Desperate for someone to help her protect her land, a female con artist saves an ex-lawman from the hangman's noose by claiming him as her husband. And when her 'no-good spouse' turns out to be a hero, she longs to turn their charade into a real marriage.
CATHY MAXWELL spends hours in front of her computer pondering the question, "Why do people fall in love?" It remains for her the mystery of life and the secret to happiness.
She lives in the Austin, TX area where she is having the time of her life.

With a rope around his neck, Trace Cordell is seconds away from being hanged for a murder he doesn't remember after a drunken night at the local watering hole. Suddenly a woman from Trace's past speaks up. Flanna Kennedy tells the towns people that she saw the whole thing. Trace wasn't the person who killed the man. She also tells them that she is there to claim her husband and take him home. Trace knows very well that he never married Flanna. She just wants his help on securing her land. But Trace sees this as a chance to let Flanna fall in love with him while he helps her with her land.
I usually like Cathy Maxwell's writing, but I thought this short story was weak. My rating: 2.5 Stars.
Buyer beware. This is a republish. It seemed familiar. So I checked my goodreads account and sure enough I read it in 2013 when it was published as part of an anthology. It was a turkey then and still is. I like Cathy Maxwell but she should stick to regencies. I really liked Married in Haste and The Marriage Contract. I wrote a more detailed review on Amazon. I also got my money back.
A quick, slightly predictable read this was just something to almost flick through on a cold winter's Sunday afternoon. I liked Flanna, though I totally understood his anger at her choices. The causal violence and death of the western frontier is well brought out.
