This book presents a new way of leading by looking to traditional waka navigators or wayfinders for the skills and behaviours needed in modern leaders. It takes readers on a journey into wayfinding and leading, discussing principles of wayfinding philosophy, giving examples of how these have been applied in businesses and communities, and providing action points for readers to practise and reflect on the skills they are learning.
3.5 rounded up, I almost wished this book weaved together real life narratives to express its ideas instead of expressing the ideas and then reinforcing them with vignettes but I still liked it
While I love the use of wayfinding as a metaphor and the knowledge that this book offers, I struggled to enjoy reading it. I suppose the academic tone made it feel a little more laborious and although it is such a powerful concept, it could be worded in a more engaging manner. I do however think it is a great book for anyone in a managerial role.
I admired how the authors brought together Māori tikanga with western academic research regarding leadership skills. I found the book to be inspirational in writing my own book, as it makes a great case for weaving in the wisdom traditions from our ancestors into our modern models of leadership.
After reading so many American books on leadership, it is so refreshing to read a leadership text grounded in NZ and Māori culture. I appreciated learning more about the wayfinding leadership approach and gaining a better understanding of a number of Māori concepts. Will definitely use and need to reread as feel like I only managed to absorb a small amount. So much there to learn!
Very interesting perspectives on the skills attitudes and behaviours of effective leadership using a pacific indigenous perspective. Lots to learn and challenging to the white western paradigm. Well worth reading and coming back to.
Truly inspiring leadership book that takes into account the whole ecosystem around us, encouraging us to pay more attention to all our senses and use our intuition.
