I came across this book in my public library's eBook collection while poking around, and thought it might be a fun light read for the holidays. It turned out to be three short stories and two novel advertisements (first few pages). Of the three stories only the first one was very good, with the typical grief and cookies romance that Amish romance tends to center around. The second story I really disliked... the author seems to confuse simple living with being simple minded and I found the romance that blossomed completely unrealistic and disturbing, actually. The third story had some strange repetition in it as if the author didn't know what to put there. There are buggies and baked goods, gentle men and subservient women. No, that's not really my thing. So your mileage may vary.
So I bought this last year but only read the first story and decided I'd finish it this year. a few things: normally I think on average I don't really care for books that are clearly cheesy or a bit cheesy, like in general. But every once in a while I'm like okay I'm gonna cave, usually it's due to a recommendation or a buddy read but not this one. This was definitely one of those okay I always make fun of these books, I'm gonna finally read one and it's Christmas! so I had to.
Honestly, it was the perfect thing to read in the midst of the stressfulness of finals. I just wanted to read something that was cute and fun and wouldn't make me think so much. When you have like 3 ten page theological papers due in one week and all this reading to cram in, you just want to cozy up with hot chocolate and a decompression for my brain and this was it. It was perfect. I would definitely read another amish christmas theme book again. Especially when it's Christmas. I'll pretty much read or try any christmas read.
So this was adorable and each story had a recipe in the back, love that. In general the first story was good. It wasn't bad. It took a while to get used to the amish words and honestly, I learned a lot about their theology from it, lol oddly enough.
The last story was far less amish words, I think only one or two. But it was the one that feel flat. It wasn't very good. Not horrible but not very good. Kind of felt like a good idea and start but really needed to either be longer or more detailed.
The second story, I loved. By far my favorite, the writing was better. The story flowed well. It was just a better narrative overall.
I'm glad I read it and picked this up no matter how cheesy it is.
The first story is by Kelly Long, Daniel Kauffman tries to fulfill a dying wish to his friend, but isn’t successful, and two years later, he is really interested in Clara. Clara appears to still grieving for her late husband, and has really become a recluse, has Daniel learned his lesson, and now will take his time with her. There are a few cute chuckles here, and there are goats involved, and lots of cookies. A really sweet, in more ways than one, cookies and candy, children and a bit of romance, Christmas story, and a very fast and timely read.
The second story is by Jennifer Beckstrand who has brought back my favorite couple Annie and Felty, and their desire to marry off their grandchildren. This one is Titus’s chance, and Annie has opened her home Katie Rose as at 24 she is here to have Amos fall in love with her. Meek and kind Titus writes poetry and is quietly there helping Katie, while Amos, at least what I read, was a demanding guy, and you feel like he is doing a favor just coming around. We hope that Katie sees what is right under her nose, and I’m not rooting for Amos. The final story is by Lisa Jones Baker and her love for a little guy, he needs life saving surgery, and his brother’s pride of not being able to afford the surgery without help. There is also a spark of romance, but all is helped by delicious cookies, and so many tries to get the perfect recipe. All of the stories do include a recipe for you to try, yum! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
BAKING LOVE ON ICE MOUNTAIN by Kelly Long Newly married, Clara Mast and Daniel Kauffman have little to give but love during their first Christmas season together. But generous hearts are always willing to be creative in this “Gift of the Magi” inspired story. This story is a lot more graphic and based more on pure sexual desire than most Amish novels. It is definitely beyond edgy in an uncomfortable for most Christian romance readers way. There is no real faith message, the story is based on promises Dan made to a dying friend and the blurb above is NOT at all accurate. They are NOT married in the book, and are having a cookie bake-off as Dan unlike most Amish men is extremely talented in the kitchen. Add Clara's pet goat and there are some humorous moments. I used to love Ms. Long's stories before she left the CBA but while still well written, this is not for women who want to avoid "fictional porn."
