Either Kate's love was worth nothing to Thomas... or maybe it was worth everything. Maybe it was worth enough to commit murder. Pictures don't lie, even when they accuse a loving, devoted husband of murder. Thomas was a brilliant detective, but his last case was never solved because it ended with his disappearance. The reason now seems clear, but Kate won't believe it. She can't. And she'll prove his innocence, no matter what the cost. Corruption and deceit cloud her way, but in the middle of it, she finds the most unlikely person - a homeless boy who clings to her like the child she and Thomas never had. Perhaps she and the boy can survive the truth together. Maybe they can mend the tatters of one another's hearts.
Difficult to read, every page had a dark cloud over it. Depressing, confusing, farfetched story. Kept reading hoping to get into the story. Two bright spots in the story was rescuing the almost dead kitten and her relationship with the young boy. Don't waste your time, like I did.
This book would have earned another star had it not been so convoluted early on and some other unnecessary weights on the plot line. One scene borrowed from an eighties movie and a somewhat contrived ending were only two of the reasons it did not rate higher.
This book was interesting but I am left with more questions. The author wrote a lot of useless info into it rather than thoroughly explaining the main point of the story.
I really liked the premise of this book. I read other reviews in which readers were confused by the switching of past to present in the story. Although I think that could've been handled better (maybe through point of view?), that didn't bother me so much. I do feel there was way too much going on in the book. It was as if the author had all these great ideas and tried to cram them all in, but none of them got the treatment they deserved. Multiple books could've been written instead of cramming it all into this one. Without spoiling the ending, I will say I felt very let down and disappointed at the resolution of the mystery. Had that been different, it would have upped my rating to 4 stars.
Lots of unanswered questions in this psychological serial killer/conspiracy thriller with some possible supernatural overtones. No explanation for the findings (or lack of findings) at the crime scenes. No explanation for the predictions, or the visions. However, I am still curious enough to look for the author's next book in this series.
The book was OK, I think. I couldn't keep up with the clues or how Kate solved them or even how the events had progressed as far as they had. It all started from a rape years before, but why there were so many deaths to follow.
This is an odd story.....he seems to try and pack so much into it, which makes it pretty baffling in places. However, I stuck with it and did like it BUT I wasn't impressed by the amount of mistakes throughout. Some are more irritating because at times he got it right and then at other times messed it up. I was especially annoyed near the end, at a really crucial, exciting part that I had to stop and mark 2 more apostrophe mistakes !! It messes up the whole reading experience so annoyed me a lot. It has you wondering throughout whether Thomas was as good as Kate believed he'd been. I liked young Gabe she encountered in her investigation to learn the truth. The story itself opened with a really baffling passage to me: "Kate lay partially awake, the bed sheets distressed around her. The mattress cradled her and the blanket hugged warmly, but her body ached, balled tightly in the fetal position. Was it merely the touch of skin, something to trick herself into thinking she wasn't sleeping alone ?"........I almost packed it in there as, however many times I read it, it made no sense to me. At one point she was in her car, then Maurice's car then her own and back to Maurice's.......which wasn't right but WAS careless. Another real irritation was the oft-repeated mention of a door facing.....I've never heard this term before and I am guessing it probably merits a hyphen as a rule as I kept thinking "facing what" then realising !! He spelt border as boarder, khakis as kakis, detach-ment doesn't need a hyphen, fluorescent he writes as florescent but gets it right later, eerie written as erie, drown and not drowned.....a bit sloppy. There were many apostrophe errors yet, as I stated, he knows the difference and gets them right as many times !! A few sentences had missed words......I made a note at one point that the story was confusing enough without needing to play find-the-effing-missing-word-games !! Even the final page had a mistake....."laughing the night with Kate's parents" maybe lost in ??? There were some funny remarks in it and also some very touching moments.....however, his next story needs to be way better presented !!
The general storyline and characters were great, but it was almost like reading 2 different books. The first half had different points of view and flashbacks. Now I don't normally like flashbacks but these were well written and integral to the storyline so it worked. Then there was this climax of events in the middle that made it seem like you were near the end. The second half of the book reads much differently, no flashbacks or different points of view and a little too much of the main character wondering if she can handle the situation. It was a definite page turner toward the end, although the plot and the killers MO were a little muddy and hard to understand because of all the moving parts, I think I understood the basics. There are some things that could have been clearer and smoothed out but overall it was a really enjoyable story. I am interested in reading the next book in the series. Personally I think Rick should be a returning character, after all every PI needs a shady guy with questionable morals and a heart of gold they can turn to.
