Design for a Human Scale (c) 1983 is a follow up to Victor Papanek's earlier book, "Design for the Real World." He explains it's purpose early on in the book this way:
"The point of 'Design for the Real World ' can be summed up as: What to design and why.
'Design for Human Scale' carres this question to its next logical step. After deciding on _what_ and _why_, the next question in _how_? That is the central question here. How can people be built into the design process? How can designs and people be brought together?"
Victor's two books remind me very much of the set that Christopher Alexander wrote about the "Timeless Way of Building." Both series use specific examples, but the specific in this case can be expanded to metaphor to include concepts in other disciplines such as Information Architecture, Social Networking, urban planning, History, and so forth. They are well worth keeping on one's book shelves for reference and inspiration.
