A sweet story about a widower trying to learn to cook for his little daughter. The food sounds super tasty! I want somebody to cook for me. :(

I was hoping this was going to be similar Yotsuba&! as a single father and his daughter bond while learning to cook. While it is slice of life and has some warm and fuzzy daddy/daughter moments, this actually seems to be another of those yucky teacher/student romances that seem so common in manga. The widowed teacher is learning to cook for his daughter with a girl he randomly meets in a park but who turns out to be in his high school classroom. The teenage girl is lonely and has an absent mother who doesn't seem to know or care about the time her daughter is spending in this older man's home.
It's very slow and will probably get creepier as it progresses, but I have a couple more volumes on hand from the library, so I'll see how it goes.

"Amaama" to Inazuma" or "Sweetness and Lightning" is a story of a young widower who wants to give a better life to his young daughter, even if it's as simple as a warm, homecooked meal.
The first volume has the indicators of this being a cute and sweet series, but be wary of the young daughter who can give you an emotional sucker punch to the feels.

This manga is getting an anime, so I thought I would check it out if the story (and the characters) were any good before the anime is starting.
And it was quite good, a bit boring, a bit bland, but still fun. Though I do worry about which route the story will be taking. What is the worry? In the beginning Kotori is just a friend, a student of our MC, but as the story progresses you see that change, at least for Kotori. And I am worried how this will end. The MC is a teacher, she is his student, I wouldn't want to have a romance in this manga, it would complicate the easy-going story with unnecessary problems.
I was also a bit worried about the kid, I have read several manga with kids and often I am just annoyed to death because the kids just don't seem to get basic manners, or they are just plain annoying.
Thankfully Tsumugi is a sweet kid who cares a lot about her father, she misses her mother (which just pulls my heartstrings so much whenever she says the word Mommy). She also loves food, and it was just so much fun to see her enjoy her (and also Kotori's) food.
This book is a bit like Usagi Drop (though without all the drama) and one of those food anime (like Koufuku Graffiti). The focus switches between caring for Tsumugi and making lots of delicious looking foods. The chapters end with a recipe, which is so much fun as this way you can participate/make your own food as well.
The art is really gorgeous, I just love all the details, I love how the characters are drawn, and then that food. Dayum. <3
I am not sure if I will continue the manga, but I will certainly check out the anime. I can't wait to see this animated. Hopefully they will do it right.

3.5/5 I got the first volume of Sweetness & Lightning out of a LootCrate. It sat on my shelf for years. Looking for some toilet reading I grabbed it recently dusted it off.
The lead is a widower and single father who has been feeding his daughter instant meals and take out since his wife passed away until meeting a teenage student from the school he teaches at. The student, a high school girl, is also lonely because her mother is working all of the time and she's home alone all the time. The trio have a chance meeting and start cooking together.
The story is a nice slice of life manga with a lot of heart warming laughs. I enjoyed it well enough but I'm not sure I would see it through to the end, twelve volumes later. However if you're looking for some sweet easy reading you could do worse. I think I would prefer a little heavier drama personally; though I probably haven't given it enough of a shot yet to make much of a judgement.

I didn't really know what to expect going into this manga. It's a cute story about a widower single father learning to cook for his daughter. The meals sound very tasty and I've definitely jotted down a couple recipes to try for myself.
It's a little one note but here's hoping future volumes have a little more depth to them!

This was an overall sweet and warm story about a widower learning to cook for his daughter. It’s a feel good story to see the widower and a student from his school become less alone and are finding themselves again. All of the characters were great and loved seeing the perspectives of the family and student. They were easy to connect with and were all very likable. Overall, this was a very enjoyable story and look forward to reading more of the books in the series.

