Leah Remini: My Escape from Scientology

Rate this book
The story of Leah Remini's involvement with Scientology—a faith founded in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard—begins in Brooklyn's working-class Bensonhurst neighborhood, where she was introduced to the religion by her mom. More than three decades later, Leah summoned the courage to leave the church—something few celebrities at her level of fame have ever done before and almost none have ever talked about.

This People Spotlight Story explores Leah Remini and her escape from Scientology.

Interesting short story about Leah's break from the church of Scientology. A church that her mother introduced her to as a girl. A church her mother also left when Leah did.

I've heard, via the media, so many odd stories about this "religion".

I'm interested in reading the "no-holds-barred memoir that Leah actually wrote on her life in this church, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology.

All of this evidence

So much evidence against this cult. Why won't the government go after them? Backlash false lawsuits from Scientology should not stop anyone. I am glad that she got out, I can't imagine being outspoken and not speaking up at the atrocities committed by its members. Cruise needs to go to jail for slave labor.

Good for you Leah

I am proud of you for standing up for yourself . My best wishes as you go forward in your life and you find a church that you are happy in. This book answered a lot of questions I had about this church. Church is supposed to give peace and happiness.

I Love Leah Remini...she's as real as it gets!!

I'm a huge fan of Leah. What's not to like..she's hilariously funny...straightforward (I wish I was)..and she's a badass!
For her to leave + take on the "church of scientology" (I think it's a cult)..
I think she's brave...I believe every word she says about "the church"...and about Tom Cruise..I think HE thinks he's the "second coming"...yeah, of the looney birds, maybe. Any Church I've ever been associated with would
NEVER-EVER act in the way this "church" has. If a member leaves + goes to a not g error Church, they don't talk about them the way "tcos" has about her AND others that have left.
It seems to me they started treating Leah like crap after "the cruises wedding"...I'm just glad she + her family got out & remain loyal to one another... THAT'S what REAL Churches hope for their members.
It seems from the experience Leah has had, she's gonna be better off.
I can't wait to see this sassy Brooklyn gal on another sitcom...hopefully it won't be long!!!
Good Luck Leah..to you and your funny..AND loyal family!!

I ordered this from (again) my daily cheapie reading email that I get. It downloaded to my kindle, but I only got the 'sample' 14 pages!! can't find the rest of it anywhere!! It doesn't say SAMPLE, it's just 14 pages long. Didn't pay enough to complain to amazon, and didn't care enough about the rest of it to order it again!! As her fame seemed to be waning....she comes out with this book, but it seems truthful and she seemed sincere, so I guess if you're a real fan, it might be a good read. First time I ever had this happen with a book ordered on line........strange.

Much ado about nothing.

I disliked the illusion that this was supposed to be a book. It's not more than an article providing no details into Leah's journey. Anyone could have written it, from the little insight shared. I knew this much from rag mag headlines.Very disappointed.

Not the full book.

My one star is based on the fact that I thought I was getting the full book not a brief clip. I still want to read the book. I don't want people to make the same mistake.

This is supposed to be a book?

I admire Leah Remini and was interested in learning her story, but this account is absurdly short. It reads like a magazine article. A complete waste of time!

The book is superficial and

I thought this book would be deeper but it is the length at a magazine article.
I found it a waste of time

I picked this book up because I love Leah Remini she is so straight-forward and tells you like it is a lady that we all want for our BFF. I thought about looking into Scientology when I was a young teen in Las Vegas but THANKFULLY I had no one to lead me and truthfully the book on its own did not appeal to me to look any further. But Leah' s family story and the story of all those she has brought to the light makes me thank God and my family for having such strong ties to me that I did not go looking for something that I thought was missing and end up under the control of this cult or worse. I am so in support of Leah and her team that I don't have words to express It. YOU GO GIRL! SHE IS WONDER WOMAN in my eyes! May God Bless your journey!

