This was . . . okay. While I wasn't tempted to simply leave it, it wasn't terribly difficult to put down or take a break. I think that's mainly due to Mel. She's an emotional basket-case and seems determined to do everything in the hardest way possible. Worse, she does so out of a deep-seated fear of rejection and loss that undermines everything she does. So the whole time everybody is going on about how strong she is, she knows, as does the reader through her, that it's all a complete lie and quite the opposite in reality.

Offsetting that, at least, is Dan. He's not only more fleshed-out as a character, but he's all kinds of engaging as well. I liked that he's as much discovering himself as he is getting to know ranching and Mel and Montana. And I liked his steady growth from a guy who is mainly curious to examine his family origins into someone who knows what he wants and is determined to become the kind of guy who can have it.

Which boils down to an average romance with flashes of fun from Dan and Mel getting to know one another being offset by periods of bewilderment at them (mostly Mel) being unbelievably bone-headed and self-defeating. Oh, and the occasional random drama showing up out of the blue didn't help any. I'm not sure if I'll pursue the series as Caleb was a brooding weakling feeling oh. so. much. pain. that I'm not terribly eager to get to know him any better...

A note about Steamy: About the middle of my steam tolerance. There are two or three explicit sex scenes (depending on how you count them as one "scene" spans a couple chapters with a micro-break between). I liked how they supported the growth of their relationship, though Helm walks back a lot of the progress pretty fast afterwards.

Hero vs Llama. #PanicEnsues

Rebel Cowboy surprised me. It took me a little while to get into this one. I was starting to think that maybe this wasn't the read for me when it turned things around, grabbed me completely, and left me eagerly looking forward to more from the series and this very damaged family.

The quick of it is that after a couple rough losses Dan--who is a famous hockey player--is being accused of throwing games. Needing to get away from all of it he heads to his grandfather's abandoned farm and decides he's gonna fix the farm up and...ranch. He's gonna need help figuring it all out, though, and that means the help of one of the local cowgirls who is in desperate need of funds--to save her own family ranch-- and willing to tolerate this city boy...for now.

Alright so. These two. Whew. Dan and Mel are both damaged, running scared and have their emotions locked down tight. They aren't the easiest characters to get to know which made getting into the book--especially with Mel's snarky-mean attitude towards Dan--a bit of a challenge.

I liked Dan pretty much from the start, though, He's successful, charming, trying to figure out what to do with his life now that the only thing he's ever been good from is being taken from him. He's got a lot of insecurities about being good enough that so made me hurt for him. He's a good guy and I liked seeing him find himself as he worked on the farm.
"What do you want on your toast?"

"I guess peanut butter."

He slathered it on the toast for both of them, then puttered around getting everything on the table in front of her. A big plate of food and a full cup of coffee. He could feel her watching him, but much like he had with Mystery Llama, he chattered and worked and pretended like he didn't notice.

And because he knew at least a thing or two about women, he didn't mention that he was comparing her to a llama in his head.
Mel on the other hand was...prickly. She's a hardass and can be downright bitchy when it comes to Dan. Right from the start she had a mad-on about him over his wealth and being an outsider. It was hard for me to relate to her she eventually won me over. So much of her bitchy is a front as she tries to look strong and take everything on her shoulders. Her family life is hard and the only way she's getting through it seems to be pulling on the bitch attitude to keep from being hurt and she just doesn't know how to let that go. She's a scared one to say the least. And as Dan started to figure her out I started to get a little more sympathetic to her as a whole.