Another manga that's secretly a recipe/food manga. The father and daughter are affable enough, even if the father feels like an empty, everyman protagonist. Tsumugi is cute.
The story's true focus is on the heroine Kotori. She's one of the dad's students, and through circumstances, Kotori ends up helping to take care of Tsumugi through cooking. I'm not too sure what to make of Kotori. Her mother is never around, but it seems like she's just busy rather than grossly neglectful. Kotori seems constantly lonely, but in the last chapter, we meet one of her friends, who's just been conveniently absent all this time.
I just dunno how I'd feel if it turns out to be a story about a teacher who has a relationship with one of his students.
I wonder what the title means. At first, I thought it'd be a pun on the protagonists' names, but Iida to Inazuma (thunder) is kind of a stretch. I know Tsumugi means "to weave". It's an enjoyable slice of life story so far.

I'm a big FOODIE! This manga was 100% my jam.

A single dad is just trying to make the best of his life with his little girl. He may not be the best cook, but he's willing to learn and that's all that matters. He starts a friendship with on of his students and don't worry, it's very wholesome! I'm a mom, so I was treading lightly too.
The manga is mostly filled with cooking and recipes, so I can see how if you aren't a foodie or cook like myself it might not be your jam, but I love it. I shop at the Asian grocery store weekly, so all of the ingredients mentioned are easily obtainable. I also love tweaking recipes so it doesn't always have to be right. I will admit, I had to google several items, but once you understand what everything is, it's fairly simple.
Glad, I randomly picked this up at my local library! It was purely based on the cover.

A cute story of a single father trying to raise his kid while one of his students asks him for help cooking. So basically it's a cooking slice of life drama. It's cute, fun, and the characters are all well done. My main issue is how long can we go with this plotline? Every chapter is basically just a cooking lesson with some drama here or there. Also, the girl seems to like the teacher, which can turn into something weird. I might check out more later but for now I'ma give this a 3 out of 5.

He's pretty bad at cooking and doesn't have a huge appetite to begin with, but chance brings his little family and one of his students, Kotori Iida, together for homemade adventures. With those three cooks in the kitchen, it's no wonder this dinner table drama is so delicious.
I really love slice-of-life manga, especially those that tend toward humor and revolve around food. This was such an unexpected delight. I’m currently hopeful about the story arc, but I’ve been burned before, so let’s say I’m being reasonable.
Sweetness & Lightning is a seinen, slice-of-life series about a recently widowed father and his young daughter. In his struggle to feed her well, he meets a student of his at her family's restaurant and they begin an adventure of learning how to cook. It's sweet, having moments of humor and heartache. The picture below features a conversation the junior math teacher has with his student about making breakfast, since they aren't really supposed to meet up outside school, they have this conversation back-to-back by an open window.
So much appeals to me about this. Young widower wants to take care of his daughter, and when the opportunity presents itself to eat at a Homestyle restaurant he jumps. Then it seems he is on the verge of impropriety, spending time with a student, both of them learning how to cook, almost as equals, but he makes a decisions that not only help his daughter, but begins healing himself.
We don't really spend time on his grief, but the death of his wife is recent and I think it's already becoming a new normal for him. Her death was probably not sudden, but this first volume doesn’t go into it.
I almost want to be annoyed at the fact that the girl started developing a crush on her teacher halfway through the book, only a few months or a few chapters into their relationship as cooking adepts, but I’m hopeful about how this play out. We’ll see.

Phew, this book is so sweet it’s likely to give you cavities (though fortunately not so lightning it will cause your pacemaker to explode). Single parent with shockingly (oops) adorable young daughter (seriously, Tsumugi is a really great child character) finds himself cooking with a young girl whose mother is a minor celebrity who is never around.
It’s got a lot of great cooking scenes throughout - this is a cooking manga through and through, except nobody knows how yet and they come together as they learn. There are also a pile of great character beats and good art and it’s all very heartwarming.
Right now there is only the vaguest whiff of romance in the air, though it’s very much kept (for now) to a potential schoolgirl crush. Since Inuzuka himself doesn’t appear at all interested and he’s a teacher at the teenage girl’s school, that’s really okay with me (I’m not saying the story can’t pull it off, but that is a very difficult needle to thread, narratively speaking).
Despite a heartwarming denouement, I didn’t love the picnic chapter either - you can tell where it’s going from the first beat and it gets a bizarre assist from what can only be described as deus ex cumulonimbus. Still, it’s only one minor knock against a very solid work.
Even the little touches are really charming - I love how Iida, the teenager, is constantly eating at school for some reason - it reinforces how much of this story revolves around the joy of eating (you could also argue that given how bored and perfunctory the act looks for her compared to her joy at cooking with Inuzaka that it also emphasizes how food is at its best when it brings people together).
This whole thing has a big heart and if you’re a sucker for stories about finding a family that you’re not related to by blood, like I am, this is a really strong start for a series.