Kate. a licensed PI, mourned the loss of her detective husband Thomas - was his death murder or suicide? His last case showed him the corruption in the police around him. Thomas was incorruptible. Murders with no evidence left behind. Kate connects with Rook/Gabe while she is investigating her husband's case. Gabe is a streetwise, homeless boy who helps Kate avoid the 'bad guys' and later awakens her maternal instincts. Kate's investigation uncovers sick and depraved persons in whose twisted minds the senseless murders make sense. Their reasoning is so perverted that it makes for improbable events, escapes, and resolutions. A very unsatisfying story that this reader kept hoping would end much sooner than it did.
Confusing, unbelievable, weak characters with no redeeming qualities. She's a PI with cases she never pursues. Her dead husband made sure she had the opportunity to investigate his death but she's too wishy/washy and doesn't pursue it. She's being framed for some unknown reason. People are being murdered but no one seems concerned. The boy is "brilliant" and "scary smart" but nothing backs up these statements. The boy and her meet midway through the book, do not seem to have any connection but they are suddenly devoted to each other. The story is jumpy and scattered. Characters are under & poorly developed.
In the Medford PD they were an inner circle, of which Thomas was not. They didn’t go with what his abilities and work ethnics were, he was just someone who transferred in. Member of the town council committed suicide, his wife thinks differently. She asked Thomas to come to her home, She had search for an officer she could put her trust in. When his boss finds out why he was late for work, and guess who he had been talking, was livid. What did he uncovered that made him disappear, or even worse dead. Kate has moved on until a safe with his old case files in it. I found it intriguing case, and enjoyed reading.
Kept my interest, but redundant situations. Just overwritten (not like Anne Rice and her descriptions, but chapters that seemed too similar to each other). Characterization not a strong suit.
BUT I want to say that there will still several good scenes. In total, it was a decent mystery, though threads were left hanging. And it was a free e-book from Kindle and not a waste of time, though a tighter narrative might have improved the flow.
Daniel Foster was able to go back and forth with the timeline very effectively, it was almost as though I was reading a movie script. Excellent descriptions of his characters without going overboard. He also used his characters to have interesting thoughts about God, letter of the law vs reality of living a lawful existence.
I found this book too confusing for me to keep up with. The time of the action kept jumping back and forth and I couldn't keep up. I did care about Kate, Thomas, and Gabe, but they were the only ones I felt anything positive about. I don't like reading about so many corrupt cops in one book. I don't like serial murders. If your tastes are different, you may enjoy this book more than I did.
This is the first story I have read by this author and I was delighted when I ran felt like it was a story worth reading a lot of twists and turns and also a lot of compassion that was unexpected great job and look forward to more of his work
It took awhile for me to get into the rhythm of the book. The back and forth between present and past was perfect. True love and commitment kept Thomas and Kate going forward.
A bit of darkness, a bit of faith, a lot of self-serving crooks & cops, a heroine that loses much & gains peace in the end. Fast paced good read that doesn't rely on sexual involvement as a substitute for a good story. Refreshing!
Give 3.5 found my interest wandering when seemed like paragraphs repeating the same messages. Interesting Thoughts about the plant's abilities. Didn't care for the skipping around with the time thing.
This was an excellent book! It was an unusual mystery with a FEW side steps. It kept me very interested to find out who dunit and why? And you say there will be a next book? GREAT!
One to Five is the trajectory (in stars) this book followed. I put the book down twice with no intention of finishing it. I picked it up three times!!! There were twists and turns that I don't know how got straightened out.
I rarely write reviews but couldn't let this one slip by. So many plot twists and turns really kept me enthralled until the end. And just a little teaser- halfway through when it all seems sewn up is when the real excitement begins!
It's well written, although the plot goes back and forth in time and is quite ( cleverly ) complicated. Many of the characters are hardly credible, or they would be in the UK anyway!
At about 25% through I was confused. The time jumps so much that I struggled to keep track with what what happening now, 3 days ago or 2 years ago! I managed to 50% but then things got convoluted and it was very hard to follow. There were lots of loose ends and storylines that came out of nowhere.
This is not my usual genre. But wow! It was hard to put down. Hold on, it’s hard to catch my breath after the exciting ending. Ok. Anyway, you should read this book. Few editorial mistakes, no sex. Eff word is used several times. Some animal abuse.