THE CHRISTMAS BAKERY ON HUCKLEBERRY HILL by Jennifer Beckstrand When shy Katie Rose Gingerich’s dat sends her to Huckleberry Hill to secure a marriage proposal, she never expects to long for carefree Titus Helmuth—or to hope that he might want to spend every Christmas with her . . . I LOVE Ms. Beckstrand's Amish books. She mixes humor with romance like none other. I absolutely love Titus's grandparents and was glad to revisit them. Add a new tradition of Christmas goats, a blundering smitten hero and an insecure and shy heroine, it is beautiful. I also liked the way the grandparents manipulated the situation to get Titus there and then sat back and let the real "beau" blunder his way out of the picture while Titus becomes increasingly endearing and sweet. Totally loved this book. 5 stars.
THE SPECIAL CHRISTMAS COOKIE by Lisa Jones Baker A charity auction, an unexpected friendship, and a stubborn spirit combine in an unusual courtship. But for Emma and Jonathan, overcoming obstacles is just one of the lessons to be learned about special blessings this holiday season. This is the first book I've read by this author. It's set in Arthur Illinois, and area I've been in multiple times. I toured my first Amish home in this town and was a lot surprised by all the clutter in it. (It makes my house look sparse in comparison!)
I skimmed this story a lot. It was very clean, and well written, it just didn't draw me in and make me care. Emma is pushy in a non-intrusive sort of way, another words, you don't think such a mild woman would be so insistent. I didn't like Jonathon at first either and while the two talked I didn't see any attraction between them. A complete 180 from the first book in this collection!
The Amish Christmas Kitchen is a collection of three Amish novellas from Kensington Publishers.
Baking Love on Ice Mountain by Kelly Long is, for starters, not at all a match to its description in the official blurb on Amazon or Goodreads. I’m not sure if I have a really early copy and the entire story changed prior to publication or if the blurb is wrong. Either way, what I read is not a Gift of the Magi type story – it’s a story about a young widow and her husband’s best friend … and cookies. While I did enjoy the story, I must admit to raising my eyebrows more than once at the sensuality of the story. Nothing inappropriate, per se, but definitely suggestive.
The Special Christmas Cookie by Lisa Jones Baker is a sweet story about a little boy in need of a lifesaving operation. The friendship/budding relationship between his tutor Emma and his brother Jonathan isn’t a lot of sparks and sizzle, but when you combine it with Amos’ general adorableness and the community coming together in his honor it’s an all around cozy story!
The Christmas Bakery of Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand is my favorite of this collection! I adore this author’s books because I will most certainly snort-laugh at some point (usually several times) and will definitely melt at the sweet romance more than once too. True to form, both occurred whilst I was reading The Christmas Bakery of Huckleberry Hill.
Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a story that will make you laugh … and melt … and want to hug Viking beanied Amish men, then you have come to the right place! Jennifer Beckstrand’s novella in The Amish Christmas Kitchen is romantic and tender and perfectly hilarious. The accompanying novellas in this collection – one a little spicy, one simply sweet – are good as well but Beckstrand’s is my favorite. With all the right ingredients, it’s the recipe for a great read!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)
There is nothing like a little Christmas reading to get you in the festive mood. Now is the perfect time of year to start building up to that most special time of year. The evenings are getting dark, the fires are being lit in the hearth, and the nip of cold air is beginning to pinch at our nose.
The Amish Christmas Kitchen contains three romantic Christmas stories by authors Kelly Long, Jennifer Beckstrand, and Lisa Jones Baker. All with an Amish theme, and each story contains a recipe from the author. The stories are quaint, charming and very very innocent. Guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit, and for anyone interested in the Amish way of life, these stories will give you added incite. Each story was romantic, amusing and totally delightful. I really enjoyed them.
The Amish Christmas Kitchen is a new book with 3 Christmas romance stories. Baking Love on Ice Mountain was my favorite. I would give that one 4 1/2 stars. The Characters Daniel and Clara had so much love in their hearts that they tried to keep hidden. A enjoyed the Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill because it had a Mail-order bride feel to it. I would give this story 3 1/2 stars The Special Christmas cooking was a good read but didn't hold my interest like the first two. Over all, I feel this book was a good read with nice Christmas Stories.
