From bestselling romantic comedy author Stacey Wiedower comes a story about finding love in the social media age...
Jen Dawson is an interior designer at the top of her game, with a job at the South’s hottest design firm and a fiancé who’s on the short list of the city’s most eligible catches. But her perfectly designed plans for her life fall apart when her prima donna boss screws her over and her fiancé dumps her on the same day.
What's a self-respecting Southern girl to do? ... is what she should have asked. Instead, she drowns her troubles in cocktails and then adds trouble of her own by "drunkbooking" a Facebook status that gets her in more hot water at work. As her ex reappears at all the wrong times, Jen's flirtations heat up with all the wrong men—until she finds the one guy who makes her realize love just isn’t something she can plan. And when she vows to set her life back on track and stage a comeback, Jen uncovers shady business at her design firm that could take down the entire operation ... and her, but only if she lets it.

Stacey Wiedower started her career as a newspaper reporter before following her passion to interior design school. After spending three years at a firm with bizarre similarities to "Designing Women," she began funneling all her experience into her work as a full-time writer. Now she pens novels, short stories, magazine articles, website copy and more, and the wacky characters she's met poke their heads into her stories from time to time. Stacey lives in Tennessee with her husband, also a writer, and a son who's inherited their overactive imaginations.
How to Look Happy opens with its heroine, up-and-coming interior designer Jen Dawson, having the worst day imaginable. First, she's stabbed in the back by her boss who uses her feminine wiles to steal a big client of Jen's, then she's dumped by her perfect-on-paper fiancé in the parking lot of the bar where she's been drowning her sorrows about work. The humanity! A blotto Jen retaliates by updating her Facebook status with the details of how she's been wronged. Of course, she doesn't even remember having done this when she wakes up the next morning. Although she scrambles to do damage control, it's too late. Her world has been forever changed by that drunken tell-all, and how she copes with the fallout from her cyber faux pas is the crux of this story.
First of all, this book made me really glad I don't drink! ;) What happens to Jen does make for a very entertaining read, though. I was equally engrossed in all the intrigue going on at the design firm where Jen worked (What was the deal with her secretive, always-absent boss? Why was the junior designer Jen helped get a job suddenly giving her the cold shoulder?), as well as with her romantic life. (Would she get back together with her ex? Revisit a relationship from her teen years? Give a new hottie a shot?) I'm fascinated by interior design and the author clearly knows her stuff in that area, so I really enjoyed getting a behind-the-scenes look at what interior designers do. And Jen has a really interesting variety of clients (from kooky bakery owner, Chick, to creepy, high-powered lawyer, Emory).
Social media plays a big part in Jen's story, and the author offers some insightful commentary on how we're all so obsessed with documenting our lives and sharing them online that we're never in the moment to enjoy what we're experiencing. And most of what we see online is a façade anyway, so trying to "keep up with the Joneses" is a fruitless endeavor.
If you're looking for a fun, fast read this summer, I highly recommend How to Look Happy, and I am looking forward to Stacey Wiedower's next release.
This is 3.5 star read! After reading a classic I wanted to pick something more modern and this book with familar trappings of a lady unlucky in love with social media mishaps seemed to fit the bill.
I can safely say that this book had a lot of potential. It had interesting interior designing mileu, career oriented woman, a lot of funny one liners, but some sections of the book felt repetitive. There were lot of references to her work, which although interesting didn't warrant this much detailing. Her clients were an eccentric mix from the good, bad and the creepy. Among her friends only Carrie stood out, didn't realize the last book had Amelia's story, now I know what happens to them. There were too many characters from her friends, to office coworkers, to brothers and their family not to mention the clients, only a couple of them stuck. This disrupted the flow of narration a bit where I had to spend some time to recollect the character. Also not enough time was spent on the leading man, a lot more on her exes.
