The wild Montana mountains are no place for an aging widow to live alone with dementia. And when Cathleen Donaghue discovers the poor woman’s condition, there’s no way she’ll walk away without helping. After all, she left her comfortable Boston home to help her brothers with their mining town medical practice because she wanted to make a difference. But the wild elements she encounters on this mission of mercy are nothing like she expected, especially the widow’s mountain man son who shows up out of the blue.
Trapper Reuben Scott planned only a quick visit to his parents’ homestead to check on them and tan his winter hides, but the strange woman standing at his mother’s stove is a shock. And then she tells him his father has died and his mother is losing her mind. The sad news may bring an end to the life he’s loved—trapping, living in the wild freedom of these mountains, working closely with the Indians—no one demanding he measure up. But he’ll do anything for his family, what little he has left, that is. Even deal with the city woman who seems to connect with his confused mother.
When tragedy strikes Cathleen’s family, she’s forced to choose between duty and the people who need her most. And the wrong decision could quickly lead to disaster. As the danger spirals out of her control, this impassive mountain man may be the only one with the skills to save her. But can she trust him with her heart, too?

Cathleen Donaghue came to Butte City in Montana Territory from Boston to help her doctor brother's wive's and young babies. She went 5 hours into the mountains to help widow Scott who is becoming senile and is currently alone. Her son, trapper Reuben comes to his parent's home in late winter to discover a strange young lady caring for his mother. The vivid descriptions of the mountain was so beautiful. This was a well written story and how the effects of dementia in a setting that is less then ideal was explored very well. I really liked this story a lot. The rugged living as well was showcased but you can still get the care you need in a rugged part of the country.
I took a break from this series but glad I returned, especially with this one. A sweet love story, with great characters, but the plot was stellar. The decisions the main characters had to make because of a secondary character's illness brought the whole story to life. Thank you, Misty, for shining such a heartfelt light on an illness that affects many in our society.
This is more like 3.5 stars, but I rounded up. Sweet romance, with some adventure. A bit predictable, and the historical setting isn't really utilized to its full potential. But overall, it is a fast paced read that doesn't drag or bog down. The romance shines as the best part of this novel--it is heartwarming and realistic. This book is a standalone, but I did feel that I was missing just a little something not knowing anything about the characters that were likely featured in previous books in the series. If you like historical romance, this novel is definitely a winner.
The Lady and the Mountain Call is the fifth book of the Mountain Dreams series. This is my new favorite of the series. Great, sweet, and clean historical. I look forward to more by this author in the future. 5 plus stars
The Lady and theMountain Call #5 by Misty M. Beller. Cathleen went up the mountain to take care of mum who had dementia. Her brother, Bryan, I think told her that she mum needed help. Her husband, Quinn wasn’t living anymore and the son was gone. Mum’s husband. She was an aging widow. Cathleen Donaghue was single and liked to help people. There was a lot of different things going on with mum with her because of the dementia. One day, the son came to visit because it wasn’t a good year for trapping. Reuben Scott, trapper, found out that his father died and his mum wasn’t doing well and found the nurse living with mum. And as the story goes on, Cathleen went home to Butte. Her brother, Bryan and Miriam, her sister-in-law wanted her there. Well, Cathleen went back up the mountain by herself and with Mum. They became lost and Cathleen fell off a ledge. She went back because she was in love with Scott. Can’t remember how Scott found them. They were in a sleigh going down the mountain and then up the mountain. Reuben rescued Cathleen. He heard a moan or cry. She was on another ledge. mum was in the sleigh. But it all turned out and they all went up the mountain. Six stars for this book, very good.Mary Read/Amazon Customer & Goodreads.
I liked Cathleen well enough at the beginning, and I loved Reuben the whole time... but I completely lost my appreciation of this book. Reuben deserved better.
Oh, it's hit and miss with this author. I want to love it. Christian romance, not racy. The setting, 'slice of life' a la frontier is lovely. But the characters are becoming worn out though. From book 1 to book 5 it follows a similar pattern. Lovely, charming, kind Christian woman wins over the stoic mountain rancher/doctor/trapper/etc who sees no need for an Almighty. Bit sexist to keep expecting good women to keep pursuading good men to see the need for God, but whatever. The last book was a slight deviation from that formula which was refreshing. But book 5, like book 2, was back to flat characters, formulaic plotlines, and very little hook. I do like and appreciate the continued use of previous charcaters. They feel familiar. However the historic or native peoples angle could have been used much more fully. It's a nice read for what it is, but it could have been more. Slightly disappointed, but not overly surprised.
A book that I enjoyed. I listened to the audiobook and it was great. The narrator brought this story to life. I worked with dementia people for twenty seven years and I would say this author did a great job with that. Mrs Scott had dementia and Cathleen felt like she needed to help her even though she would be hours away from her own family. Her family was not completely agreeable to this but her brother finally agreed to let her go. Well different situations happens and also Mrs Scott’s son comes home. What will Cathleen or her brother do now? The characters were wonderful and the author paints a great picture for my mind. I could almost feel the snow falling and feel the cold wind. I couldn’t wait to find out how the story all worked out. I loved the ending too. If you like historical romance this book is for you. Don’t forget the audiobook is wonderful. I received a copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This was such a sweet book and I enjoyed every minute! Reuben and Cathleens story was wonderful to read amongst the back drop of the mountains of Montana. Misty really knows how to describe the scene around the characters to where it feels like you are right there with them and the story that unfolds will leave you wanting more from these characters. I was excited to see some of the characters from previous books in there as well as meeting the Scott family. The Spiritual growth of the characters is my favorite part and the romance is sweet while still being clean. Misty is a wonderful author and her books don't disappoint.