I don't mean to make her sound horrible. She just had a long journey to go, ya know? It tested my nerves sometimes but she got there. And, somehow, these two managed to work. It's not a quick romance or an easy one, obviously, but they settled in and worked well together on the farm. The chemistry and heat was there and slowly the friendship and romance caught up. When she screws up she grovels well which pleased me. <--- Yes, I'll admit to being a bit bitchy myself. I need a good grovel after a screw up. lol

All in all, while it was a bit of a slow grab, Rebel Cowboy did grab me in the end. I loved watching Dan figure out his life and passions, seeing the abandoned farm come back to life day by day, and even seeing Mel let down her defenses and let someone be there for her for a change. It wasn't always easy but it was worth it in the end. I'll be back for more.

~~~
50% in: Well this one is interesting so far. I kinda love him and his llama. The heroine is...prickly. I'm having trouble relating to her though I know she's got a lot she's dealing with and that's what makes her such a hardass and difficult. She's wearing on me so there's hope :D
Mel Shaw needed to get money fast. When offered a position as a ranch consultant to a big NHL player, she thought her prayers were answered…until she laid eyes on the sex on a stick city slicker who doesn’t know the first thing about running a ranch.
Hiding from bad press and a career destroying performance in a championship NHL game, Dan returns to his grandparent’s ranch. He wants to find a place where he belongs since hockey has been his life since his parent’s divorce when he was a teen. He never expected a sexy as sin cowgirl giving him the wakeup call of his life.
Fun, exciting, sexy and sweet are just a few words that come to mind to describe Rebel Cowboy. It is a sports star meets ranch hand story with lots of sexual chemistry and a spirited llama or few.
If you are looking for an easy, entertaining contemporary romance Rebel Cowboy would be the a great choice.
DNF at Chapter 3 Will return to this one later.
Montana, ranch life, a hockey player turned cowboy, and a strong woman. Sounded superb to me!
However, I did three chapters of two people sniping at each other for no reason other than they had some preconceived notions about what the other should be and a resistance to attraction.
Normally, I give a book some more time to show me it has more. And I will, but at the moment, I am in the mood to smack both protagonists and walk off in a huff. Sooo, I'll wait until I'm in a different mood to give this pair a chance to get over it since I see some real potential for a strong, engaging story with her background and his playing into it.
LLAMA FARMING IN ROMANCE. What a great hero.
Also, despite what I just said about hard families not being a thing I'm into right now, I liked how it manifested here. I liked the heroine's damage, the closed off emotional stuff felt very true to me. And I loved how the hero wouldn't let the heroine walk away from him, how they worked through shit together.
Broken people, becoming whole together. That's the best.
Mel Shaw loves her Montana ranch - she just doesn't love her current circumstances. The ranch needs a lot of work, and her brother and father are not helpful. Her brother drinks too much and has a host of other problems. Her father fell off his horse a few years ago, and is now paralyzed from the waist down. His spirit is broken and he rarely leaves his bedroom. With her mother leaving the family when Mel was quite young, it's up to her now to keep the ranch going. She is tired and overwhelmed. When a NHL (hockey) star moves into his grandparent's ramshackle neighboring ranch and offers Mel $20,000 to teach him how to be a rancher, she desperately needs the money so agrees to be his consultant.
Dan's NHL career is about over. After two losses in the champion Stanley Cup game, and some whispers of cheating, Dan is done. His grandparents have neglected their ranch for years, and Dan thinks a summer in Montana might be just what he needs. He doesn't expect "Mel" to be a gorgeous country lady - and it takes him a bit to get used to her. Mel has zero time for his charms or flirtations, but Dan gets a glimpse of the softer side in her, and he starts to fall hard. He also decides to turn his ranch into a llama ranch, which I highly approve of.
Mel is a very prickly heroine. I'm not always a fan of this type of heroine - but she worked for me in this book. Partly because her situation in life fully supports her being this touchy. She is so exhausted and overwhelmed with the ranch, she is at her limit.
"I could use a sleep-in every damn day for the rest of my damn life, but I do not have that luxury, and, this summer, neither do you." She slammed a hand onto the counter next to the coffeepot. "You could at least have coffee going at this point."
