Jeff Olah is the author and creator of the best-selling series The Dead Years, The Last Outbreak, and The Next World. He writes for all those readers who love good post-apocalyptic, supernatural horror, and dystopian/science fiction.
His thirst for detailed story lines and shocking plot twists has been fueled over the years by stories from Cormac McCarthy, Ray Bradbury, and Stephen King. He also has a difficult time tearing himself away from character driven dramas like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and LOST.
Jeff is addicted to reading, writing, and lifting weights. He lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and ten-year-old Chihuahua.
I never thought I’d say a book had too much zombie killing but this one, wow. I often wonder how all these zombies happened to be outdoors. A bus accident, ok, but most people would be inside hospitals or inside their homes. Anyway, this was a fun read but reading through the fight with 12 zombies one at a time over and over did get a little tedious. I prefer the stories where people go about their days and occasionally happen upon a zombie. The building tension is more interesting than the non-stop onslaught.
This is a fun series to read well worth the time and money. I pretty much flew through the series.
I really enjoy this author's characters and his writing. This book is a real page turner keeping you on edge of your seat! The nightmare begins with Emma, a brillant chemist and lead research analyst working on a highly classified project for the BFX company, is waiting to board a return flight to her home on the west coast when the BFX executive she is traveling with tells her that something with the project Emma has been working on has went horribly wrong and she is to return home on a separate jet and then be escorted safely to her home. Once she reaches home she is to update her research files and wait to be picked up the next day to be taken to a place of safety.
At the same time Emma is flying home her Brother, Ethan, wakes up after rough night out back home somewhere in the Midwest. He sees that he has missed numerous texts and calls from Emma but has forgotten to charge his phone. Ethan ignores them thinking that Emma is just calling because he's late for work again at the job Emily has arranged for the BFX project she is working on.
Ethan will soon discover he should have checked his phone before starting work as he and his partner encounter the threat and try to rescue friends and family members to survive the endless plague of infected now infesting their city and world. He also faces the challenge of finding out what has happened to his Sister hundreds of miles from him on the west coast.
This story kept me on edge of my seat. In the beginning it is a little confusing as it jumps around people and places to introduce the story and the characters. However you soon get to know these interesting and likeable people. Their story is full of thrilling action and suspense. It takes off and never pauses. I couldn't put it down!
Mr. Olah has continued to fascinate me with his view of an apocalyptic world. I am enjoying this series a bit more than Extinction because I thought Mason was a jerk. But that's just me. Ethan is similar to Mason in many ways, but the other characters are easier on the eye and this storyline is more believable to me. Can't wait to who Shannon winds up with.
I can't complain about it being too slow because after the first couple of pages of set-up, the action was pretty much non-stop. It got to be a bit overwhelming at points, which was why the shifting POVs worked for me.
Unfortunately, all of the male characters, except David, got a chance to be a jackass. It was really bizarre how the guys would be going along acting like mature adults then WHOOPS there goes a dick moment. Griffin's behavior toward Cora, after she saved his life for the umpteenth time was especially annoying.
Then there were the moral dilemma moments where they're talking about saving other people even while watching them being attacked. Thanks for the help, guys.
Oh, and then there were the scenes of flat out stupidity. Yeah, you should definitely hesitate to shoot the guy who is turning into a flesh eating zombie right in front of your eyes. Great time to have another mental crisis.
The final straw? The abrupt cliffhanger ending. Screw that. I won't be getting the next book.
This story has lots of great action, well defined characters, and plenty of terror. I like the people forming the group of survivors and I'm anxious to continue the story in the next book.
Hello, you know the old saying "SSDD". This about covers this story. A new and better zombie story has to be out there. Certainly Mr. Tufo and the fortress Britain fellow are not the only ones that can write a fascinating zombie book. Oh yeah, I read a good one that took place during WWII. Those damn Nazis were always up to something sinister. This old crap just ain't cutting it anymore. Thanks.
I just wish Jeff would write a little (a lot?) faster. I thoroughly enjoyed the Dead Years series and I see the same thing about to happen again. I'm out of breath and read the book from start to finish in one (very, very long) sitting. Thanks for the great ride!!!
Pretty good, like TWD the characters are complete idiots. Yes just shoot him he's not your friend anymore. The only smart one is Ben, run like the wind. You have pistols the shtf why not stop by a sporting goods store and load up. Sorry, good start to the series.
I liked it, I've read a lot of zombie apocalypse books, it's one of my favorite genres, and they fall into certain categories, some are just meh, they try to hard and still come out as not that great, other's don't really have to try, the story just flows, this falls into the second, I'll keep reading this series.
The story had me on the edge of my seat. I had a hard time trying to put the book down. Can't wait to read the next book. the characters are all very believable. Hope they all make it. can't wait. excellent reading.
This isn't a bad read. I got thru it pretty quickly and I liked how even from different parts of the country all the characters were related. I will be getting the rest of the books that are in the series. I want to know what happens next.
First time reading from this author but I was pleasantly surprised! I love how the story starts from different scenarios and they all come together towards the end! Awesome book!! Highly recommend this series!
While the story is good, there are too many POV characters and too much jumping around. There is a bit of time jumping that does fit in with the plot. Fun, but I won't keep going in the series.
It's just like the dead years but in the east coast so it's very good. There are a couple players from the the dead years in this book so hopefully we see more of that!
I haven't read Mr Olah before. But I did enjoy the read. Some of the characters are somewhat of a curiosity. Maybe a bit shady. We will see. On to the next one.