All things aside, this was a clean good book, Jen's trials were palpable as that of an over worked ambitious woman, she made you invest in her, care for her and want her to not just look happy but be happy and the neat ending made up for a few of the rough edges in the middle of the book. Looking forward to Quinn's read next, she was funny in this one! :)
From page one, this book was packed with conflict and I love me some conflict! You think you had a bad day, read this book! Poor Jenny had both her personal and professional worlds knock her on her ass in the same day, and whenever you thought it couldn't get worse, it did. I loved Jen. She was so "real." When things went bad, she often dealt with it by drinking and seeking the comfort of her friends before ultimately pulling up her big-girl panties and planning a course of action. I would definitely want to be friends with her and always knew she had it in her to turn things around. The book was not lacking romantic tension either, and while I wanted to shake Jen for making a big deal about being "age appropriate" (seriously, what's the big deal about a woman dating a guy a few years younger. No one blanches when it's the other way around), I loved how it all turned out. The author is so skilled at description and I could totally picture Memphis, a city I've never been, the entire time.
This is my third book from the author and I loved it. I can't wait for book 4 coming soon!
One of those reads that when I started, I was iffy on whether it'd be for me, but I enjoyed the book ( it actually reminded me of my first novel in both subject matter and style). Wiedower creates a likable, if somewhat misguided, heroine. Jennifer is a friend you'd sit and have a glass of wine with and the tone of the book is friendly and casual. And her love of interior design, wine, and her local restaurant scene speaks to many. The narrative flowed nicely and the cast of characters is well-rounded. And Wiedower does a great job tapping in to the absurdities and drawbacks of social media, a love-hate relationship that so many experience.
Stacey Wiedower has written a book that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. You won't want to put the book down! There are plenty of twists that will keep you guessing at what will happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this manuscript from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This isn't just spoiler filled, this review is a full on rant. How the hell is this "Romantic Comedy " so well rated? To start with, it's not at all funny and I couldn't care less about the romance, which consists of her dirtbag ex that walks all over her, and then being torn between her first love that lives with his parents, is hung up on his ex, treats her like trash and broke her heart as a teen or a nice guy who... might maybe not stick around town forever? Guess who she spends her time on? Ding ding ding it's the ex who's an ass.
And what's worse then reading about someone spending their time with someone like that? It's reading her constantly apologizing to the men treating her terribly when she has nothing to apologize for!
This book didn't help that its premise is every reason I quit social media years ago. The entire stories plot is fueled by "well here's every pitfalls of social media but it happens and we can't escape it" but um.... yeah you can escape it. Even if you are a slave to your phone maybe after the first risk of Facebook effecting your life you would maybe edit a privacy setting or two? But nope
The thing with the boss and her job was just as annoying but the theme through the entire book was doormat Jen so no need to expand on that.
But probably the worst of them all, she wasn't a real character. In the first few chapters the ex says he's been with her for 7 years and never knew who she is... and truly that is what happens during this entire book. Unless who she is is a doormat who can spend hours on Facebook. Otherwise I've got nothing

Easy to love characters with a storyline that doesn't skip a beat. Simply lovely family and friends mixed with a passion for her work, makes Jen a heroine worth a truly happy ending.
Interesting topic. Too many characters with similar names to keep track of. Amelia and Amanda. Candace and Carrie. I struggled to keep them straight. Jeremy is not only self centered but he got off too easy. An easy read with lots of interesting characters.
This book gave me such amazing feeling! This has been added to my rereads list! This type of stories are what we need in life when one feels low and not confident about himself! Self love, appreciation and values are the most important things of life! A must read for all !
This was a good romance-likeable characters, good pace for the most part. Jen is an interior designer. Her boyfriend dumps her & she posts on Facebook when she is drunk, which causes her some problems. I like how she owns up to the problems she creates & learns from them. There is a little drama but not too soap opera dramatic. There are parts alluding to sex but no graphic content. Very little if any swearing. Quite an enjoyable romance.
I loved the story and the writing style. The characters were well developed so that the story pulled you right in! This is the first book that I have read from this author but I plan to read more for sure!

