out as soon as possible. Liv thought she was one to move on but coming home for family she finds love for Scott the class clown has grown up but is there for some laughs also. A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start.
It had all the feels. Loved the writing. Will definitely keep Sierra Donovan on my TBR. It ended perfectly. I even enjoyed the recipe for the Cocoa at the end of the story.
When I want a romance that’s just a little bit different I know that Sierra Donovan will bring a story that doesn’t solely focus on the connection, but brings a more complete picture of the people involved. In this story, Liv is returning after an absence to attend her grandmother’s funeral and help her mother and sister pack up the house. So, while not a wonderfully cheery start to a homecoming romance, the contrast of grief and loss with hope and the holiday does start to build from the first page.
Scott never left, and while he’s struggled with people’s views of him as a kid, he’s building a solid reputation as a handy man. Over the years, he helped Liv’s Nanny out with little jobs around the house, and he’ll miss the woman. When Liv’s mother asks him to pick her up at the airport, he’s got no problems reconnecting with his old schoolmate and friend.
From here, the story mixes the repeated malfunctions in Nanny’s house that require a ‘fix’ and the gradual realization of Liv and Scott as they reconnect and start to dream. While I enjoyed this story, there’s no great angst or conflict, just a slow series of remembered events and moments that will leave you with a smile. A great read for an afternoon – a frosted gingerbread man of a book, with plenty of holiday cheer and solid substantial characters that make that perfect bite.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. This review was originally posted on I am, Indeed
Welcome home, Liv Tomblyn to Tall Pines, which Liv has avoided returning for years, but not only is Liv returning for the holiday season she is returning for the memorial service for her Nammy, her grandmother who was so proud of her accomplishments. To hear Nammy tell, she was a very successful CEO. Liv is a successful business woman, she may not be the CEO of a huge corporation, but she can organize a closet in the homes of her clients very successfully. With her skills, she hopes to help her mom, Faye and her sister, Rachel settle her Nammy’s estate.
But how did Scott Leroux from high school now a handyman for Tall Pines, become a member of her family. Scott for the last several years was Nammy's adopted nephew/handyman. Scott is now becoming too close to Liv who is returning back to Texas just two days after Christmas, she doesn’t have time for Scott or time to heal a broken heart from a past relationship. Although Nammy is gone, why does it feel like she is still weaving holiday magic?
Sierra Donovan sends us down Evergreen Lane back to Tall Pines in “We Need a Little Christmas.” Book two of the Evergreen Lane series, follow up to last years gift of “Do You Believe in Santa." Donovan weaves a story as warm as cocoa on a snowy day in winter, but brings back memories of our childhood, reminiscing over ornaments of old and the bright cheerful memories of a silver Christmas tree with a color wheel. Every fall, Donovan brings Christmas cheer early into our lives, even in September –she makes us want to countdown like children until the 25th of December. Guess who is counting down until fall of 2017 when the next enchanting, memory filed holiday read arrives and takes us back to Tall Pines.
A HUGE thank you to the author for my first Christmas gift of 2016 an ARC of "We Need A Little Christmas."
(Hopefully third time is the charm, first 2 reviews apparently are floating in cyber space:/)
This is a great, light, not-too-long Christmas romance and is perfect for getting you in the Holiday spirit!! All through the month of December, I read exclusively holiday-themed books of all genres. This is exactly the kind I enjoy. In We Need A Little Christmas, our main character is Liv who is returning to her hometown after a long absence for her Nammy's funeral. She is a driven and focused individual, and is in for a surprise at her arrival. Will she let her defenses down to find a little Christmas cheer, and just maybe a more lasting happiness? Fans of previous Sierra Donovan books will like seeing a familiar face or two around town. The ambiance of Christmas is subtle but definitely evident and enjoyable in the decor and descriptions.
I would recommend reading this with some eggnog when you need a little Holiday pick-me-up in December. Being in the midst of the Holidays yourself will add to the reading fun!
**Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington books for an ARC to read and review. I was delighted to be chosen and jumped at the chance to request it!**
Although there is a bit of a love story, this is really about Liv finding herself again. She moved away to another state and is now back for her grandmother’s funeral. It’s unfortunate that such a horrible event brought her home but she’s felt guilty about being so far away and now is her chance to reevaluate her life. And it doesn’t hurt to have Scott around as she does :)
I love good ol’ boy Scott. He’s hard-working, caring, friendly and giving. He helps so many people around town. And that include Liv. She’s at a cross-roads and he’s there to give her support but also a little push here & there to stay so that they can explore their feelings. She’s a little prickly and confused and can be difficult but she is also dealing with a lot with the funeral & her future. It can put anyone on edge :) While she’s not the softest person she does love her family and she wants what is best for them. And she may struggle a little but she finds it really hard to resist Scott’s charms … because he wouldn’t!
