"New York Times" bestselling author and expert in epidemiology Dr. Michael Savage explains the origins of viruses and their impact on the U.S. With new and resurgent diseases resulting from unregulated immigration and a politicized public health system, Michael Savage sees the need for some changes - starting with the President and the Center for Disease Control telling us the truth. Savage makes his case for the government to enforce travel bans, the use of quarantines and the importance of proper border screenings. However, this is not a cure or treatment for any of these diseases. With Zika virus, tuberculosis, hepatitis, Enterovirus 68 and other new disease threats emerging across the U.S., Savage will explain ways to fortify your immune system and defend against these and other diseases. Drawing from his extensive training, Dr. Savage examines the benefits of using specific nutrients to boost the human immune system which, in turn, increases the odds of surviving a viral infection as well as preventing other diseases. Based on his knowledge of the politics of medicine being played by the Obama mandarins and his Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Nutrition from the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Savage presents solid information to protect your health. Whether you want to defend your body against deadly diseases, boost your immunity, or learn more about the government's impact on reemerging and imported diseases, DISEASES WITHOUT BORDERS is your source for informative, helpful, and potentially life-saving advice.
Dr. Michael Savage is a multimedia icon in the conservative movement. The Telegraph in the U.K. ranked him as one of the most influential conservatives in the United States, and with 10 million weekly listeners, the Berkeley Ph.D. is the third most listened to conservative talk show host. Recently featured in The New Yorker and Playboy, Dr. Savage is the author of many books, including the political thriller Abuse of Power and four New York Times bestsellers. His media presence and profile earned him the coveted Freedom of Speech Award from Talkers magazine in 2007.

Dr. Savage holds a master's degree in medical botany and a second in medical anthropology. Additionally, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in epidemiology and nutrition sciences. He is an ardent conservationist, is dedicated to his family, and is a proud patriot of his country.
This book is so offensive in the first two chapters, that it's basically unreadable propaganda. However, I read it anyway and tried to focus on the actual epidemiology information and ignore the horrific anti-humanitarian political commentary. I think he's right that we need to have proper medical treatment and vaccination expectations for immigrants. But people who can afford plane flights can also carry tuberculosis and other infectious diseases and in fact, they are the ones who imported Covid to the US and the world.
He's also wrong that parents should choose on their own whether to vaccinate for things like measles. Obviously, we don't vaccinate for everything precisely because scientists apply a cost-benefit analysis for the public at large. For example, that's why our dogs are vaccinated for rabies but our children aren't. The cost exceeds the benefit. But he misapplies this to measles that again, can easily be brought in by a person wealthy enough to come to the US on vacation. And because it's highly transmissible, would quickly affect a large group of people.
After that, he goes through a bunch of vitamins and minerals and what they do for the body and immune system. While this is interesting it's also information that's readily available on wikipedia. It's hardly enlightening expertise.
I wonder if Savage stands by his quarantine position now that it's not conservative ideology to quarantine in an outbreak. That would prove his sincerity if not his accuracy.
Honestly, this isn't very "epidemiological," this is hateful name-calling opinion devoid even of political logic. I recommend books by Michael Osterholm or Laurie Garrett if you want science and epidemiology.
A dunce and downright xenophobic loser. He is an anti-vaxxer. Please do not read into his rhetoric, if you are easily swayed by anti-immigration sentiment, please avoid. I read about 10 pages (I will finish it) after this review, but seeing conservative next to his name, did not surprise. He might have a Ph.D but it appears he is just using that salvage some credibility from his disgusting outlook. What is disconcerting is the fact that he is 'educated' and he is not showing the full picture. It is a pure exercise in disingenuousness, if he elaborated into the full plethora of epidemiological explanations, it might be been a more enlightened read. 'I'm an epidemiologist', he says, that's what makes it more sad, he is deliberately overlooking certain aspects of his trade that he knows full well, in order to brandish Obama and provide 'proof' for his lies. He overlooks general comparisons between the average health and wellbeing of an average American compared to these immigrants and he overlooks disease mutation. He knows he should tell you about this, but chooses not to.