Misty Beller is becoming one of my favorite authors. This is the last of this series that I am aware of and as good as all the previous volumes of this series were. This one was my favorite. I really liked all of the characters in this book; especially the main characters Reuben and Cathleen and of course Reuben's mother Reuben's Mother. My favorite line from the book is, "It's not the things that matter, it's the people." I like reading series like this one because all of the characters in the previous books are included which enriches each volume. I have other books by this author that I intend to read. I am looking forward to them.
Misty Beller, your books are beautiful romances and so clearly full of God's provision and love. I am in awe of your ability to make each book a page turner showing the depth of love for Christ in their lives. I loved Cathleen and Reubens romance, his Mum included. I also love series romance and the fact that I as a reader can become invested with the lives of the characters you create. Thank you for wonderful hours of reading!
This is the 5th book in the series. I have read the other 4 books but failed to enter them on Goodreads. Needless to say, I am very happy with this series of books. The setting is in the mountains on Montana, and the story begins about an elderly widow who is living alone and she has dementia. Her doctor found her wounded outside in the snow and, out of concern, his sister goes to the his patients cabin in the mountains to care for her. While there, the doctor's sister, Cathy, eventually meets Reuben, her patients son.
The author used great brushstrokes of the mountains beauty to guide the reader through the rugged lifestyle of a mountain man but also showed how God could use difficult situations to reveal Himself to that man. Cathleen was determined to do God's will and because of that, she could overcome her limitations. She portrayed each character as flawed but willing to learn. Great captivating story.
Cathleen Donaghue came to Butte City in Montana Terratory from Boston to help her doctor brother's wive's and young babies. She went 5 hours into the mountains to help widow Scott who is becoming senile and is currently alone. Her son, trapper Reuben comes to his parent's home in late winter to discover a strange young lady caring for his mother.
This was an Interesting story. Cathleen went up the mountain with her brother to check on one of his patients. This lady had dementia and her husband had recently died. Cathleen decided to stay with her for a while, because she needed someone and her son was off trapping. After a few weeks, her son retuned home, surprised to find Cathleen there caring for his mother. So much more to this story, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I really enjoyed this story. Was really concerned for Mrs Scott to begin with. Cathleen is an outstanding character. Loved her giving, servant's heart. Her strength of conviction is inspiring. I love how she relies on God for everything, especially in tough choices. The whole story was uplifting and inspiring. Left me deeply grateful for all God's blessings. A story that stays with you after you've finished the book. Nice.
A unbelievably beautifully written saga of love, trust and hope that embodies the spirit of the brave men and women who built a life in the wilderness. A young woman who answers the call to help a elderly woman in need learns to survive in a small mountain cabin while caring for someone in need. This dramatic and inspiring sweet story was awesome. Five stars!
I had a free copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. When Cathleen Donaghue finds an old woman alone and confused at her farm on the mountain, she decides to stay and help her. The woman’s son, Reuben Scott, a trapper, arrives he discovers his father died, and Cathleen assisting his mother. He stays to work on the farm, and take care of his mother, but ends up falling for soft hearted, hardworking Cathleen. An inspiring story about frontier life and its problems.
It was a great story line that held my attention from start to finish. Loved the author and her insight into each of the characters. A family member is showing the signs of dementia. The condition is so devastating, makes the patient lose all dignity. I loved the way that the author handled this in this story. Great job.
This was a nice, clean, Christian romance and, despite the series' title, this is the only book in the series that had an actual mountain man as the leading male character. The author must have had a lot of first hand experience with dementia. It was certainly true to life and much how I remembered caring for my mother minus the snow and the mountain setting. 😌
Everything about the mountains come alive in this. You can see every detail as you read. The emotions are so clear. You keep reading and can't stop. I have felt so many of the emotions in each book of the series. Each with a struggle of some kind and a faith that gets them through.
This is a love story with a twist. You will find plenty adventure, excitement, and a couple surprises in store. Misty Beller is the author and she has done an exceptional job with the plot and the characters. You will enjoy discovering how Ruben and Cathleen find their happily ever after.
I loved this story. Misty m Beller is a great writer. She makes her books come to life in the first chapter and I am hooked. I read much too late into the night. I can visualize the scenes she describes and the stories are believable in their detail. Please keep writing more stories for us, I need to to follow this family some more.
Excellent writing. Vivid characters. Inspiring story about His faithfulness to us as His children. As we follow Him and share love, kindness, true compassion with others, He answers all our prayers and we see our heart’s hope fulfilled. Seek God and trust Him at all times, He has all the details prepared to bless us.
It is no small miracle when you wait for the man or woman God has in store for you. In this day and time waiting isn't in our nature. Now we tend to take our lives in our hands, yet when we stop and let God in the changes are wonders life in our own hands could never have made happen. This book tells that story beautifully.
This is is a book about a Boston lady going to help her brothers
This is a book of a sister coming to help her brothers wife when she had a baby And then riding in the mountains to help her Dr brother care for a patient that had dementia. And finally meeting her son that came to see how his mom was.
Such a lovely story of coming to love someone, and a beautiful life of service to another and the joy it brings! This is a great "doing the right thing" for another (a woman with dementia) and how real love grows over time! Just enough adventure and real-life things happening in story to make it feel real!❤️
This was a fast read. It was a good book to take on vacation. It was about a good hearted women from Boston who has come to the mountain country of Butte, Montana to help her brothers and their medical practice. When helping an aging widow, suffering from dementia, who is isolated in the mountain - she falls in love with the country and a handsome mountain man. It is a sweet and easy read.
