Frankie’s cousin wants her to do three things this year ...

1. Lose her inhibitions
2. Do something spectacularly stupid
3. Fall madly in love

Travelling was Frankie’s life. As the daughter of a big-name evangelist, she’s been able to feed her hunger for new sights throughout most of her teenage years. Then a hushed-up scandal gets her thrown off the tour circuit and stuck at her uncle’s house in the town of Augur’s Well.

Forced to repeat her failed senior year, it looks like a dismal existence for Frankie—until she’s invited to the bizarre meeting place of four mismatched people ... and falls hard for the fascinating, secretive Cain Aleister.

Furtive meetings in an underground chamber ... Latin words carved into a stone wall ... intense desire ... and a secret so elusive she’ll do almost anything to bust it open. Until now, Frankie never believed in grand passions—but that’s not the only one of her beliefs about to implode right before her eyes.

Looks like Frankie’s going to score three for three.

Downfall by Ms. Wasley was an incredible debut into the world of New Adult Romance. It took me no time to breeze through Downfall. From the very beginning clear until the end, Ms. Wasley kept the pace fast and the reader on the edge of their seat.

The cover is delicious and I LOVED the chapter titles... they set the feel for what each chapter had in store.

The story begins with our main female protagonist, Frankie. The prologue certainly had me terrified but instantly drew me in... I had to discover how Frankie found herself in such a position. We then go back to the beginning and find out that Frankie (the daughter of an evangelist) is pretty much kicked off her fathers book tour. Formally she was pretty much his marketing manager and did her job well. Where the conflict comes in at is that Frankie is herself not to blame for getting kicked off the tour and dumped at her uncles house, but it is actually her sister, Vanessa's, fault. And Frankie resents her for it. It was interesting to see the dynamics in these two sisters relationship. Sisters are sisters. You fight, grow, overcome and fight again... but you always love each other and the author did a wonderful job building the relationship here.

So Frankie is living with her uncle and her cousin (who was one of my favorite characters) Albion. I loved him. He was so large and full of life. I loved how Albion always comforted her and gave wonderful advice... he is the cousin everyone needs in their life.

Albion sets the stage for Frankie to get reacquainted with Jude... a guy who is totally into Frankie. The problem with this entire scenario is that Frankie is somewhat attracted to Jude until she meets Cain.

Cain is the leader, so to speak, of this club that meets at Gaunt House. This part was super mysterious. I was on the edge of my seat reading, needing to find out who Cain is, what he's capable of, the tension that built between him and Frankie.... it was awesome!!!!!

I will not include any spoilers, but the budding relationship between Cain and Frankie was spectacular. I loved the mystery and supernatural feel to it.

Another element that I need to comment on was the descriptive detail... The writing was so vivid in Downfall that I felt as though I were there. This is truly a book that comes to life.

If you are a fan of New Adult Romance, snatch up Downfall now and look for more great things to come from Ms. Wasley!

This is such a beautifully written book with perfectly crafted sentences that flow without conscious thought. From the very first chapter I was swept into Frankie's story. To me, she felt like a real person with both strengths and weaknesses. There were times when I admired her guts and determination, as well as times when she made mistakes which added to her vulnerability and ultimately gave her real dimension. I found her easy to identify with and an enjoyable character to read.

Throughout her journey she meets a whole range of new characters and while some of them receive less screen time than others, I was impressed by the depth of characterisation provided in a short period.

The plot also progressed nicely with twists and turns I truly didn't anticipate. Around the final quarter, I thought, Oh, I know what's going to happen, but I was actually completely wrong. The end left me disappointed it was over but satisfied with the conclusion and I'm looking forward to reading book two!

Wow! I just had to finish this book in one go! The book draws you in from the start, and doesn't let you go. The pace is good and the storyline is never predictable. Well crafted, vivid descriptions create an atmosphere full of suspense and mysticism.

One of Wasley's greatest strengths is character development. Just like in her other books, the characters in Downfall are consistent and believable. And in no way are the main characters idealised or infallible. There were certainly moments when I was exasperated with Frankie's reactions and decisions, but the author was right to let Frankie be the way she is. Frankie's apparent overreactions are consistent with her character, and eventually contribute to her growth. Aside from the mystical events in the book, this story is just as much about Frankie's coming of age. Frankie is left to find her own footing and pick her own path in life, even having to challenge some of her long held beliefs. I'm looking forward to seeing this development continue in the next book of this series!