He blames illegal immigration for the spread of diseases and fair enough, however, if a government is letting them in, then they are not illegal. Complaining that bringing children is spreading disease and Obama was releasing these kids on unsuspecting communities, ok, maybe there should have been better policy regarding vaccinations and screening of these children, he could have said that, no he didn't he just wanted to close the borders. He attacks the transparency of those running migrant camps, as a humanitarian who has worked in these camps, yes scabies, TB and measles and sometimes we can not report on them because then we lose access to the displaced peoples and their conditions get worse. That is our job is to give them access to first line health care, it is up to the politics whether they deliberately do not let you, just a evangelist anti-immigrationist in there to witness someone with scabies. They should not be denying these people health care so that you can see scabies.
Why you should read this as satirical and as evidence of extreme right wing: 1. He uses Fox News as a credible source. 2. He literally says 'Barack Insane Obama'. 3. He quotes germ theory, claiming Obama does not know what it is, but then fails to acknowledge herd immunity. 4. He blames outbreaks of diseases on immigrants rather than effectiveness of the vaccines, for example, he talks about Measles vaccines giving 'only' 97% immunity rather than the processes in which they are integrated into society. 5. He reaches out to mothers saying 'what if you find scabies and lice infested in your childrens hair'. Well, that was all part of growing up, getting a flu, getting lice and this was before those 'disgusting immigrants'.
I was hoping to use this book as something to draw evidence from for my own research, but unfortunately, it is just a giant piece of shit.
This book is shelved for now, although as a clincal microbiologist/infection control specialist prior retirement, I love books about diseases. However, blaming President Obama's open-border policy for bringing diseases into America in the introduction of the book did not exactly vet for the author's objectiveness in his opinions, regardless of a phD in epidemiology from UC Berkeley, which was also mentioned in the introduction. It's a known fact that the world is flat now. Americans, as well as the rest of the world, are all global citizens. Diseases are in the nature, blaming unvaccinated immigrants while, in fact, some Asian and Latin American countries have the best vaccination and disease tracking methods, is extremely biased. One day I might get back to the book, ignoring the author's extreme personal bias/political view and see if he had learned anything useful from science, although I doubt it.
I do agree that the book definitely has a very condescending and offensive tone. However, as an epidemiologist he does have a lot of interesting points about how to prevent the spread of future diseases and pandemics. It was a pretty quick read.
Negative 5 stars TW xenophobic, racist language The author of Diseases Without Borders is a bigot. This book reads like it was written by cheeto-in-chief himself. I can't help to hear twitlers voice while reading the text. If half-truths and fear mongering is what you find true or entertaining than this book is for you. Highly xenophobic rant style of writing is sure to make any maga person tip their hat. Notice that I'm pointing to an politician and a group of folks rather than offering a summary of this book. It's exactly the same style this book uses to build its unstable foundation. I haven't read every page only the first chapter, further chapter titles, and sources were all I could take.
I picked this book randomly, expected this is a book about healthcare. And it is, mostly. But at some first chapter, the author talked like, a lot about political stuff, which I found interesting, but not particularly what I searched for, because the author's audience is US-citizen. I still recommend for non-US citizen, since you can learn about their current problems and how to deal with it. The other chapters are very informative and useful. Basically, it clarifies common knowledge on healthy cleaning habit like washing hands, vitamins supplements taking, etc. which had given me a broader and deeper understand why it is so important. Neat!
For a book supposedly written by someone with a Ph.D., the tone and quality of discussion struck me as extremely unprofessional. The text is dripping with vitriol and inflammatory remarks to the point that it is very hard to take the author seriously. Apparently the author is a popular conservative radio host--never heard of him, myself--so I suppose that fans of his work will probably find this somewhat palatable. If you aren't already a fan of his, I strongly suggest you take a pass on this one.