Baking Love on Ice Mountain: 4 stars This was a sweet story, and it was humorous at times, too. I liked the goats and the romance. Daniel was likable from the start, but it took a little while for me to warm up to Clara.
The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill: 4 stars This, too, was a sweet story. I like the goats in this story, too. This wasn't as funny, but there was a lot of food and cooking and baking in this story. I also liked the romance in this story, and the main characters, Katie Rose and Titus, were likeable.
The Special Christmas Cookie: 3 stars I didn't like this one as much. The characters were okay. So was the story. This one didn't have much of an ending either. It would have nice to know how things worked out.
The Amish Christmas Kitchen by Kelly Long, Jennifer Beckstrand, and Lisa Jones Baker contains three entertaining stories. Baking Love on Ice Mountain is by Kelly Long and is a part of her The Amish of Ice Mountain series. It is early October on Ice Mountain (in Pennsylvania) when Daniel Kauffman and Seth Loftus are out cutting trees. Daniel can tell they just had a bad cut and hollers out for Seth to run. Daniel takes off, but Seth seems paralyzed. The tree falls and Daniel runs to his friend. Seth’s dying words are for Daniel to take care of his wife Clara. He asks Daniel to marry her. Unfortunately, Daniel does not approach Clara in the right way and she refuses him. Two years pass and Clara is still mourning the loss of her husband. Her only companion is her goat, Blinks. Her sister, Sarah gets her to bake some cookies for the Bishop (he loves her cookies). Clara and Daniel meet up again and Daniel comes up with an idea. Will Daniel be able to win over Clara? Is Clara ready to fall in love again?
The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand is part of her The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. Anna and Felty are up to their old tricks. Anna wants to help her grandson, Titus find his soul mate. Katie Rose Gingerich is being sent by her mother to Bonduel. Her family wants her to get engaged to Adam Wengerd. They believe it is a good match and that Katie Rose’s cooking will win over Adam (she is a very good cook and baker). Anna believes that Katie Rose is a better match for Titus. She crochets (she has put aside her knitting needles for a spell) a Viking beanie for Titus (it is hysterical). Katie Rose is warmly welcomes, and Titus likes her right away. He will do anything to see her smile. When they discover what a good baker Katie Rose is, they help her set up a business. Adam (the pompous blowhard) enjoys Katie Rose’s good meals and finds ways to take advantage of Titus (by taking credit for Titus’ good deeds). Will Anna and Felty be able to make another match? You will have to read the story to find out (you will love it).
The Special Christmas Cookie by Lisa Jones Baker is set in Arthur, Illinois. Emma is a tutor to Amos who has a heart condition. Amos is unable to go to school or play with other children. There is a special procedure available for Amos but it is very expensive. Jonathan Troyer (his older brother) is unable to afford it on his own and the Amish general fund cannot take such a big hit. Emma sets out to raise the funds for Amos’ procedure. Jonathan is against taking charity. It makes him feel that he cannot take care of his family (mother and brother). Emma is going to have her work cut out for her in changing his mind (she has no intention of stopping the fundraiser). What happens when Emma and Jonathan start spending more time together?
I found The Amish Christmas Kitchen to be delightful. Such enjoyable and engaging stories. My favorite is by Jennifer Beckstrand. I was definitely entertained (it made me laugh and smile). I loved the description of Titus’ beanie. Anna and Felty are my favorite characters. They are so genuine and lovable! The three stories are easy to read and have a good pace. They all can be read without having enjoyed the books in the various authors series. I found the stories to be very uplifting. The remind you of what Christmas is really about (true meaning of Christmas). I look forward to reading more stories by these authors! I give The Amish Christmas Kitchen 4 out of 5 stars (I liked them).