Downfall by S.D Wasley

I love S.D Wasley's writing, it's so out of this world. A paranormal Author, how she thinks up her ideas it's just flabbergasting.

Downfall is her first book aimed at Adults. The other books she has written was aimed at young adults but at 37 years of age I loved them.

So what's Downfall about, I honestly couldn't put it into words, I'm confused, my mind is blow, but it's a grip you from the start kind of book you just can't put it down. Every chapter I was constantly saying I've got to read the next one I need to know where it's all going but at the end of the book I still haven't a clue.

I understand five of the characters, Cain, Jude, Owen, Liz and Nadine I know what they can see and how it helps, but Frankie I haven't the foggiest idea what she is all about, I think I do then my theory of her is squashed. I really can't wait for book two in March I need to know, so I can piece it all together.

Bit confusing reading back my review but I really can't go into it as 1 I'm confused and 2 the bits I could say would just spoil the story.

So if you like paranormal books that confuse you and blow your mind then this is a book for you.

S.D I really need book two. :-)

I was fortunate enough to have SD Wasley ask me to contribute some illustrations to DOWNFALL and of course I jumped at the chance.
One of the benefits of this is that I was lucky enough to read this excellent story in detail before it was available to everyone.
The story in DOWNFALL is thought provoking and interesting with characters that are easy to identify with and like but complex enough to wonder what is really going on with them all. They all seem to have their little mysteries and I can’t wait to find out more about them. Who are they and maybe even a bigger question WHY are they?
The story is both a mystery thriller and a paranormal romance that is at once quite grounded in the real world but with enough hints to push things into the ethereal.
I recommend this book to those that like their romance with some meat and their paranormal with a twist of mystery.

I tried liking this story, it was such a quick and easy read but that is all I found good about it. The main character is a horrible, spoiled person who doesn't care about anyone other than herself. Frankie is an 18 year old sheltered daughter of an evangelist. She is sent to live with her uncle and cousin in the small town she spent most of her childhood as she had failed her senior year of high school and her older sister (Vanessa) had a sordid affair with the tutor. Vanessa got pregnant and had to have an abortion. Their father was told and he sent them back to their town as this was scandalous. Frankie blames her sister for everything, and falls into self pity and misery. She doesn't even try and see how her sister is doing after such a tragic and hard thing to deal with (Vanessa's story would have been better to tell) She uses people to feel as if she is holier and better than them and treats people like utter rubbish. She has no real guidance and that possibly could be why she is such an annoying thoughtless person, but the people who try to help her (her older sister and cousin) she treats them like crap and then cries about it later to get them to forgive her. She meets up with an old friend who takes her to meet his friends in an underground abandoned place. Ahe falls instantly for thr leader of the group and starts to realize they are different. Her selfish and poor me actions sabotage the groups dynamics and they all go after her to salvage their group. It was one pity party after another. I just wanted to take her and shake some sense into her. Not my cup of tea

This was such a different story, for a while I had no idea where it was going, but I was interested to find out the secret of Cain and his friends. S.D Wasley has definitely come up with an intriguing premise, which I won't give away as it will spoil the intrigue of finding out. A great paranormal romance which had me reading till all hours to find out what was going to happen. I'm looking forward to reading book 2.

