About the author

Kota Shivaram Karanth was a Kannada writer, social activist, environmentalist, Yakshagana artist, film maker and thinker. He was described as the "Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India who has been one of the finest novelists-activists since independence"by Ramachandra Guha. He was the third person among eight recipients of Jnanpith Award for Kannada the highest literary honour conferred by the Govt. of India.

Shivaram Karanth was born on 10 October 1902, in Kota near Udupi in the Udupi district of Karnataka to a Kannada family.He was influenced by Gandhi's principles and took part in Indian Independence movement while he was in college. He did not complete his education and went to participate in the Non-cooperation movement and canvassed for khadi and swadeshi for five years up to 1927. By that time Karanth had already started writing fiction-detective novels, to begin with as well as plays.

Karanth was an intellectual and environmentalist who tremendously contributed to art and culture of Karnataka. He is considered one of the greatest novelist in Kannada. Apart from his 47 novels, he also wrote 31 plays, four short stories, six books of essays and sketches, thirteen books on art, 2 volumes of poems, 9 encyclopedias, and 100+ of articles on various issues and subjects, including a history of world art in Kannada and a work on Chalukyan sculpture and architecture, a standard treatise on the Yakshagana (with which dramatic form, his name is identified), a three volume book of knowledge for children, a four volume encyclopedia on science for grown ups, 240 children's books, six books on travel, two books on birds, three Travelogues, an autobiography.

He has received several literary awards,.Namely, Jnanpith Award, Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Academy award and Pampa Award.

He passed away on 9th December 1997 in Manipal, Karnataka.

ಏಷ್ಟು ಅರೇ ಮೈಗಳ್ಳತನ ಮಾಡ್ತಿಯೋ ಅಂತ ಬೈಸ್ಕೊಂಡು ಸಾಕಾದವರು ಇದನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿ😁. ಜ್ಞಾನ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಗಳೆರಡರ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದಲೂ, ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಅದರ್ಶವಿರಬೇಕೆಂದಾದರೆ ಅದು ಮೈಗಳ್ಳತನ😅😍 ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು.

‘ಮೈಗಳ್ಳನ ದಿನಚರಿಯಿಂದ’ ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜನ ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಸಂಕಲನ. ಇದನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಇಂತಹ ಮೈಗಳ್ಳರನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲೋ ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅಲ್ವಾ ! ಅಂತ ಖಂಡಿತ ಉದ್ಘರಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ ! ಅರ್ಥಾತ್, ಹಲವರ ಬದುಕಿನ ಅನುಭವಗಳೇ ಪ್ರಬಂಧ ರೂಪು ತಳೆದಿವೆ.

ಏಳುವುದು, ಮದುವೆಯ ಆಮಂತ್ರಣ, ನಾಟಕಾವಲೋಕನ, ರಂಗಪ್ಪನವರ ರೈಲು ಪಯಣ, ಮುತ್ತಯ್ಯ ಮಾಸ್ತರು, ಚುನಾವಣೆ, ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡದ್ದು, ಕರ್ಮ ಮೀಮಾಂಸೆ, ಓದುವ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ, ಘಂಟೆಯ ನಂಟರ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ 13 ನಗೆ ಬರಹಗಳಿವೆ.

ತನ್ನ ಸೋಮಾರಿತನವನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಥಿಸಿ ಬಾಳುವವರು ಹಲವು ಮಂದಿ ! ಅವಸರ ಮಾಡದೇ ಅಮೆ ಗತಿಯ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಒಗ್ಗಿದವರು ಇನ್ನೆಷ್ಟೋ ಮಂದಿ. ಅಂತವರ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಹರಟೆಯ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಎಂಬ ಬರಹ ಬಹು ಇಷ್ಟಾವಾಯ್ತು. ಈ ಲೇಖನವನ್ನು ೫೦ ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ್ದಾದರೂ, ಅಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ! ಅಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ.. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪಾರ್ಟಿಯ ಕ್ಯಾಂಡಿಡೇಟೂ ಮೈಗಳ್ಳಪ್ಪನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದ ಓಟು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಓಟು ಕೇಳುವಾಗ ನೀಡುವ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಇದೆ ಅಲ್ವಾ, ೭೦ ವರ್ಷ ಕಳೆದರೂ ಆಯಾ ಪಾರ್ಟಿಗಳು ಇನ್ನೂ ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣವ ನೀಡಿ ಓಟು ಬೇಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ! ವಿಪರ್ಯಾಸ.

ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ಓದುವುದೆಂದರೆ ನನಗದೇನೋ ಉತ್ಸಾಹ. ಕಾರಣ ಅವರ ನೇರ ಮಾತು,ಮತ್ತು ಅಗಾಧ ಜ್ಞಾನ. ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳವಾಗಿ ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿದ ಹೆಸರು ಈ ಮೈಗಳ್ಳನ ದಿನಚರಿಯಿಂದ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನ ಜನರೇಷನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರೋರೆಲ್ಲ ಸೋಮಾರಿಗಳು ಯಾ ಮೈಗಳ್ಳರೇ ಅನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಆದರೂ ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜ ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಹೇಗಿರಬಹುದೆಂಬ ಕುತೂಹಲ ಹೆಚ್ಚೇ ಇತ್ತು. 14 ಪುಟ್ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕಥೆಗಳು. ಕೆಲವಂತೂ ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಧೀರ್ಘ ನಗು ತರುವಂತದ್ದು. ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು(ಚುನಾವಣೆ,ಕರ್ಮ ಮೀಮಾಂಸೆ,ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡದ್ದು) ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಡಿದ ಕೈಗನ್ನಡಿ. ಒಟ್ಟಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕತೆಗಳು ಒಂದಲ್ಲಾ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಗುವನ್ನೂ ಖುಷಿಯನ್ನೂ ಕೊಡುವಂತದ್ದು. ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ಮುಂದೇನು ಮುಂದೇನು ಅನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಓದಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗುವ ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜರ ಹಾಸ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಂತಜ್ಜರೆ ಸಾಟಿ.
ನೀವೆಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ಆದರ್ಶ ಮತ್ತು ಹಾಸ್ಯ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಓದಬಯಸುವಿರೆಂದರೆ ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿ :)

This book consists of short essays about (village) life from the perspective of a leisurely man. Written by Shivarama Karanth on behalf of an indolent friend whose thoughts and philosophies on various topics (like dream, fate, politics, reading & many more) has been duly captured.
ಎಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥಹೀನ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಮೈಗಳ್ಳನ ಮಾತುಗಳಿಂದ ಮನಗಾಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಒಂದು ಆಯ್ದ ಭಾಗ ಈ ಕೆಳಗೆ-
“ಮಾಡುವುದೂ ಬಿಡುವುದೂ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯ್ಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಸರಿಯೆ, ಬಿಟ್ಟರೂ ಸರಿಯೆ, ಖುಶಿ ಕಂಡಾಗ ಮಾಡುವ" ಎನ್ನುವ ಮನೋವೃತ್ತಿ ಮಾತ್ರವೇ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾದ ಮನೋವೃತ್ತಿ.
