Written by a practicing social worker, PSYCHOPATHOLOGY views mental disorders through the strengths perspective and applies a competency-based assessment model for understanding the subject matter. Featuring detailed, realistic vignettes of clinical practice situations, the text offers strategies for building on clients' strengths and resilience, and insights about social workers' role in working with the mentally ill. Part of the Brooks/Cole Empowerment Series, the up-to-date fourth edition summarizes the current state of knowledge about mental disorders, including a thorough integration of the DSM-V. It also integrates the core competencies and recommended practice behaviors outlined in the 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) set by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).Important Media content referenced within the product description or the product text may not be available in the ebook version.
I thought that this textbook was excellent, frankly. I am a graduate student in Social Work with a focus on systems level practice; however, I still plan to be certified at the clinical level. As a macro/policy scholar, I worried that I would have difficulty relating to the content in individual Psychopathology courses, but this book made the content seem interesting and relevant. It also helped me through a number of diagnostic quizzes which, while I did not perform as well as I would have liked, I still averaged a 94% on. Thanks Susan Gray!
I really appreciate a textbook that exists that is written by a social worker for social workers. It’s quite readable for a textbook; however, it does contain some disappointingly outdated information that I had to correct in class for my students, the most problematic of which is the recommendation that you contract for safety with suicidal clients, which is not in line with current best practice treatment recommendations and has not been for quite some time. Hopefully this will be updated when the new edition is published.