Hey, reader, come for a ride?
DOWNFALL, by S.D. Wasley, begins in the desperate dark of consequences, a rash decision that begs not only resolution but explaining. For those who accompany Frankie, the camera fades back in from the black to reveal the events leading up to her fateful ride. It’s a journey wrapped in several layers of secrets—not only her own, but also those of the people closest to her.
And so we meet Francesca—but that’s “Frankie,” to us, at least if we want to be her friend. She’s a bit of a disappointment to her father. The end of school did not go well for her, and she finds herself booted from his ongoing “tour” (promoting books that promise spiritual power to those seeking meaning or purpose in their lives), exiled back to her uncle’s house, and surrounded again by friends and acquaintances that belong to a past she had once thought she’d outgrown. Her mission: fix her academic situation, and prepare herself for college—even as she finds her place on her father’s tour supplanted by a trophy girlfriend who can be, rather generously, described as incompetent.
And yet, as the reader meets those people who populate Frankie’s exile, we can’t help but be more than a little happy for her, even as she doubts herself. The cast is both colorful and entertaining, and also—very typical in Wasley’s body of work—tinged with mystery. Foremost among these characters are her “hot former friend” Jude (who totally not over her), and the members of the “club” he regularly meets at Gaunt House … always at night, always descending into its recesses to hold their meetings in a most clandestine manner.
Enter “Cain,” the mysterious club leader with the striking, unforgettable face. Frankie doesn’t at first know if she likes him—she’s a little afraid of him—but she can’t get him out of her head. And, much as she tries, she simply cannot stay away.
Right now, you’re thinking “I know where this is going. Yep. Got it.” But you’re wrong. It isn’t going where you think—not even close.
The magic of Wasley’s writing is that she often pretends to lead you somewhere and then—either suddenly and without warning, or gradually, like watching a painting come together via time-lapse camera—you find yourself somewhere else entirely. This particular tale is both romantic and dramatic, and splashed (as ever) with the paranormal, but everything else about it defies basic genre limitations. It’s a unique story that proceeds at its own pace, largely character driven. The reader cares about the people in the story, and so the revelations come as they will, easing the story farther along as we come to understand the players in deep and satisfying ways. There you are, underground with Frankie and her friends—and you’re playing Monopoly or poker, snacking on chips and beer, and you suddenly understand something about them you never knew before—and you can’t even remember how many pages ago you learned it.
Wasley’s characters are generally defined by the way in which they attack the quest to realize their own potential and find their way in a world where they’re not sure if they belong. That’s true here, too. This time, the journey’s a bit more complex, more grown-up, than in some of her other stories. Still, fans of her work will find themselves right at home here, even as we learn the unexpected truth behind the Incorruptibles and share the experience of Frankie’s dark and magical downfall.

Thank you to author S.D. Wasley for providing me with an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Downfall is the first novel in S.D. Wasley’s new Incorruptibles series and is an intriguing look at those with special abilities that gives a new twist to those with seemingly divine gifts who protect those around them.

I have to be honest; Downfall is a really hard book for me to review. I really enjoy S.D. Wasley’s Seventh series and highly recommend it, but I found myself struggling with Downfall. While I thought the concept of the saints explored by Wasley was intriguing and fresh, I found it hard to connect with the main character or the romance within the story.

Downfall follows Frankie, the eighteen year old daughter of a big time evangelist who is sent to live with her cousin after there is a scandal involving her family during her dad’s latest book-tour. Though she misses the travelling she loves, Frankie begins to settle into the small town of Augers Well and soon finds herself invited into a unique circle of friends whose mysterious meetings see Frankie determined to uncover their secrets. It’s at these meetings that Frankie meets Cain a darkly handsome and alluring stranger who is more mysterious than all and who Frankie can’t help but begin to fall for…..

Downfall had a lot of potential, but ultimately fell flat. I think the biggest issue for me was that I didn’t like Frankie and I didn’t care for her relationship with Cain. Personally Frankie wasn’t endearing to me, and I found Cain a bit bland. I was intrigued by many of the other characters and what their visions meant on the whole, but not Frankie. The beautiful black and white depictions at the start of most chapters are a beautiful addition to the novel and give it a real something extra. As you read the story, the pictures coincide and match up with much of what’s going on and I give Wasley real props for including them.

Aside from my issues with Frankie I didn’t believe her and Cain’s romance. There was no build up, no expansion on the initial first attraction that normally develops into something deeper and meaningful. I felt like Frankie “fell for” and became obsessed over Cain too quickly and for no real reason. Though I understood the reason for their relationship, I didn’t understand Cain’s draw and in turn struggled to understand why Frankie became so entranced by him. At the end of the day I just didn’t feel it.

Though my review may indicate otherwise, there were aspects of the story I did like and I’m intrigued as to what Frankie’s role in everything is. If you enjoy mystery and paranormal however then Downfall may just be the perfect book for you!

