The Getty has an extensive collection of photography, a vigorous programme of exhibitions and an outstanding complementary series of publications. Their associate curator, Paul Martineau, here gives us the first expert 21st century biography of a leading photographer, teacher and editor, Minor White (1908-1976) who was last the subject of a major exhibition and publication nearly 25 years ago. White believed, fervently, in the possibility of the images that the medium could create having the power to speak of the spiritual life. And it was a spiritual journey for on a personal level, he had found it hard to come to terms with his homosexuality, and to overcome his loneliness; he sought with the camera to balance, we are told, his introspection with an engagement with the observed world.