Leah Remini's People Magazine (Interview) for those who don't want the whole magazine

So I bought this wondering what it would be like … I actually really enjoyed the fact that it was the people magazine interview from when her book "troublemaker " came out . Which the interview is very interesting and shows how far Scientology will go to silent somebody and or scare them . What I was saying about this little miniature people magazine clipping they're selling on the Kindle store is , that it is and unabridged interview, which is far more in depth, hasslefree to read unlike the magazine when it was out 90 days ago or so. Still own it obviously :-) but I found reading the article was difficult because you would have to jump around to different sections and paid to have the layout and also the articles and how long it is engaged in a different section of the magazine. If you're that interested in this subject and also Leah Remini's story it's well worth the $0.99 and the $11.99 to $13.99 to buy the Kindle edition for your interest/guilty pleasure reading and if you have audible I highly recommend getting the audiobook for immersion reading. Anyways really thought this was a great add on to my books about the inside debauchery that goes on in Scientology and also to her story in general even if you do not read about what Scientology is really like and how their religion is and how messed up some of the beliefs are. Although, for my to criticize a religion? All wars start on differences between religious believes etc. .

Scientology Is A Fraud

How can any mother, like Leah's, force her child into such a sham organization? Really, spacecraft trips, pods in volcanos, living like the homeless. I can't imagine such deplorable conditions. But it happens, look at the Jim Jones jungle thing. I can not understand how desperate and/or crazy someone must be to believe such hogwash. When I read about this cult, I laughed and laughed. Right commodore? When will the government close this place down and put the Davids and Toms behind bars. Ever notice that the people are always escaping? Doesn't that indicate a cult?

I have Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology on my TBR; so to 'get a taste' I've read this 'book' (which is actually more like an article). Stories like these give me the creeps... I just don't understand this religion... or any other religion that forces people to do things they don't want. Looking forward to reading the book!

Don't know what I was thinking. For some unexplainable reason I'm drawn to blogs, books, etc... that focus on scientology. Because I enjoy some of Leahs work and I celebrate anyone escaping the claws of scientology, I purchased what turned out to be a People Magazine article. As you can imagine it had the depth and was as engaging as People Magazine articles are know to be. Entirely my fault. I must learn to not be so quick with the " one click" buy button.

Inspirational from an inspirational personal

What incredible strength. The attempts to discredit you from what can only be labeled a CULT failed and made your story even more authentic, because if they were unconcerned they would leave you alone. I have always thought you were great as an actress, you were spunky; I think if you use that spunk and lean on your family you will be fine. Your fans love you for many reasons, I for one, love your strength and courage.❤️

Interesting Story. I believe it

I saw parts of her television interview which interested me in the article. I have seen other articles on people leaving what seems to me to be a cult. I was interested to learn how she got involved in the first place. This article was not very in-depth since it was a magazine article but I guess you can read her book to find out more.

I probably wouldn't have paid the dollar it cost if I had it to do over again

This subject is fascinating to me, so I was looking forward to reading this. It's a little tricky to follow in a few places, but definitely made me want to know more. Just save your money on this and consider reading Remini's book Troublemaker. That's my next stop.

Interesting, good story

Good story, informative and always interesting to learn about experiences of others and the things they go through especially scientology. It's so bizarre to me that people actually believe in that crap and are willing to follow a science fiction writer and base an entire religion on it and him!!!

A very good read!

Leah is brutally honest. She loved this religion as she was growing up. She believed that she was saving the world, but slowly realized that this religion was changing, and she didn't like the direction it was going. I believe she just wants anyone considering joining Scientology to know what they are getting into, so there are no surprises.

Respect Leah for standing up to then fit what her values deemed mute important

Not enough clarity in her explanation of events in the book,a bit hard to follow. Wish more explanation were available .I'd like to understand.

Quite enlightening on this cult religion.

Makes me want to read her other book "Troublemaker". I have to admire her courage in not only leaving, but in telling the world about her experience she may save someone else from getting drawn into Scientology.

Waste of money It is a less than page or so, interview. Why would I pay for a interview I can find on You Tube.

And then I have to have a certain numbers of words. That should be my choice What I want to submit. Never again

Interesting Article

Frankly this Sounds like a cult. No one person or church organization should have that much control over people's free thinking. She should be very proud of breaking free.

I was of the mind that scientology, was more a cult than a religion.I admire Leah 's ability.

To see the errors of her ways. BRAVA Leah, you are definitely on the right track. Your mindset is clearly on the right track. Stay strong, stay YOU.

Well written story about Scientology, if you leave you can't associate with your family? I totally believe everything Leah stated, most everyone that has left says the same thing

Scientology

Leah Remini bravely tackles the church of Scientology and wins back herself. Man-made religion is a scary institution. This eye-opening account leaves the reader grateful not to have been sucked under the current of bad religion.
