Rate this book

Winnie the witch decides to throw a huge birthday celebration for herself - on Friday the 13th, of course! - in this eighth picture-book devoted to her doings. Inviting all of her witchy relatives and friends, from Aunty Alice to Cousin Cuthbert, not to mention her sisters Wanda, Wilma and Wendy, Winnie keeps busy making herself a party frock, and preparing food for the big day. A wave of the wand takes care of her garden, now equipped with a pavilion, a hedge-maze, and a bouncy-castle, and Winnie is prepared to greet her guests. A day of fun and games commences, but when Winnie blows her new magic bugle, she finds that everyone has disappeared! Can she bring them back...?

As with other entries in Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul's series about this winsome witch, Happy Birthday, Winnie! was a winner, boasting an engagingly magical tale, and colorful artwork whose appeal lies as much in the many zany details as in the overall energy and sense of fun. I appreciated the fact that we get to meet Winnie's family in this installment, as many of the previous adventures show Winnie on her own - or rather, with her faithful cat, Wilbur - rather than as part of a larger magical community. As a girl, I would have adored these books, and would have spent hours poring over the illustrations. Winnie's 'house' is revealed as an immense mansion here, and I would have had fun imagining all the magical things that it must contain. Like previous Winnie the Witch books, the end-paper illustrations were supplied by child fans - two seven-year-olds from an infant school in Derbyshire - and that only adds to my appreciation for this child-friendly series. Unlike previous titles, here we have a fold-out page toward the end, in which Winnie's MASSIVE birthday cake, with many different layers, is revealed. That too adds to the fun! All in all, it's another winning entry in an entertaining series - I look forward to reading the rest of Winnie's adventures!

It's Winnie's birthday and she decides to have a garden party to celebrate and her cat Wilbur just loves parties so when he hears he simply purrs.

Invitations are sent out by Winnie-e-mail, Winnie makes herself a party dress and a lovely bow tie for Wilbur, who once again purrs while telling himself how lovely he looks.

Winnie, with Wilbur's help of course, makes plenty of food and then two days before the party she goes into the garden to get it ready. It is a tip but one word from Winnie and that all changes; the word, her favourite, Abracadabra!

There are plenty of attractions for her guests to enjoy and they all arrive with a whole host of presents for Winnie, including a magic trumpet from her cousin Cuthbert. They have great fun, including playing musical broomsticks and hide and seek. But in the latter game trouble arises when Winnie somehow loses all her guests.

She looks everywhere for them with no luck but then she has a brainwave and stands on her head and blows her magic trumpet and everyone reappears. Then it is time for the food and Winnie says her magic word, Abracadabra, and a massive cake appears - shown in the book in a magical four-page fold-up.

Everyone tucks in as Winnie tells Wilbur what a lucky witch she is. But Wilbur is too engrossed in eating the cheesecake and thinking what a lucky black cat he is!

Once again Winnie and Wilbur entertain immensely with the usual great Korky Paul illustrations in support.

Czarownica urządza urodziny - są na nich przewidziane niecodzienne atrakcje, specjalny wielosmakowy tort, labirynt, dmuchany zamek i zabawy dla zgrai niezwykłych przyjaciół.

Excellent illustrations. However, drawings of characters' outfits and hair were inconsistent 🌟✨💫

This book is amazing. Every point such as story, some words, and illustration is perfect. Not only Winnie but also Wilbur makes this book more fun.

At the end of this book Winnie made the biggest birthday cake. Each layer has a different flavor, like cheese, chocolate and etc. I really like this illustration.