"Well, you're pleasant this morning," he muttered.
She is also so tightly strung that the idea of letting go just an inch, would destroy her. Her demeanor and the way she handles her life and Dan are very consistent in this book as well. Even in bed, she can't relax and enjoy herself at first - it's just not in her nature. The author does a nice job of keeping Mel true to herself. Her brother is a big pain in the ass, her father has given up on life - and Mel is just trying to keep everyone alive and fed.
Dan has a lot of patience. He knows Mel's hard-ass attitude is because she has a lot of responsibility. He tries to make jokes and keep things light - and sometimes he can get a quick smile out of her.
He'd probably never spent so much time wondering about someone before. At least someone who wasn't himself or an opponent on the ice. But Mel was like no one he'd ever known.
He starts to realize he enjoys this life in Montana. He finds a surprise llama on his property and kind of falls in love. (There was definitely some giggling with the llama). He really doesn't know what he is doing, but he likes to learn. While hockey doesn't play a huge part in this book, Dan is famous in the hockey world and that is portrayed well in the book.
Their romance is sexy and starts as them just letting off steam, but eventually they realize what they have is much more deep. I like how their romance plays out.
"Do you ever get tired of feeling like life keeps beating you over the head?" she asked into the silence of the car.
"Lately, yes."
"Do you want to go have sex and pretend it's not hard?"
God, he wanted to do that. So he went with a joke. "Well, something will be hard."
A good start to a new series for sure.
Dan Sharpe seems to have made, and continue to make a mess of his prestigious hockey career. Hockey is all he has ever had; but now, he’s having to retreat to avoid causing more damage. When his grandfather suggests taking over the “slightly” run down family ranch, Dan decides this would be perfect during his stint of reprieve.
Mel Shaw is a family girl and looks forward to running her father’s ranch. However, a sudden injury thrusts this responsibility onto her much quicker than any of the Shaw family anticipated. Her formerly delinquent brother, Caleb, and Mel do everything in their power to get the Shaw ranch running as it should be. They know they can make their ranch profitable. And taking a 3 month consulting job will really help the two achieve this.
The meeting between Dan and Mel is rather amusing. It’s the typical thought that Mel is a man, turns out to be a woman, both are secretly attracted to each other and fight that attraction kind of book. Watching the struggle and downfall between the two was interesting. I really liked Dan’s character. He was the cocky athlete that I immediately love as a character. Mel was a character that really fought for her independence, rightfully so, but tended to go overboard. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book with Caleb.
It is not that I disliked the book -- mainly I felt indifferent about it. It had a lot to do with the heroine, Mel Shaw.
At one point, Mel describes herself as "hot and cold, curt for no reason, unnecessarily bitcy" ... and I couldn't agree more. I realized that her Mom leaving has a significant role in Mel being standoffish. Mel doesn't let people close to her because it's heartbreaking when they leave; she refuses to let anyone in, including Dan. But this also makes her unapproachable as heroine. I became slightly unsympathetic towards her as a character, especially when she repetitively refusing help or dismissing Dan and everyone else.
Dan is better as a character -- throughout he shows the willingness to try to do his best, both with Mel and his grandparents' ranch.
I don't think this is a series that I will follow though. Mel's family is a bit too dysfunctional for me to enjoy. Mel's relationship with her brother Caleb left me cold, which is a problem because Caleb is the hero for the next book. Maybe Caleb is indeed a failure and Mel has reasons for not trusting him with their family farm, but I guess I prefer to read series with loving siblings. On top of that there is a dramatic turn of around 80%, and that screams drama to me.
I give kudos for the llama though (I don't encounter many llamas in romance *LOL*) since the llama contributes to one of the most unique lines I've ever read in a romance novel...
Orgasming was like that mystery llama—she had no idea where that would even come from. -- Chapter 12
Forced to take a time-out from his hockey career, Dan never expected his time at the family homestead to evolve into something bigger.
