Benio learns both why Rokuro ran amok at Hinatsuki Dorm and a secret about her beloved brother. Then, when a friend is possessed by the curse of the Kegare, Rokuro is faced with a terrible decision…
Lots of big twists but they all feel standard and tropey. I don't think I care for the art style, all the faces look weird and inconsistent. This is giving me Black Clover vibes but instead of swords everyone says a lot of words and calls it an exorcism spell or something.
A good volume basically concerned with plot. Benio finds out the truth about both Rokuro and her brother's involvement in the Hinatsuki Massacre. They, and we, also learn more about the curse of the Kegare. This was an informative volume and gets us ready for some action now that the plot has been developed further. Also included some humour with cute scenes between Benio and Rokuro.
*deep breath* Twin Star Exorcist, honey, darling, do you understand the concept of power creep? Do you? DO YOU?!
First of all, why is the series introducing ANOTHER villain so early on? And why, pray tell, is this villain STRONGER THAN ONE OF THE TWELVE GUARDIANS WHEN HE'S THE SAME AGE AS BENIO AND ROKURO?! Come on, the series introduced a high-power Basara in the last volume, and now we're being introduced to a 14 year old who is stronger than one of the twelve most powerful exorcists in the series. Bare in mind, Seigen has only fought against Kegare Mayura and Rokuro, so we don't even know his full potential. Oh, but it doesn't matter because he's severely injured during the fight against Yuto and is probably never going to be able to fight again. At least they didn't kill him off, which is where I thought that fight was going, so thank you Sukeno for not killing off a character audiences were only JUST introduced to.
I'd also like to add that while I'm frustrated he may never be able to fight again, I'm hoping that's going to lead to him bonding more with Mayura, which I'd love to see. I also loved seeing Benio and Rokuro working together to save Mayura rather than kill her and I do enjoy seeing them work together as a whole. I also loved seeing Benio apologize to Rokuro about Yuto's involvement in the Hinatsuki Dorm Tragedy. She didn't have to apologize since it clearly wasn't her fault, but the fact that she feels responsible purely because Yuto and her are siblings was really touching and it seemed to establish the bond between them. I will say, I really do enjoy them together and am totally 110% down for this ship.
Anyway, while I was frustrated and mad about the daunting lack of power creep in this series, the action as awesome, there were some great character moments, and I genuinely enjoyed reading this volume. This is a compulsively fast series to read and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
Quite a few twists in this one. We learn the Kegare were all formerly humans (which anyone who has read any exorcist battle manga could guess), but we see Mayura transform firsthand (she's cured later, though). And Benio's presumed-dead brother turns out to be the one who turned everyone into Kegare at the Hinatsuki dorms two years ago. Also, he's still alive.
Yuto is kind of "boring" as an antagonist, just like the Basara character last volume. It's just plain "evil for the sake of evil." I guess there's kind of a "strength for the sake of strength" element as well, or possibly even "evil for the sake of strength," which kind of works better. But it still mostly comes off as "edgy."
Rokuro finally gets his costume from the cover of Volume 1.

Benio has such a nice shitter under her tights when running against the big Kegare in Chapter 8...!!! 🤤
Kegare Mayura is hot, too...!!! 🥵

I'm totally hooked on this series now. The characters are compelling, and I really like their determination and motivation for their actions. They value friendship and others over themselves. This series is what I strive to be, someone who can be relied on. If you're looking for a well written supernatural exorcist manga with fantastic characters, look no further than Twin Star Exorcists.
Oh wow! Yuto is Benio's brother! And I loved finding out that Roku actually was helping that night, and I feel so sad for all of the guilt he was carrying :( And then his old great friend got struck by the Kegare Curse :( And her father, one of the Guardians! This was chock-full of feels, I really hope the other 4 Guardians arrive on time!
This is by far my favourite volume! The grief and trauma that both Rokuro and Benio faced is just too much for me to handle. Seigen is such a great guy, he is so protective of Rokuro that he made me cry! Love it!
It's not perfect, but the story went some really interesting places here as truths about both Benio's brother and the Hinatsuki incident are revealed, in ways that get to the core story line of the series directly and simply.
Starting immediately after the shocking events of the last volume, this volume barrels into the actions and doesn't pull any punches.
There has always been something more with the Hinatsuki tragedy and we finally get to learn the whole story of it. Not only does it affect both Rokuro and Benio, but it will change how they approach their future.
I like that despite being this 'foretold powerful couple', the twin stars are not immediately all powerful. No, there are other people more powerful than them out there, both good and bad. Having natural talent does not mean that you will immediately be the best, it simply gives them an edge to work together and excel. This is perfectly highlighted and executed and I loved how it worked out.
This volume was very emotional. It deals with the past in a major way and it changes how the two main characters see each other as they finally learn all of their biggest secrets. We also learn some secrets from those around them, though I'm sure that won't be the last time.
This story goes from plunging me into heartbreaking pain at the loss and grief in the story, to hope for change, and then manages to through in just the right humour to have me giggling again. The story continues to amaze and I can't wait to read more!
Benio is told the truth behind the Hinatsuki Tragedy but it is not until later that she discovers the whole truth, that her brother Yuto was actually behind the entire tragedy and Rokuro was the one to exorcise everyone from the dorm. She learns about the Kegare Curse that turns exorcists into kegare and while she is discovering information about the kegare curse Mayura turns into a kegare.
Overall a great volume that introduces Yuto, the evil that Rokuro and Benio will have to fight in the future and the truth behind the tragedy that Rokuro was running away from. There is still a lot more to be explained but this volume was great for putting the pieces together so the future volumes can move forward.
I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.