The book May have some epidemiological value, but it is difficult to tell since the author's focus is slamming Obama. The extent and tone of rants against Obama not only detract from the epidemiology sprinkled in, they don't even qualify as any kind of intelligent political assessment. I would gladly end this book if it were edited. There may be some interesting information within its pages. However, as it is now, I would advise anyone interested in epidemiology, health, national policy, or politics in general, not to waste their time.
This is a book that Dr. Michael Weiner attempted to publish before he began his career in talk radio in the 1990s. However, he couldn't find a publisher. If one thinks back to the political-medical climate of the early 1990s, recall that the beginning of the move of this country to a more socialist footing was about to begin. We had experienced the AIDs epidemic for more than 10 years, with no real end in sight. Dr. A. Fauci has been hired in 1984 by the Federal Government to "solve" the AIDs epidemic problem, but as we now know, he would't even close the bath-houses in San Francisco. That was an obvious public health measure to take. I suggest if anyone wants to know more about this period in our history, a very sad one, read Randy Shilts' book "And the Band Played On." One could posit what that book is about from the title.
In comes a new Democratic administration, with many changes to Washington that affect us even today. It was going to become a country from globalists, but we didn't know much about that yet--we had just seen the USSR fall. There was some relief, and then chaos. In this climate, decades of very tight immigration policies were about to be abandoned. Dr. Michael Savage's book would have been coming out just in time. With a Ph.D., interdisciplinary, with a focus on epidemiology and nutrition, Savage was primed (Ph.D. 1977, U. Cal. Berkeley) after working for years in the health industry, to tell us the truth about the breaking of the U.S. borders and what it would do to the country.
One of the most positive aspects of this book is its practicality. While Savage was loathe on his radio show to speak in great detail about nutrition and health habits, this book is full of suggestions, and sometimes they are necessarily graphic. Where did you learn to wash your hands? Probably watching family members do it. Do you know how to do it correctly? Savage tells you, in detail, and what to do after you wash your hands--in detail.
Another aspect of the influx of "refugees" is that their approaches to hygiene are likely to be different. Likewise, the approach to eating and nutrition that gives us such a high living standard is subverted in some places--such as New York City. "Bushmeat" (monkey, rat, for example" are prohibited in the U.S., but the West Africans living in NYC have an underground economy in bushmeats. Fish from China and Asia is likely to come from very contaminated rivers, and the fish carry pathogens that are carcinogenic to humans. You need to know where your food comes from!! Savage often spoke of eating in Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, which he hinted were rather unhealthy. He needed calories from fats to be able to do a 3 hour radio show--lots of energy, but admitted it didn't come from necessarily good sources (no xenophobia here, just nutritional facts).
He is fairly specific about how to boost your immunity, and the blessings of our God-given immune system. Why harm our wonderful immune system? Recent data show that exposure to Covid results in recovery and an immune system that is stronger than ever--17 times stronger. The "vaccines" on the mandated market provide nothing like this, in fact, they can depress the immune system to 1/6 of normal--which comes from a leading British researcher. What can you do? Eat right, exercise, and get proper rest--just like your mother told you. Savage is very specific about these things. There is a quote here about the processed meats that contain carcinogens (sodium nitrite)--but today, you can buy processed meats that don't have it. The point is, knowledge is power.