Needing extra money to support the family ranch Mel signs up to help the wannabe-cowboy with advice. But what is she to do with all the chemistry between them?
Working together grows into something more, but can they have a future when Dan is to return to his hockey?
Contemporary Romance, smutty fluff and feelings in a great combo.
Dan is getting a ride awakening when it comes to living in the country, "he looked around the kitchen with a thoughtful look on his face. “You know, I hadn’t given it much thought. McDonald’s nearby? I haven’t had one of their hash browns in years.” She stared. And stared. And stared a little more. Dan grimaced. “No McDonald’s, huh?” Dan really is a sweet and caring man, “we can figure it out, honey. I’m not going anywhere .” Not any damn where until he knew she would be okay. Hell, maybe not even then." I really enjoyed this book I loved Dan.
Mel Shaw learned at a very young age never to feel. Never feel secure, never feel love, never feel wanted, never feel happy, never feel content, never feel like you deserve to be held like a woman wants and needs.
When she was young her mother walked out on the family. At that point she took over where her mother left off as the woman of the house. Yet, looking like her mother never helped because it made affection from her father less likely to happen and more standoffish in the affection towards her. Yet, as the father of a daughter to inherit the ranch he groomed her.
Then not what she could have ever dreamed of happening happened. Her dad was out riding his horse and it threw him and he is paralyzed from the waist down. So, now she is in charge of the ranch that has fallen on hard times no thanks to her brother Caleb who like his mother wanted to burn all the bridges she had left in town plus his and theirs too. His drinking had gotten out of hand. When she tried to help and asked what the problem was he gotten out of hand and mean. When their father ended up in the hospital he sobered up and said he was sorry. Coming home to help out.
Yet, the damage had been done with those in town so she needed to get a second job. Consulting was it for her. She was in luck one came in Dan Sharpe a big time hockey player from Chicago. She world get twenty grand for 3 months work. Not bad except her moral compass was showing. She was a money snob, rich snob, or you could call it the have and have nots snob. The chip was getting bigger on her shoulder and her father’s anger, her brother’s sorrow and secrets were not helping it at all. She was drowning.
Dan Sharpe was coming to the only place he could. Where the press couldn’t find him. You see he was going to be staying at the home where his mother grew up. The place where his grandpa said he found the love of life – his grandma.
Yet, his mother hated the place and had never returned after she had left home. His grandparents loved it but once his grandma’s health had started to slip his grandpa knew it was time to move his grandma from Montana to Florida. He knew it killed his grandpa to leave his beloved home. Yet, since his parents had divorced when he was five and they knew it was so hard on him no one ever spoke feelings. Hence no emotions or relationships of any real value for Dan.
Which leads to the trouble he was having getting anyone to believe that he was telling the truth about not throwing the game. The truth was he buckled under the pressure. He was more in his head about how he had missed the shot the year before and how not to do it again. When it came time to act he blew it and did it again. Put doubt in the minds of the judges who knew he never missed or failed especially on things this easy. Calling into question whether he cheated or not. He told his parents he was going to the ranch to wait out the decision for the summer.
The morning after he arrived bright and early there was a loud pounding at his door and when he answered there is Buck and a cute cowgirl. But the way he is dressed and the look on his face the cowgirl when greets them with a “Howdy, partners,” he said. Making the cowgirl look at Buck and after introductions, “You didn’t tell him?” “Sorry, too fun.” “You’re a jerk, Buck!” That was his introduction to the neighborhood. Cowgirl Mel Shaw knew she was in trouble. Sexy man in his sleeping ware, driving a Harley instead of a truck, and living in a house that had no one in it in the last twenty years. That was not good.
See how two people from two different worlds come together to meet each other’s needs. See how they maneuver the roadblocks in their lives that cause them heartache and stress. Are they really going after the dream they wanted for themselves or the one someone else had for them? Are they brave enough to go after what they truly want? Confronting the demons that lurk?