While this is set at Christmas time it isn’t one of those that is steeped in the holidays. This can easily be enjoyed at pretty much any time of year.
(This is the first in this series that I’ve read but I really enjoyed it and not having that history didn’t seem to bother me.)
*** I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. ***
Sweet small town romance, with a kiss or two, that has Liv questioning just what she really needs in life when she is called home to help her mother deal with her grandmother’s death. Liv is picked up from the airport by a classmate when her sister and mother have an issue to deal with and cannot come themselves. She and Scott reminisce, feel a spark but also realize that with limited time together before Liv returns to Texas there is not much sense in starting anything. The story deals with the funeral of Liv’s grandmother, sorting through Nammy’s possessions, an injury, Braxton Hicks contractions, memories and other issues before the book concludes.
The interest between Liv and Scott is there but it is not as electric as it is in many other books. I have to say I was drawn more to Scott than I was to Liv. Why? Well, Scott was happy with who he was, enjoyed his chosen profession and was a good man. Liv, on the other hand, had huge self-expectations, worried about looking stupid more than being happy and was afraid…of more than one thing. I am not sure why they were attracted to one another unless there is some sort of magic in town that assists couples in finding one another.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington books for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Liv is back in her hometown since leaving for college. The only reason she’s back now is because her grandmother passed away and she needs to help her mum and sister to clean out her grandmother’s house. When she arrives she doesn’t see her sister coming to pick her up instead in her sister’s place is Scott Leroux the class clown but now the town handyman.
I got a hold of this book just before Christmas. So I was completely in the Christmas Spirit of things whether it was with my reading or watching. This was a light-hearted read and it was full of Christmas Spirit. I liked both Liz and Scott but I felt that it was a stretch to them. Scott didn’t really have much to do with Liz’s family aside from doing the odd jobs with Liz’s grandmother. The love interest between them wasn’t hot and heavy it was sweet. But I felt for most of the book that their story actually dragged on a little bit longer than I thought should have been. I wasn’t mind blown with the characters or their chemistry but it was a fun easy read for the holiday season.
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I received several Christmas themed books these last few weeks. Many are magical and put that feel good spirit into you. But We Need a Little Christmas by Sierra Donovan brought me so much more. Liv and Scott will forever have a place in my holiday.
When Liv’s Nammy dies and she is brought back to her home town she isn’t in a good place. Fresh out of a break up, and a business that is all consuming her time. But she must hold face and be the one to get everyone else threw this horrible event. But who will be there for her?
Scott has stayed in the small town he grew up in while everyone else left the coop. While being around Nammy a lot over the last four years he kindled a bond. When he see Liv he knows that she is leaving in a few short weeks but something about her has him wanting her.
How does Nammy get these two together when she isn’t around now?
I enjoyed the recipes at the end of the book. I wanted more of the story of Liv and Scott.
A wonderful heartwarming story of going home, remembering good times, and finding new love all wrapped up in the magic of the holiday season. Liv Tomblyn hasn't been back to Tall Pines in four years. She always thought there would be time but now her beloved Nammy is gone and she's returning for her service and to help her mother and sister handle things. A lot about Tall Pines is just as she remembered them but some things have definitely changed. One of those changes is standing in front of her. Scotty Leroux, once the class clown has definitely changed and now appears to be a town favorite. Liv soon realizes she's missed a lot by not coming back but her life is in Dallas now. Right?? Or maybe if she opens her mind and heart to it, she might find all she needs right here at home.
Definitely a must read for the holidays. I highly recommend it.
We Need A Little Christmas by Sierra Donovan has sad elements handled with a light touch. That is what I have come to expected for Sierra Donovan’s Christmas stories. I was not disappointed this time. It may have seemed to some that the death of a grandmother at this time of year would not work but it does happen in life, does it not? I know because I lost a very loved parent right at the beginning of December one year. I guess even now so many years later I found a measure of comfort in Liv’s story.
Besides the loss of a beloved family member, the main characters of Liv and Scott must take a close look at their lives and what is important to them. It just so happens that this is during the Christmas Season. With a hint of “Nammy” holiday magic, this is a wonderful read.
Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.
This is my first book by Sierra Donovan. We need a little Christmas is the second book in Ever Green Lane Series and is the story of Liv and Scott.
Liv is a driven career woman and Scott is the local handy in her hometown where she is heading back to after a long time, for her grandmother's memorial.
The whole scenario was a bit saddening and though Scott and Liv were often in each other's company ... they weren't alone a lot and the few times they were ...you don't really feel the connection between these two lead characters ...
For some reason, I found this story a little sad, slow and wasn't able to connect with the characters ...