This book has been updated considerably into the problems of the 2010s and beyond. Ironically, this book is possibly more relevant today than it was 30-some years ago. We now know the effect of lockdowns--closing bath-houses in San Francisco would have been a minor inconvenience compared to what hit this country when the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic hit the country. Now, after January 20, 2021, our borders are broken, with massive movements of populations across the southern border--no ID, no passports, no testing for any infections (even TB), and tens of thousands, possibly a million in short order, will have entered the US illegally, with full benefits of refugee status (no paperwork)....and it is up to the American populace to educate itself about the dangers posed by the "refugees" coming to their small towns en masse. I do NOT oppose immigration. However, I do support assimilation, which benefited many of my grandparents' generation in the early 20th century. The Hearst organization's first wire reports of pogroms, annual, in the so-called "Pale of Settlement" (parts of the Russian Empire where Jews were allowed to live) shocked the world with a savage pogrom in Kishinev in 1903. It also led to two of my ancestors leaving the Pale for America, although I have innumerable contemporary relatives living in Russia proper and surrounding countries now.
The point is, we have apparently not maintained what we learned from the public health advances of the 20th century--which gave us such a high living standard and long average life spans, after the end of the era of the horse as transportation and the streets as open sewers. However, we're going to face new diseases because of the breaking of our border, and Savage's book is timeless in this regard. I recommend it to anyone who sees the massive changes that have happened in 2021, to become prepared for a new world. There may not be a successful New World Order as George H.W. Bush spoke of around 1990--there is still strong support for nation-states. But the lessons of Savage--that diseases don't respect borders drawn on a map, is good advice for all of us and this book is a great introduction to the subject.
Many households have no books--I've seen many of them...but this is a book to have--even if you have to read it on Kindle!!
Conservative radio talk show host uses his academic credentials to author this informative work of infectious diseases. He gives valuable information on how one can protect oneself by boosting the immune system. He also makes a strong case for securing our borders and a strong case against voluntary self-quarantine. At times he is a bit dogmatic, but never fails to entertain.
Right now this is a perfect book to read, as Trump is trying to help with the virus we have the opposite coming from the left. I am sadden to think that an echo of the Obama administration will be in charge soon and we will have no chance against this virus that they already have used for political gain. Please read this book and protect yourself in all aspects.
Must read now. This book shows why we need to eat right and keep good hygiene . Dr. Savage is a leader in presenting factual evidence on topics. His opinion also matters as he cares about our well being.
I bought this book way before the Covid 19 virus pandemic. I read it again with different outlook and it's amazing how prescient Dr. Savage was at the time. Now more than ever his words ring true along with advice on how to build up your immune system.
Dr. Savage offers very good and practical advice. He also warned his radio listeners about what to do during this pandemic so no one would get sick. He obviously cares about people.
This books will help you understand the importance of hygiene and how dr savage already knew something like this was going go happen and how you can help yourself by staying healthy.
Disease Management & Prevention: From Political to Practical
Well known conservative talk show host, nutritionist, and epidemiologist, Dr. Michael Savage rips through the PC climate that is reintroducing a host of viral and parasitical infestations into our society and threatening our well-being, but more, he offers scientific and common sense guides to getting and staying healthy, from proper hand washing techniques to stress management to disease prevention and when and what supplements to use. Easy to read, but more than anecdotal, with specific important medical studies cited, as well as government coverup and mismanagement attempts delineated, this is a unique practical no-nonsense guide to protecting yourself, your family, and perhaps, your country. Nice table of contents and useful antioxidants/nutrition segment.
Downloaded and read new Michael Savage book on first leg of cross country flight. Glad to see someone telling it like it is on link between immigration policies and renewed infectious diseases. Second part of book is equally important - a great resource on building immune system through nutrition and supplements. His knowledge of the science was incredibly helpful. Appreciate that Savage recognizes that parent asking for safer vaccines (and the right to make family medical decisions) are not 'anti-vaccine'. This was a good read. Highly recommend.
I really was interested in the book because of the title, but then when I read the first chapter I didn't realize it was going to be politically charged. Honestly, I didn't really care for the rhetoric Savage used to describe Obama and his policies, but I did appreciate some of his evidence and logic. He is in the medical field and his political views reflect that trade, but the type of rhetoric he uses is too polarizing to have a positive effect. With that being said, the middle chapters of the book are really insightful about boosting your immunity.
