This is the book you need if you are interested in using PowerCLI with VMware. There's a lot of good stuff in here, and there's also a bundle of sample code available online which goes with the book, and has some great examples and loadable modules.

That said, I think the way it was organized was not really ideal. Rather than starting with some simple and useful examples, they try to follow a very linear progression of setting up esx hosts and guests, all using the CLI, rather than focusing on the most common (or easiest) operations first. Some of the things they cover probably don't need to be fully documented as far as the CLI goes - a simple pointer to the right cmdlet to use for a particular task would probably be sufficient.

It doesn't provide much information for someone new to PowerCLI, or new to scripting, so if you don't have much experience with either, you may want to look at books like Windows Powershell in Action.

Definitely one of those books that you reach for as a reference, vs. one that you'd want to read in anything remotely close to a linear fashion. The book's comprehensiveness is admirable, but I do think it maybe borders on being a bit too comprehensive -- describing things that even the authors say you're unlikely to want to do from the CLI.