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
MY REVIEW of Baking Love on Ice Mountain: WORD OF CAUTION: the book description/teaser for this novella is NOT correct. This is not based on the "Gift of the Magi". I looked in various different published descriptions to see if this was a one-time error in printing, but this is the one released by publishers for the novella collection. I didn't realize how much I had missed visiting with the Amish community on Ice Mountain until I read this novella. Ice Mountain is not an easy place to live. It is not close to other communities, it requires a great amount of effort to get on or off the mountain and even to visit others on the mountain, and it has meant great hardship for many who live there. When Daniel felled the tree that claimed the life of his friend, Seth, he promised to marry Clara and care for Seth's widow. Clara refused his hasty proposal though, but now there's a baking challenge going on and Daniel is out to win the heart of Clara as well as her hand in marriage with a special cookie recipe. Clara is just as determined to win the baking challenge, but does she want the praise or does she just want to win the heart of Daniel? I rated this individual novella 5 stars. It put me in the Christmas baking mood too! MY REVIEW: I couldn't help but feel sorry for poor Katie Rose. Her parents forced her to leave home and stay for a month with Anna and Felty Helmuth during the Christmas season and spend the time cooking incredible meals for Adam in order to secure his proposal in marriage by Christmas day! Katie is quiet and shy and Adam is loud, arrogant and dishonest. The two don't seem to be a suited pair for marriage. Anna and Titus both agree and furthermore, Titus has decided that he might want to court Katie as well. Titus helps Katie with her Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill by taking orders and delivering baked goods for her. Katie finds it easy to talk with Titus but Adam is her almost husband-to-be. I love Anna and Felty and their amusing antics! It was such fun to be in their home again for Christmas. Anna is the family matchmaker and Felty will do anything his lovely bride asks of him. This time, Anna feels that Titus needs a match made in heaven and she knows just the girl! She puts Titus and Katie together caring for her Christmas goat. Titus and Katie discover they are interested in more than the goat as they spend time together. This is a cute romance with lots of humor thrown in the batter! I rate this individual novella 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers. MY REVIEW: This novella has a nice idea behind it. The Amish community holds a charity auction to raise money for little Amos's heart surgery. His older brother who cares for him since their father's death and their mother's recent flare of Epstein-Barr Virus does not want to accept help from anyone and tells Emma to cancel the auction. But I kept thinking that my kindle was messing up as I read because the same lines and thoughts kept repeating. Unfortunately it was not a kindle error. The author does seem to continue to have the same or similar conversation between characters through the novella. I realize that this is the first published attempt by this author, and hopefully the constructive criticism can help the author to improve the work. I rate this individual novella 3 stars.
OVERALL Rating of novella collection: 4 stars (two 5-star reviews and one 3-star review on the individual novellas)
These novella collections are always great fun to read. Here, three talented writers team up for "The Amish Christmas Kitchen", to present three stories that show the beautiful hope of the holiday season. In the first story, Daniel finds an unorthdox way, at least for an Amish man, to convince Clara, that they are meant to be together. In the second story, we return to Bonduel, where Anna and Felty, the delightful elderly matchmakers of their large clan, team up to bring Katie and Titus, two very shy but caring young adults together through a sweet, humorous series of outings and meals. As well as some misunderstandings. The third story shows how a town comes together, as well as a state and the entire country to raise funds for a young Amish boy to have lifesaving surgery- as the Amish do not carry health insurance. The efforts of a young teenage girl to coordinate the fundraising are admirable and inspiring, and also lead to special relationships she never expected. I highly recommend this book!
If you see the name Jennifer Beckstrand and the words "Huckleberry Hill," you can be sure of one thing -- a fun story with some hilarious matchmaking! The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill is the latest installment in this delightful Amish series and appears as one of the three novellas in The Amish Christmas Kitchen.
As usual, you just never know what Anna Helmuth and her loyal husband Felty might cook up to help one of their grandchildren find his perfect match. Vikings, minions, good food, and Christmas goats -- all are ingredients in a delicious recipe for Christmas fun! A Christmas story often has its Scrooge or Grinch character, and Jennifer provided one of those as well.