Life rarely goes according to plan and that couldn’t be more true than in the third installment of the Unlucky in Love series by Stacey Wiedower. It’s amazing how many things go wrong in Jen’s life over the course of one week. Her fiancé dumped her (and turned out to be cheating on her), her boss steals her highest profile client, and she loses her dog to her former cheating fiancé. To top it all off, she takes to social media and manages to make an even bigger mess out of her life than it already was.
Jen was engaged to someone that made her happy on the surface, someone that looked good on paper. However, he was all about appearances and less about actually making her happy. Jen was too wrapped up in keeping up appearances that she didn’t realize that something wasn’t quite right in their relationship until it was over. Jen spent so much time trying to look happy that she forgot to focus on actually being happy. When a new man comes into her life accompanied with the sound advice of her best friend, can Jen finally find happiness in both her personal and professional life?
I loved the way Stacey made her novel extremely relevant to today’s social media crazy society. If you’re not on social media these days, you’re not as relevant as you could be. But when you’re on it, people who don’t care about you know all about your life and whereabouts. All it takes is one wrong post to turn your life upside-down and people you barely talk to come out of the woodwork to comment on your choices in life. It’s an unfortunate situation that has been created by our technology driven society and one that many of us try our best to avoid.
How to Look Happy was thoroughly funny and entertaining. Filled with drama, chaos and a few wrong turns, this novel proves that Wiedower’s writing just keeps getting better. 5 stars for this charming story filled with lessons on how to be happy in love and life.
I was given this novel to read and review before its release date (you can find the review on http://bookschocolateandwine.com/). Now all I can think is ‘I have a new favorite Chick Lit author!!!’ I have read her work before, Now a Major Motion Picture, and just adored it. I dove into this story with ample excitement and was definitely rewarded for the time I spent reading it. I finished the last half of the novel in one night, forsaking some sleep and never regretting it. This novel was funny, threw you punches you least expected and delivered well-rounded characters. The main character Jen was down to earth and entirely relate-able, especially for any woman who has suffered an extremely bad day like hers. The cliché bucket list storyline was anything but if you can believe it and gave the story a hilarious flare. I loved the relationships with her close friends, finding them to be her safety net and Guru’s. I need a good ‘supporting cast’ whenever I read a piece of work and these ones where just perfect. This was a story of growth and bravery as we bump along Jen’s now turbulent life, watching her attempt to pull herself up from the trenches to discover who is worth her time. I love the underlining of Hope thrown into the midst of the story and when it ends I’m delightfully pleased. This story was another home run for Stacey Wiedower. She now has a lifelong fan that is ready to jump into 30 Dates and await the reveal of her next novel!
This is the first book I’ve read in the Unlucky in Love series. (There are two previous books, 30 First Dates and Now a Major Motion Picture.) Although some of the characters tie in from previous books, this is definitely a series you don’t need to start from the beginning. But since I enjoyed this one so much, I think that you should.
Wiedower’s previous work as an interior designer is really showcased in this book. It was neat getting a peek into the business side, and her descriptions of the rooms and furniture were marvelous. I really enjoy designing rooms, and if I didn’t currently work at a library, this is a profession that I might have pursued.
Following along with Jen’s story and finding out which disaster in her life would take place next, kept me turning the page. Although Jen has a lot of not so great situations happen to her, she also has a lot of good things too. The balance between the good and bad made for a great read. If Jen just kept experiencing disaster after disaster, I think the book could have become very draining quickly.
This is a wonderful chick lit book, with a touch of romance, and lots of great friendships. I highly recommend it, especially for a beach read. Or since it’s getting cold where I live, snuggled under a blanket with a cup of something warm.
What do you do when your fiance dumps you and it looks like the company you work for is in trouble? Well you put on a happy face and "fake it 'til you make it" or you create a list of what you need to do to be happy.
This was a fun read, although at times you want to shake Jen and tell her to stop sticking her head in the sand in regards to her boss and the company she works for! But she has a lot of bad things happen at once (with a few good thrown in to balance it out) and it really is a learning and growing experience for her as a person.