Finished reading: 4/5⭐ | Vol 1-12
This is one of the manga with a very warm and cozy feels within. And definitely screaming food-porn.
I finished reading all of the volumes in one weekend because it's very comfortable to read. So comfortable that I don't wanna stop reading. I will live in the story if I could.
And I love how characters in Amaama to Inazuma are actually growing up and getting older. We start with a widower in his late 20s with his daughter (named Tsumugi) age around 3 or 4 years old and by the end of the story, we catch a glimpse of their future life when the child is about junior or senior high school age. I just love the kind of story with aging characters!
As for the plot itself, it's slice-of-life through and through. It basically just tells about their daily life, what food they cook and eats, and the menial problems they face day by day. That's why it's good because it's such an easy reads.
But the best part of course is Tsumugi's antics and the food, aaaah the food! They even come up with the complete recipes that we actually can copy to cook at home.
Amaama to Inazuma also has been adapted as an anime. That's how I know Tsumugi is so cute because her voice and speaking manner in the anime is super adorable.
I'm actually really sad when I read the last volume. Do you know the feeling of familiarity towards a fiction character that ends up giving you massive separation anxiety? Yeah, that's the one.
So, all in all... if you feel like needed a reading that feels like a warm bowl of homemade chicken soup, read this manga. You'll love it very much.

In this very different manga, we follow Kouhei Inuzuka who is a widowed teacher and father with a amateur knack for cooking. Aside from his work, he is trying his best to raise his adorably energetic daughter Tsumugu all by himself. He suddenly starts to having a growing friendship with shy Kotori, one of his students who happens to be a restaurant chef, and the three together will cook up some delicious meals and nice moments of friendship.
It’s such a charming feel-good story that I haven’t read from other manga in ages. From start to finish, I was swept away by S&L’s cozy tone and Tsumugu will win you over just like Anya from “Spy X Family”. I can wait to see what “S&L” will cook up next. A (100%/Outstanding)

It was cute! Not a lot happens in this volume but it’s sweet how the characters are helping each other in the way of learning to cook meals. I’m not sure I’ll continue this series at the moment. But if I do, I’ll probably do so digitally. There are just WAY TOO MANY other series I’d like to read first.

He's a teacher and his experiences with cooking are limited, so when he comes across one of his high school students who manages to make food that his little daughter likes, it seems like a godsend. but I'm sensing it might develop to become a teacher\student love story?

This is a manga series I've been wanting to try for a year or so, now. It's a cute day-in-the-life series about a widowed father who wants to do better raising his daughter by learning how to make more home-cooked meals for her. Loving father and cute little girl? That's all I needed to want to read this.
The fun surprise I got upon actually reading this is that each chapter he's learning how to make a new different recipe, and the manga INCLUDES THE REAL RECIPE at the end of each chapter, with helpful tips and tricks. I've already learned a thing or two.

This was a "cute" book about a father and his young daughter who love food. They meet a girl who also likes to cook and is afraid of knives. Sadly, this book was a little bit too much about food, which sure sounds odd coming from me, but it was just a bit too one note.

This is really sweet and the little girl is adorable and cute. The father is a recent widower and has started to learn to cook instead of buying Bento boxes for every meal for his daughter. The man is a teacher and he meets a student of his whose mother owns a restaurant. Kotori is always alone because her mother is a celebrity chef and always away, she and the teacher join forces in learning to cook. A really sweet story as I said and each chapter ends with the recipe of one item they made that chapter. I'm just a little uneasy as to how the relationship between the teacher and student will develop. She could possibly look to him as a father figure (I hope) but the ending suggests she might be having inappropriate feelings towards her teacher. I hope the story doesn't go that route. We'll see.
