The Revelations Study Set is essential for each participant. It includes engaging study "Questions" (with lesson summaries, home reading assignments, talk outlines, charts, diagrams, and more) and a set of suggested "Responses," which are needed for home preparation, small group discussion, and lesson reviews.
After twelve years as a Protestant pastor, Jeff returned to the Catholic Church under the guidance of Bishop Paul Dudley. His conversion story, one of the best known and inspiring stories of its kind, is chronicled in the best-selling book, My Life on the Rock.
Over the past several decades, Jeff has dedicated his life to developing The Great Adventure: A Journey through the Bible, a practical, interactive program that helps people read the “big picture” of God’s plan in Sacred Scripture and understand its meaning for their lives. The Great Adventure presents the entire sweep of the Bible in a way that is easy to understand and genuinely fun. Its unique Bible Timeline learning system has revolutionized Catholic Bible Study for hundreds of thousands of Catholics since 1995.
Jeff received his MA in Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville.
This was another insightful and inspiring Bible study with Jeff Cavins. For those unfamiliar with the Great Adventure Bible studies, they have a three pronged approach. Each lesson involves homework in the form of readings from the Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church and answering questions related to the readings in the workbook. In class, we discuss the homework and then watch a video presentation by Jeff Cavins. I like this format and always learn a lot, both about the material and about the people in my Bible study group. One might worry that the video presentation would be repetitive after doing and discussing the homework, but Jeff Cavins always builds on what was read, answered and discussed. The preliminary material gets ones thinking seriously about the Bible portion, in this case Revelation. Then Jeff enthusiastically gives additional material in his presentation. I highly recommend this ten week study of Revelation.
Jeff Cavins’ 10 lecture seminar “Revelation: the Kingdom Yet to Come” was released by Ascension Press in 2007 in dvd and audio formats.. This release also included a 122 page “Student Study Set” coauthored with Thomas Smith. The course is about the New Testament “Book of Revelations” written by St John the Evangelist around 86 AD when he was on the Island of Patmos which is located off the coast of present day Turkey in the Aegean Sea. According to Cavins, the Book of Revelation was not written using a linear history timeline. Rather, it was written as a “recapitulative history.” This unique historical perspective recounts events in a repeating cycle. Many of these events are linked to Old and New Testament writings. The “Revelation’s” recapitulations are intense, often forward looking, and use both symbols and allegories to anchor storylines about the apocalyptic end of the world. Cavins’ lectures also link Book of Revelations passages to church liturgies and prayer forms. (P)