S.D. Wasley’s Downfall is my first new adult paranormal read, and I found it to be quite good. For anyone who’s read Wasley’s YA series (Seventh), the situation of Downfall starts as a familiar one. A group of young people with supernatural gifts are brought together for an unknown purpose. I had a few Seventh moments while reading Downfall, but upon completion, the two are very different. This is not a rehash of Wasley’s first series at all.

The story focuses around Frankie, a girl who’s been “exiled” from her father’s book touring circuit in order to finish high school. She’s supposed to be putting her efforts toward classes, but a group of interesting people, headed by the mysterious and gorgeous Cain, grab her attentions with a vicious hold and won’t let go. Practically addicted to the group and her emotions for Cain, Frankie stops at nothing to find her place among this group, even if that place is nowhere at all.

Wasley brings to life a grand love and a mystery worth solving. I don’t usually go for the I-can’t-breathe-without-you romance, and I found myself wanting to throttle Frankie a few times for her poor decision making. This story offered me a twist, though, and by the end, I liked Frankie just fine. Cain also held some surprises for me, and the story itself didn’t answer all my questions. There’s no cliffhanger, but I’m left wondering about a few things that I’m hoping to learn more about in book two.

My favorite part of this book is the group. They remind me a bit of the kids in the Seventh, especially the way they discuss their “powers.” I like that this group doesn’t understand what they are or what they do. I like that they’re relying on one another to figure it out, and I like the potential I see in them to grow into something truly spectacular. Wasley hints at religious reasons for this group and then, just as quickly, retracts those hints. I spent the book riding along with the characters trying to figure them out, and that made for an excellent reading experience.

This is a very well-written book, the opening chapter is captivating, drawing the reader into the mystery from the first page. Frankie is dying, bleeding profusely from a wound to her shoulder, rescue seems unlikely, and her mind turns towards the six words which started it all. "Hey Frankie, come for a ride?"

Frankie's life is turned upside down when her father re-marries, and the new wife replaces her as her father's assistant. Then a family scandal results in her return to a small town to complete her studies. Life is fairly boring, even the parties, so when her childhood play-mate Jude offers to take her to meet some friiends, of course Frankie goes for a ride.

Jude's friends seem pleasant enough, but Frankie can't help thinking that all is not as it seems. They seem to be hiding something, particularly the mysterious and very handsome Cain, and she is determined to discover their secrets.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review, and I liked it, (Ms Wasley is a skilled writer, and I recommend her first book, "The Seventh") but I can't help thinking that I am not the target market. Whilst it may not be strictly YA, I think it will appeal more to readers in Frankie's age group (18) who may relate more to her teen angst. Instead of commiserating with her, I found her to be somewhat petulant and immature, and occasionally irritating. As the story is narrated by Frankie, the other characters are also not as well-developed as I would have liked. However, there is to be a sequel, and hopefully this will allow some of the secondary characters to come to the fore. I look forward to reading it.

I was extremely lucky to receive and advanced copy of this book.

Six words, “Hey Frankie, come for a ride?” That was all it took in the very first chapter, Omen, to get me completely and totally hooked on this book. Those six words started my sleepless night and I ended up with the biggest book hangover. Yes, it was that intriguing. From the very beginning SD had me wondering what the heck was going on. I tried desperately to figure it out but every time I thought I had it, SD threw me a curve ball. Her characters are well developed, her descriptions are so detailed you can actually see each scene unfold in your mind and when secrets are finally revealed it’s an “oh wow” moment.

There are several pieces of art work in the book that are truly stunning.

By the time I reached the last chapter, Amen, I was totally addicted to this series and was very grateful the next installment would be out in March 2016.

Words fail to do justice to how much I loved this book. From the first line of the prologue I was hooked. Downfall has some intriguing characters I can't wait to see develop as the series continues.

If you're a fan of paranormal/mystery/romance/good reads you need to check this out when it is available on 7 January. I had to physically make myself make this more than one sitting.

If you can't wait that long the author's other books The Seventh and The Rift are already available.