I so enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed and the storyline is well developed. The twist and turn of emotions keeps you interested until the very end. I give this 5 stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at:
This is a sometimes funny, sometimes sad story that is a fun read. Ms. Helm does a great job with character development, as always. In Rebel Cowboy, Mel Shaw is a hard-working cowgirl trying to save her family's ranch any way she can. So she accepts a huge fee from a guy from the city who's coming to take over his grandfather's ranch if she will help him run it. The city slicker turns out to be a suspended NHL player, Dan Sharpe, who's been accused of throwing a game. Hockey is the only thing he's known since his parents divorced when he was a kid. So he decides to escape to the old Montana ranch that belonged to his grandparents and take some time to get himself back in shape and see if another hockey team will sign him.
Mel is wearing herself out trying to get her family ranch out of deep debt, keep her father from sinking into a depressive state about his wife leaving them years ago, and keep her brother focused on doing the chores at their ranch so she can work Dan's ranch while she tries teaching him what she can about ranching. Mel is pretty prickly about spending any time with Dan that's not strictly about the job and at first she doesn't come across as a really likeable person. But when you dig deeper and find out her background, it's easy to see that she's been suffering for a long time, feeling the sting of her mother's rejection and hating the fact that she looks enough like her mom that she thinks it triggers bad memories for her father every time he sees her face.
Dan is used to being the good time guy out on the ice and with his fans. So the rigors of ranching, including what to do about a mysterious llama that's living on his property, is a real mystery for him to deal with, although he starts to enjoy the open spaces and clean air. He's not really sure whose llama it is or what to feed it, but it's a cute distraction in this totally cute story. And when Mel finally gives Dan a chance and gets to know what's behind his handsome face and sports persona, she finds someone who's been hurting as badly as she has.
I really enjoyed this fun story, although Dan is much more likeable than Mel most of the time, with a sweet and subtle sense of humor. But, who doesn't love a sweet and sexy hockey player turned cowboy?
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.
Read the full review on Bookaholics Not-So-Anonymous.
Note: This ARC was provided by Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for an honest review.
Daniel Sharpe needs Mel Shaw to show him the ins and outs of managing a working ranch, but Mel doesn't really think a wealthy professional athlete like him will really put in the work, what more stick around for the long haul. This is the crux of the conflict that goes on in their non-relationship. Both Dan and Mel have parents who ended up divorced and, as is often the case, it's the children that suffer, and not necessarily from the divorce itself but everything that led up to it and everything else that happened after the papers were signed. Mel's used to not investing in anyone emotionally, but Dan is the kind of man who's all in, something that's difficult for Mel to grasp, which is why she convinces herself on a daily basis that he won't be staying. In the midst of Dan's hockey woes and all Mel's family issues, their future precariously wavers.
There are a lot of strong emotions when it comes to Dan and Mel, especially the latter because she tends to hold them all in, refusing to break down. Of course, that doesn't mean that this book is a tearjerker, because it does have these lighthearted moments that catch you off-guard. Case in point: Mystery the llama and Dan's llama ranch idea. Have I ever come across a cowboy/rancher story that had llamas? Nope. So, naturally, this added delight helps to make the book stand out. But then, with a strong, complex love story, a prickly female lead character, and a male lead character possibly suffering from mountain crazies, Rebel Cowboy was a book that I devoured in one sitting. And now that I'm curious about both Caleb and Summer Shaw, I can't wait to read the rest of the Big Sky Cowboys series. 4.5 stars, rounded off to five stars, for this series starter. ♥
3.5stars From NHL star turned llama rancher, Dan Sharpe is an all-around guy. He’s laid-back, yet determined, and has a sense of humor that only adds more oomph to his hotness; which is why Mel Shaw couldn’t help but to fall for him, despite her attempts to keep their relationship business only.
