Socialism v. Santa

Rate this book
The memoir grows out of main characters' vivid portraits, their relationships as well as sketches of secondary characters–all set against the backdrop of postwar socialist Yugoslavia.. The author finds herself an archeologist and a detective uncovering the meaning behind the sparse family heirloom–photos, dates and words remembered.

People, stories, the times emerge from a child’s sensitivity center. It is a personal story in a universal human context. The actual landscape completes the panorama–Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, the Adriatic Sea and the Croatian culture in food, customs, theater–the lore of the region.

The narrative although not in a chronological order progresses from childhood to adulthood; studies of languages in Zagreb and Munich, Germany. German culture, travels across Europe further shape the author's character. Moving to San Francisco, USA in 1970, she joins the last wave of the hippie-culture and next works in the Silicon Valley industry. It requires developing new skills in commercial and fine arts. Brought up on her family's moral, non-materialistic values, she expands her skills and knowledge exploring her creativity successively in several media. Next she incites creativity in others in classes and local shows. All along her journey, she writes in spurts her experiences and beginning in 2009, she ventures into artisanal publishing: two children’s books and the memoir–her most comprehensive work to-date.
While humor tints the chronicling of the early postwar period, the book's prevalent tone, design, its photos and drawings lend it an intimate, diary-like quality.