I sat down at 10 am on a Saturday morning to start this book. 1:32am Sunday morning I am finished reading. The idea and concept that saints could be everyday people amongst us made a spellbinding story. The author does a beautiful job making the story come to life in your mind as you read. I look forward to reading the series as it comes out.

Loved It!

Such a new story! I have not read anything like thus and it was amazing and a thrill ride. I could not put it down! The love story, the suspense, the characters, all impressive and interesting. The plot was fantastical and kept you engaged until the very end and has you wondering what is next to come! So excited to get my hands on Book 2.

This was ok. I wish there was more of how Cain and Frankie were in love- did they just each other at the house? Just being drawn to another person and being obsessed dust equal love.
I really liked the premise of the story overall. I'm undecided on to continue to the next books.

Poorly executed writing.
For a first person present tense writing, it does little for the reader to feel intensity or emotion. Perhaps if it's written with feeling instead of ~telling~ a story, and more as if the character was real (or 'me'), it would have more impact.
But the MC is so bland, whiny, and transparent, first character just wouldn't do at all.
This is one of the few times, 1 star is sufficient and deserving.

Downfall is the first book in an amazing series by S.D. Wasley. Set in a small agricultural town in Australia it begins the story of the daughter of an evangelist author and her more than "normal" group of friends. Part love story, part paranormal thriller, part coming of age tale, it's a superbly crafted story that offers something new on every page and manages to avoid all of those sudden lags that sometimes have you flipping forward to see if you're getting close to the end of the story yet.
Frankie Carvaggio is a refreshingly original heroine who finds herself living with a cousin after being dismissed as a PA by her father so she can finish her last year of school. She's feeling a bit resentful at missing out on the travel experiences connected with his tour and a bit insecure after having been replaced by his blond and ditzy new wife, but unlike the heroines of so many YA stories these days, she is not fundamentally broken. Her experiences in Augers Well will test her metal and force her to grow up far more quickly than she might have done while she was on tour with dear old Dad, but the young woman she becomes is strong, self-assured and confident of her place in her world.
Downfall is the first book in a series, but it is a complete story in and of itself with no convenient cliff hangers at the end to force you to rush out to buy the next volume to find out exactly how our heroes get down off that cliff. Having said that, I loved Frankie and Cain, Jude and Albion, Owen and the rest of the Gaunt House gang and I'm anxious to pick up the next installment in their adventures to find out what becomes of them all.
I think you'll feel the same way.

I received this ARC book in exchange for an honest review.

**THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**

This is the 3rd book of S.D. Wasley's and it has just left me wanting more. The way it is written captivates the reader the world of fantasy surpasses that of reality.

The opening chapter is well thought out and well written. It starts with the main character bleeding from a wound and it has you believing she might die. Of course the only way to go is to read the rest of the book.

Frankie is a disgruntled 18 year old, disgruntled because after the best part of 3 years she has been touring with her famous author dad. After her and her sisters private tutor proves below par and inappropriate the girls are returned home. Frankie has to go back to school.

At a party Frankie bumps I to old school friend Jude who introduces her to his friends. His friends are hiding a secret which riles Frankie immensely to the point she starts demanding answers. When she gets to the story behind the secret she is obsessed with getting more answers but seems unprepared to see anyone else's spin on why she is drawn to this group of friends. I have to admit I wanted to tell her to shut up and grow up.

We follow the group of friends through their journey of working out a complex weave of visionary puzzles.

A thoroughly great read, you won't want to put it down.

Downfall is the first book by S.D. Wasley I have read. She is a very talented writer whose storyline grabs you from the start and keeps you involved with her characters as they unfold and keeps you riveted to their stories.

Frankie has been working as her father's PA for three years on his book tours. After an unfortunate mistake by her sister, they are both sent back home to continue their schooling. Frankie goes to live at her uncle's and share a house with her cousin, Alby. He tries to reintroduce her to old friends and Jude, a friend since kindergarten, is glad she has come back. He takes her to meet some of his newer friends where she meets Cain. Cain is beautiful and she can't get a handle on why he is so different or on her feelings for him.