Helm’s sexy and playful, yet cocky, dialogue was beyond entertaining. I enjoyed the banter, for the most part, and following Dan on his new venture was inspiring. I understood why Mel was as difficult as she was, – she’d had a really hard life – but I must admit I was a tad bit turned off by her behavior at times; however, both characters are strong, which is to be appreciated. They each had a plan and were both dedicated to seeing it through. The relationship developed in somewhat of an odd manner (for lack of a better term), and the discovery at the end felt somewhat out-of-place. It was like a slightly irregularly- shaped piece being fit into a puzzle. It worked, but not as smoothly.
My favorite secondary character was actually the llama – just because. No offense to the other characters.
Overall, the story was good. It held my interest, and I did not regret the time I spent reading it. I plan to read Outlaw Cowboy, the second in the series.
Rebel Cowboy (Big Sky Cowboys #1) by Nicole Helm Nicole Helm’s Rebel Cowboy is a genuine story with real-life issues.  In order to get money to keep her ranch afloat, Mel Shaw takes on a job helping NHL Star Dan Sharpe getting his Montana ranch up and running.  This contemporary western/sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.
Rebel Cowboy was a realistic and heartfelt novel.  At times, I felt it dragged a bit, but I found it an enjoyable read.  The characters are likeable.  Mel is doing everything she can to keep her family's ranch running.  She is dedicated and hard working.  Dan is considering his life after hockey and decides to restore his grandparents' Montana ranch.  He is smart.  I like that he is not flashy.  I like the llama.  I also appreciated that he does what he feels is right for him and not what others expect him to do.  The two characters have an appealing chemistry.  The story has some interesting twists.
I really liked the conceit of this (ex-NHLer turned llama farmer!) and it was competently written. Really liked both POV characters being grownups who talked to each other and grew as people, that was refreshing. It felt a little longer than it needed to be, though I must admit I did not see the big Thing near the end coming at all, and I thought that was handled sensitively/didn't take the too-easy route. (I did have to just roll with the whole "I was accused of throwing the SCF in Game 7" thing, but by romance novel standards I guess that's not too bad as implausible things go.)
Quite interested in seeing the next book/what happens with Caleb. (Having 3 chapters of Book 2 at the end of book 1 is a canny and unfair thing to do; much more tempting to just go pick it up immediately, heh.)
So I can't quite put my finger on it, but this book just...well it didn't really draw me in. I had no problems putting this down to read another book.
On the one hand, I will admit to liking Dan. It was interesting watching him learn about the ranch and his desire to get involved with the llamas. I did laugh at how Mystery showed up and then just stayed and he didn't really question it. I also liked the way he handled Scott at the end although I did find myself wishing he'd maybe tried a little harder instead of leaving when Mel told him to go away. I did wish that he'd gotten to have it out with Caleb and their dad instead of just the conversation he had with Caleb but I also feel like that one conversation had a bigger impact than an all out brawl. I did get a little annoyed at the way he kept hedging everything. Although he definitely got over that pretty quick and seemed like he choose his path pretty easily.
Mel really kind of annoyed me. I don't mind tough girls who think they can't break, I really don't. But the way Mel handled things made me want to throttle her. She spent so much time telling herself she would not get involved with Dan and then they're suddenly involved and because she thinks that everyone always leaves, she's telling him how to live his life. No offense, but her family was not the rule and just because her mom disappeared and her dad retreated does not mean that everyone around her will leave. The fact that she walked away from Tyler instead of settling was decent although I did find myself wanting a little more on that. I will admit to liking the fact that she walked away from Shaw, even though she still annoyed me because she'd wake up with a "I can't be strong anymore but if I'm not no one will be" attitude and then she'd turn around and take it out on Dan.
On the one hand, I did find myself wanting to know more about Caleb and all his crap, but on the other I don't know that I'm interested enough to pick up the rest of the series.
Rebel Cowboy is book 1 in the Big Sky Cowboys series and also book 1 for me for author Nicole Helm. I am currently in a cowboy phase, ha, so I saw this on Overdrive and scooped it right up to read over. A Harley Davidson parked in between dusty pick up trucks always gets right to my soul.
