Jackson Hole features the greatest vertical drop of any ski resort in the United States, and has extremely varied terrain. The Wyoming resort boasts such famous runs as Corbet's Couloir, Rendezvous Bowl, and the Hobacks. Yet there has never been a book about Jackson Hole -- until now. David Gonzales tells the whole story, past and present, of this daunting but irresistible mountain. He covers the geography, geology, and history of the area, and devotes a full chapter to its development by pioneer Paul McCollister. Chapters feature Olympic medalist Pepi Stiegler, who ran the ski school for decades; the famous Jackson Hole Ski Patrol; and superstars of the sport like Tommy Moe, Doug Coombs, and Rob Kingswill. The book is illustrated with spectacular photos by two top skiing photographers.
I discovered this gem while reading an article in the Mountain Gazette (highly recommend). Been fortunate to spend time with family around Jackson in the Summer. This is a wonderful history book with beautiful photographs and storytelling about the area and those who made it the unique place it is. I learned so much. Sad to research the names in the chapters only to discover many of them died while doing what they loved… skiing on a mountain. Highly recommend.