There are four in this group and they meet in a sub basement of an abandoned poor house. Frankie is drawn to them, not understanding why. As she is excepted, they start to reveal more of themselves in front of her. She must decide if she is an asset to them or a determent, especially to Cain.

This story dwells into the realms of saints and the good or bad they may do for mankind. It has a paranormal side along with a romantic triangle which is very well written from the views of a young adult. I would recommend this book to all.

I received Downfall as an ARC (advance reader's copy) book from the author. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.

Personally, this rated as a 3.5 for me because I absolutely couldn't stand the main female character. But, the storyline was good, and the pacing was steady after the 30 percent mark where the book began to make more sense, because the plot began to unfold. To that point, it was a slow read and I wondered what the point of the story would be. I decided to round-up my rating because, after reflection, I thought other readers may appreciate the very traits I found annoying. Where I felt Frankie was snoopy and intrusive, other readers could interpret her as inquisitive and concerned. While I don't understand what the Cain and Frankie saw in each other, maybe another reader will see love at first sight.

The writing was good and the concept for the plot was fresh and well thought out-- so, while this wasn't a good book for me, I feel other readers would enjoy it.

'Downfall' is SD Wasley's first adult book. I like the classification as 'new adult' as the story line and the content was definitely more mature than that of a 'young adult' book, but the story still has the same magic found in Ms Wasley's previous books.

Frankie is going through a life change. New place, new life, new people and reconnecting with people she knew when she was younger.

Then Frankie meets an intriguing new set of friends, including one very special boy.

'Downfall' has lots of twists and turns, and every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was surprised. I am very much looking forward to the next book being released.

I would especially recommend this series to fans of 'Twilight', those adults who enjoy young adult fiction, and anyone who wants an easy to read novel that is hard to put down.

I received this book free from one of the book subscription emails.
I really wanted to like this book. It started out with some action which compelled this reader forward, but I soon had to stop because it became obvious that one of the character's goal was to get the main character to "loosen up" to the point of under age drunkenness and losing her virginity. Being frustrated with this character being a major character and a likeable one at that, I couldn't finish. I just don't agree that "loosening" up must entail a loss of morals. I don't agree with sex before marriage period, but this instance just hit me hard, possibly because of the source, the circumstances the advice came in and how early the subject came up in the book.

I was emailed an e book copy of this book and was so happy I was. The author captures you right off from the first page to the last. It is an amazing read and perfect for those of us who believe that not everything can be explained by science or knowledge in this world. It captures the feeling of the unknown and keeps you on edge till the very end. The struggles of being different in this ever changing world of ours, it is a must read for those who love the paranormal, dramatic, and a bit of romance thrown in amongst one girls journey to help others find their true potential. I love Ms Wasley's haunting style. Given the mystical nature of this paranormal romance, it fits the story perfectly.
The underground chamber in a ruined house sounds like one of those places you see in your childhood that haunts your dreams forever - and yet this one houses secrets I'd never expected.
When Frankie falls in love, but there's far more at stake than her untouched heart. Oh, it's so hard not to give spoilers for this book, but I'll do my best to resist!
From an explosive beginning, through a well-paced unveiling of characters and secrets, all the way up to...whose downfall? You'll have to read it to find out ;)

Five stars.

This book was given me by Rebecca Hamilton in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A beautifully created and written story the script is fluid and to the point all the way through. It's exciting as well as very interesting and although there is an undertone of religion in the story line it's not oppressive enough to spoil your enjoyment if religion isn't in your genre. That said I found it one of the better books I've read this year and highly recommend it for it's qualities

At first, I had trouble getting caught up in the story. But, the writing was excellent & I found myself not wanting to put it down! The mystery of what the group was all about, what was going on at their gatherings, and why Frankie was accepted kept me intrigued. I admit that Frankie was often annoy & whiney, but she is a teenage girl falling in love for the first time, so I can overlook that! All in all, very good read & I can't wait to continue the series!

I was pulled in from the beginning. And, I almost deducted my rating because the ending was drawn out and not nearly as exciting as the whole story. But, since I finished in one sitting, I'd say it deserves the higher rating.
So much was new, foreign to me. I couldn't predict. I ached with Frankie. It read like a stand alone. Just out of my element enough I suppose to capture my imagination.
