Brietta, neophyte graduate of the Academy of Magic, has just acquired the ability to metamorph and been promoted to Dame. Now she’s assigned to discover what lies behind the disappearance of one of the gatekeepers, and why the gate to that land is now closed. Worse, for no discernable reason, she’s also required to have a gate keepers son, Locke, tag along.
On the first planet they visit, the reason for Locke’s presence is evident. While taking refuge from the heat of the desert in some caves, Brietta, in her coyote form, is attacked and badly injured by a puma. Locke, in a desperate attempt to save her, drives off the animal and heals Brietta. When fully recovered, she discovers that her attacker is none other than the newly admitted third member of her team, a young man driven out by his own people for prophetic dreams and his ability to assume the form of a puma.
An uneasy truce is declared and they travel to a third planet, where Jacoba, a Magic Academy reject, now strives to broaden her power base. The trio enjoin the cooperation of Karla, Jacoba’s daughter, to restore balance to the land. It is soon discovered that Jacoba is behind the inoperative gate. When Jacoba discovers Karla’s treachery, she returns to confront her. In a showdown, Brietta, Locke and Airel have their power temporarily stolen from them. Locating and stopping Jacoba becomes paramount until they discover Jacoba is only a front to hide the actions of the real antagonist, known only as the Dark One. When they finally discover him, it takes the combined efforts of everyone to halt his evil plans.