So if you are interested in a quick, delightful read for Christmas, be sure to check out Jennifer's story. Thanks to Celebrate Lit for providing electronic copy of this Christmas collection. The review is based on my own thoughts from the story.
(My review was based on one of the three stories in the collection. However, the others were enjoyable reads as well.)
This is a 3 in 1 book each story by a different author
The 1st one is set on Ice Mountain I have read& following the series of Ice Mountain well this is not like the series it was one that was nothing like the series, I found it a weak storyline
The 2nd storyline I felt it was written for a younger age than for adult while it was a nice story just felt it was just for a younger age
The 3rd storyline it felt as the ending came up short I hadn't read anything by this author I can't say by reading this one makes me rush off & look for more
I can't say that this book was a good one I don't like giving a bad review but I do feel I have to give an honest one I usually like books by the first 2 authors so was disappointed with these only good part of these stories is there is some nice recipes
This is the best book yet by Jennifer! What a wonderful delight that it is to read this Christmas book. Lot of laughter and cheering your favorite characters along in this book. This story deals with forgiveness and letting go of the past. Taking the next step in life. This story was so well written that I didn’t want to put it down. I am looking forward to any future books that have Anna and Felty in them. Keep up the wonderful writing Jennifer! 5 stars!
This collection of three Christmas novellas set in the Amish community will get you in the mood for the upcoming holiday season. Recipes are included to complete the festive mood! Family, romance, cookies, fun, laughter and some quirky goats will complete the journey by 3 talented authors. A great stocking stuffer!
An Amish Christmas Kitchen is an anthology. The rating reflects the following:
"Baking Love on Ice Mounting" by Kelly Long, an author I have enjoyed for quite some time. Ice Mountain (like Huckleberry Hill by Beckstrand) is a known area for a Kelly Long reader. But something just wasn't right [for me] in this story. Frankly, I have no patience with someone who is told to NOT do something and given a good reason why -- and then immediately does it expecting different results. In the end, it comes out alright but I wish Daniel's character could have been written differently so he wasn't so, well--frankly, stupid. ~ Rating 3 stars
"The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill" by Jennifer Beckstrand -- I totally enjoy all the Huckleberry Hill books (and stories). I just have to see the words "Felty" and "Anna" on the page and I start to smile. The woman is a horrible cook and Felty has no taste buds and tells her she is the best book e-v---er! She is always match making and is surprisingly good at it. Same thing here but it's still fresh and just makes me smile. ~ Rating 5 stars
"The Special Christmas Cookie" by Lisa Jones Baker who is a new author for me. A delightful story about a little boy needing surgery to save his life and a woman who in teaching him one-on-one due to his health issues falls in love with this little boy. (Who couldn't! He is adorable & LOVES his cookies.) And a big brother who is stubborn and has the responsibility of his whole family but loves his little brother. It's a sweet story you'll enjoy. ~ Rating 4 stars
1. Baking Love On Ice Mountain - the description about this story is incorrect in that Clara and Daniel aren't even married when the story ends but they are on their way to being so. Here Clara is a widow who doesn't want to remarry though her deceased husband's best friend, Daniel is trying to get her to do just that. Daniel had promised his dying friend that he would marry Clara so that she would be taken care and she is making it nearly impossible.
2. The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill - Shy Katie Rose Gingerich is sent to Huckleberry Hill to secure a marriage proposal from someone she hardly knows. When she meets Titus Helmuth she finds she much prefers him to the man she came to meet who is bossy and self-centered. How Titus wins her heart is the fun part of this story.
3. The Special Christmas Cookie - This is my favorite of the 3 stories. Six year old Amos is in much need of heart surgery but his family has no money. Emma, his tutor arranges for an auction/bake sale to help raise the money but Jonathan, Amos' older brother is greatly bothered that he can't provide for his family and pay for Amos' surgery. Their recently deceased father had taught Jonathan that a man must always provide and not ask for help from anyone. Emma tries her best to convince Jonathan that sometimes help from others is okay and God will not judge him badly if he accepts it. Nor, will his father.