I liked all of the characters (well not all, but most!) and my only "complaint" is in the dialogue when referencing one of Jen's friend, Amelia - she goes back and forth between Amelia and Mel (which is Amelia's pen name). At one point I thought that it was 2 different people because there was no consistency when identifying this character. I did have an ARC so hopefully this is corrected before the final printing. Thankfully this really only happens in 2 "scenes" in the book.
This is volume 3 in the Unlucky in Love series. It is the story of Jen Dawson. Jen is an interior designer who is on the fast track to success. She has a job at the best design firm in the city and a fiancé who is one of the most eligible bachelors in the city. She is surprised when her boss screws her over and her man dumps her on the same day. She doesn't think clearly after her world crashes down around her. She gets drunk and adds pain to her own misery when she posts a status on social media. Soon she finds herself in more hot water at work, her ex reappears when he should just disappear, and she uncovers shady business at work. Jen decides to make a comeback and get her life in order. She realizes that while she can put her life track, love is not something she can just plan. Loved Jen's finding out that she is in more control of her life than she realizes. I love how she deals with her boss, and her ex. I like how she comes into her own and finally starts enjoying life instead of planning it.
OMG. This book is so much fun! Ah, drunkbooking. Love that term! I could 100% relate with Jen all the way through this book. In an age where social media pretty much dominates everything, sometimes all you can do is laugh at your mishaps…and then try to get better, which is exactly what Jen does. It was so interesting for me to read about her interior design business as well, as that is an area that I am sadly quite terrible at, but it made me feel for a little bit that maybe I knew I thing or two about the business! Tight writing, plenty of laugh out loud moments, and even a light-hearted mystery was tangled in here. My kind of book!
This romantic comedy opens with a bang as the main character, Jen, is cheated out of an interior design job by her boss, and dumped by her fiancé on the same day. Unfortunately she compounds the problem by "drunkbooking" her situation on Facebook before passing out at home. The rest of the book details her attempt to turn things back around, starting with a checklist for reviving her professional career and rethinking her personal life. Although there were times that you wanted to shake her for avoiding dealing with her boss directly, in general she is an appealing character and it is fun to watch her slowly figure out what (and who) she really wants from life.
Cute story about an interior designer in Memphis who has settled. Settled for a fiance who doesn't truly make her happy. How sad is it that when he leaves and takes his dog as well, Jen is more upset about the dog? With personal relationships examined, Jen is surprisingly successful at work because she has insulated herself with work and ignored the office personnel.
Enjoyable and obviously well researched, there are characters that are so real that you can substitute your person's name and know the he/she is a definite ringer for the character. I have a "Nestor" friend and it is like the author knows him too! Fun read!
I was really excited to see another book by Stacey Wiedower and this turned out to be my favorite yet. Well-developed characters and a very entertaining and current premise made for a really fun reading experience. I found myself absorbed in the story -- a real page-turner that kept me reading into the night. I felt like I knew these characters who made me laugh, wince occasionally and tugged a few heartstrings. I highly recommend "How To Look Happy!"
Stacey Wiedower is a wonderful author and I now own three of her books. This book had me laughing a lot and kept me in suspense as to what was going to happen next. Amelia and Carrie from the two previous books also appear in this one with the main character, Jen, who is an interior designer. Poor Jen's day goes from bad to worse when her fiance dumps her fror another woman. You would think things couldn't get much worse than that, but keep reading!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was cute. I really enjoyed it. The characters were funny and easy to relate to. I chose this because I needed a "book set in your home state" for my reading challenge, and this is actually set in my hometown of Memphis, TN. It was great reading about the city in here. I could see all the locations in my head as I'm reading and it kind of made me homesick. It's part of a series, but you don't have to read the preceding books to understand anything. I have only read this one and had no problem with it. If you need a chick lit, this is a good one to get. Great job Ms. Wiedower!
****I received this book in exchange for an honest review**** This was a cute book. I loved some characters and hated some (only the ones you're supposed to hate). Definitely a good read. I'd love to read more by this author.
This is a DNF for now book for me. I might pick it up again. I think it is my mood right now but romance is just not doing it for me at the moment. I was getting frustrated with the characters not having conversations and I honestly didn’t want to be inside the main characters head anymore.