Rebel Cowboy features a NHL player down on his luck named Dan Sharpe. He goes home to his family’s ranch to get his head back in the game and relax. Hires a ranch consultant named Mel Shaw and hope he can help get him started on his ranching ambition. Until it turns out Mel Shaw is a she NOT a he and she makes him start to think twice about everything. Can he ditch the bad attitude and bad reputation that follows him and show her who he truly is (if he even knows himself).
Mel Shaw is hanging on by a thread. She is so tired from holding it all together, the ranch, her dad, her brother, the family name; she doesn’t know how much more she can take. Enter an offer from a rich professional hockey player turned amateur rancher to help her guide him starting a ranch and it’s money she just can’t turn down. She wasn’t ready to see past the stereotypical jock jerk and get to know the honest man beneath. Will she drop her own guard and stereotype to let him see the real her? Does she even know who that girl is anymore?
Throw in abandonment issues, famous parent, self pity, secondary character issues and a llama and we are off and running. This book got me on all levels, I was laughing out loud, tearing up, turned on, researching llama care and routing for the both of them. I can’t wait to read the next books in the series and see how each character I’ve come to know finds what they are looking for. A great read from Nicole Helm and definitely now on my list of go to authors. Do yourself a favor and buy, rent, borrow Rebel Cowboy today.
I love me some cowboys!
I really enjoyed this book. I love reading about cowboys. This is my first book by Author Nicole Helm and it was so much fun to read. I highly enjoyed the banter between Dan and Mel. It was hilarious how the two behaved with one another. But also how the sparks flew and when ignited they burn fast and hard. It was delicious. I love love love the references from the movie The Cutting Edge! (Dan is a hockey player) I laughed so hard when he said it because it was perfectly timed and I could totally see his face! I cant wait to see if in future books we get to see how the farm turns out. This book is a perfect blend of emotions, hilarity, snark, jerk moments and chemistry and more! I really enjoyed every page. Oh and there is a shocking surprise/twist that you will never see coming!! My jaw hit the floor. But I think it was definitely needed for the healing in that family to begin. I'm sad for Caleb and Mel's dad. But I really hope everyone gets their acts together lol now i just gotta read book two! This author just got another new fan!! I can't wait to see and experience everything she writes! Her books are truly a experience not to be missed but to be savored and enjoyed!!
I loved this so much. Alternately sweet and funny, the banter between Dan and Mel was perfect. But watching them fall was so rewarding. Dan learning how to be strong, to find a purpose, to want to be there for someone and fall in love . . . and Mel, learning how to let go, to be vulnerable and let someone else help her and care for her, to learn that that's not a weakness. Watching them fall in love with each other was beautiful.
The llamas were a fun touch, too :)
An office romance, secrets, and assumptions push Trish to do unthinkable things. When her brother asks for help she almost risks his trust when she falls for his business partner. Will she keep it professional will she dive into her feelings?
This is a hot and heavy story that is fast paced and full of risk.
I received and advance reader copy for a fair and honest reveiw. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Very really do I encounter DNF books, but this was one of the lucky few! I made it 250 pages so I'm counting it ... Obviously this is not meant to be a 'good' book but it was still impossible to get through.
The characters were incredibly unlikable and annoying, the romance felt fake and rushed, and the inner monologues and plot were incredibly repetitive and dry. Maybe the last 100 pages popped off, but guess I'll never know.
A lot more angst that I thought I was getting into! Still a pretty good read, and I was interested enough to grab the third volume from my library shelves as well. Just from scanning the first couple of pages, I think it fills in enough of what happens in book 2 that I may just skip that - it seems to have even more angst and drama than book 1!
This book was a lot more of an emotional rollercoaster than I was expecting! It could have done with a couple fewer iterations of "I'm too damaged/no, I'M too damaged," especially in the last third of the book, but on the whole, the writing was strong, the feels were good, and it got me interested in reading the later books in the series. 3/5 stars.
