The Jack Reacher Field Manual: An Unofficial Companion to Lee Child's Reacher Novels

Rate this book
You don’t know Jack—Jack Reacher, that is . . .

In The Jack Reacher Field Manual: An Unofficial Companion to Lee Child’s Reacher Novels, from ex-Army major and New York Times bestselling author George Beahm, get up-close and personal with Reacher like never before.

The only book of its kind, the Field Manual draws on 17 years of interviews, novels, stories, and more to demystify author Lee Child’s larger-than-life, name-taking, quick-thinking one-man avenger. Child calls the Reacher novels “almost entirely autobiographical,” and The Jack Reacher Field Manual seamlessly integrates the literary creator and his creation to provide the most complete portrait of Jack Reacher available.

Dive into Jack Reacher’s life with:
- A detailed dossier on Reacher and his life at West Point and in the Army’s Military Police Corps
- Reacher’s rules of engagement, including how he handles a street brawl
- A full-color drifter’s roadmap of the US, detailing the places Reacher has visited in the novels
- Reacher’s philosophy for surviving under the radar
- A biography on Child and an A-to-Z list of the key people, places, and things in his life
- And more, including a glossary of US Army acronyms that appear in the series and a comprehensive reading list of Reacher novels, novellas, and stories

The Jack Reacher Field Manual belongs in the fatigue jacket of any fan craving more information about this internationally popular literary antihero.

Like many filmgoers, I was introduced to the character Jack Reacher in late 2012 when I saw Jack Reacher staring Tom Cruise. Not a consistent reader of the thriller genre, I was, however, aware of Lee Child's name, because I would regularly see at least one (or more) of his books prominently displayed on the bestseller shelf at the local bookstore and his paperbacks in the local grocery store on the magazine rack. I took from the movie that Reacher was enigmatic, intense, and deadly; I wanted to know more! Thanks to Smart Pop and BenBella Books, they have just released George Beahm's The Jack Reacher Field Guide: An Unofficial Companion to Lee Child's Reacher Novels.

The book is divided into three parts, each focusing on the author, the character, and concludes with web resources and lists. Readers will be able to read a biography of the Englishman Child, who at a very young age, developed a love affair with America.

This book is about Lee Child and the character Jack Reacher.
I skipped over the first third about Lee Child; it's chiefly an interview he gave with Playboy and it just wasn't interesting. I skimmed the chapter making excuses about why Tom Cruise was cast (there are quotes by Child to justify casting Cruise about how the character isn't defined by his size, and then the introduction to the very next chapter - where it actually starts talking about the character - is a quote by Child about Reacher's size: "he's huge... no one in his right mind would mess with him"). Besides the fact that Reacher's size is described/emphasised IN EVERY SINGLE BOOK, Cruise absolutely does not capture the character in any way, shape, or form (literally and figuratively, in terms of personality, demeanour, and physicality)!
Since I've read all the books, it actually added little to my knowledge; it was more of a "refresher" of the character's timeline and background (medals won, when his mother died, etc).
Some parts describe the role of the Military Police and the insignia and medals.

If you're a fan and stumble across this book, give it a flick through, but I wouldn't say it's worth going out of your way to read.

There are Siri on iPhone, Cortana on Windows, Jasper on Android... the "assistants", ready to help and answer your questions.

For those interested in Jack Reacher, there’s George, now. "George" is for George Beahm, author of the "The Jack Reacher Field Manual" (I hope he will forgive me if I play with his name). It’s not a book to be read as a story from beginning to end (after all, how many people do you know that spend hours chatting with their virtual assistants?). It’s a volume to refer to when needed, or when the curiosity arises. It’s a deep and complex collection of informations on the character of Jack Reacher, on Lee Child, on topics around them, on the military life, on the world of thriller tales… An encyclopedic collection, filled to the brim, recommended to fans of Reacher and also to those who are just approaching his novels. Or to those who want to look good by beating their friends in a quiz game on Reacher...

My thanks to George Beahm and NetGalley for providing the ARC.

I requested this book because I thought it would be like a key to some of the personal information that those of us who haven't been able to read each one of the books could use to help catch up. But it wasn't. It was more about the author himself and the origins of the Reacher character and then some about Jack but it was not what I thought it would be. I am giving it a 3 because I am not sure it belongs in this category or could at least fit in more than one. It is a good book but just not what I was expecting from the title..

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For me this book didn't really meet my expectations, or its own description- I expected more and was quite disappointed that the book was mainly full of quotes and information that you can find elsewhere on the internet for free if you look. It is good that the detail is all in one place if you don't want to go looking. A good idea but for me it fell flat and not what I was expecting.

Pleased to win, of course, but disappointed in the book; not what I expected. Read like a college must-read primer: facts/trivia re Reacher supported by quotes from Child's novels. Waded thru the book because I am a Child/Jack Reacher fan, but on the whole not a fan of Beahm's effort.

This book was so boring and repetitive. I love the story line of Jack Reacher but this really didn't tell me anything new.