The first story in this book, Baking Love on Ice Mountain,by Kelly Long, was very disappointing. I have never read A Christian book that went so far to the edge of propriety. I have read other books by Kelly Long that were beautifully written. But they were published by Christian publishers. Kensington and Zebra are not Christian publishers, so I guess their standards are different. I usually pass all of my Christian inspirational romances on to my daughter. If I decide to pass this along, I will have to write a warning on this book. And the preview for Long’s next book actually has nudity in it. So reader beware and don’t give this book to a teenager. I know there will be people reading this review that disagree. So be it. If I had to write a review for this book, just by itself, I would give it a one star. The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand was hilarious. I really enjoyed it. The third book, The Special Christmas Cookie, by Lisa Jones Baker, was a beautiful story. I wanted to hug little Amos. The second and third books are the only reason I gave this book 4 stars.
First off I purchased this book so this is an honest review/opinion of the stories.
I enjoyed the stories and they can stand alone.
In Kelly Long's story the back blurb on the book is misleading. The story isn't about that. It's about Clara and Daniel and some goats:). Yes goats. It's a sweet and quick read with lots of laughs. I enjoyed the characters and hope to read more of her books!
In Jennifer Beckstrand's story you meet some very lively characters and goats. I'm starting to sense a theme in the force. Also a very good read and you find yourself really rooting for the underdogs in the book. This story really stood out in the collection and it's also an author I plan on reading more of.
In the final story by Lisa Jones Baker (I think this is her first story) it finishes off on a very sweet note. It tugs at your heartstrings and you will fall in love with little Amos.
I really enjoyed the first story: Baking Love on Ice Mountain. That was fun. 4 or 5 starts for it. The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill was sweet and I liked that too. 3 stars. My problem with it was at times, Titus seemed mentally handicapped. I think the author was trying to show him as just sweet and simple. Just loving and non-complicated. Unfortunately, it was a bit over the top at times and I worried about his ability to make a living, live happily with a woman, etc. I'd have to push those feelings and worries aside and try harder to enjoy the book. The 3rd story, The Special Christmas Cookie, was my least favorite. There seemed to be a lot of details missing so the story seemed rushed without good details of how Jonathan changed his mind. Only 2 or 3 stars for this.
This is a collection of three novellas all focusing on the Amish community and the Christmas season. Frankly, Christmas is pretty much in the background, as they are mostly about a young woman and a young man and how the two of them get together. He’s shy (or she’s shy); she is a marvelous baker of cookies; he is hardworking and always willing to help out; some wise adult will conspire to ensure they end up together. There will be buggy rides, snow, family dinners, and farm chores.
The stories are tender and clean romances, rather straightforward and predictable. The writing is very simple and repetitious. Not my cup of tea.
The three stories: Baking Love on Ice Mountain by Kelly Long The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand The Special Christmas Cookie by Lisa Jones Baker
This collection of heartwarming stories has something for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed each of these stories and it's impossible to pick a favorite. To me, some had a more serious overtone than others but they will all warm your heart and maybe even make you smile. It was my first time reading some of these authors but they did not disappoint. I found myself laughing at the antics of goats and cheering for a little boy who needs a Christmas miracle. I truly hope you will give The Amish Christmas Kitchen a try and experience the fun for yourself!
* I was provided a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I rarely DNF a book but I couldn’t get into this one. The first novella was a little odd but realistic enough to push through. Unfortunately I couldn’t get past the second chapter in the next one, and didn’t even start the third. It felt like the author was making the characters simple minded instead of living a simple life, and the storyline was unrealistic and hard to read.
This is a great collection of short stories. I especially love Jennifer Beckstrand's story, The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill. It's the story of how Titus Helmuth and Katie Rose Gingerich were "matched" by Anna and Felty Helmuth. I love the Huckleberry Hill series.
The first story and the last one were good. But the one in the middle wasn’t that great.. The middle stories characters were awful. I don’t wanna give away a lot.
