Raymond Carver'ın öykü külliyatının son halkası olan Azgın Mevsimler, yazarın farklı kitap ve dergilerde yayımlanan erken dönem öykülerini ilk defa bir araya getirmesinin yanı sıra tamamlanmamış romanı Augustine Defterleri'nden de bir kesit içeriyor.

About the author

Carver was born into a poverty-stricken family at the tail-end of the Depression. He married at 19, started a series of menial jobs and his own career of 'full-time drinking as a serious pursuit', a career that would eventually kill him. Constantly struggling to support his wife and family, Carver enrolled in a writing programme under author John Gardner in 1958. He saw this opportunity as a turning point.

Rejecting the more experimental fiction of the 60s and 70s, he pioneered a precisionist realism reinventing the American short story during the eighties, heading the line of so-called 'dirty realists' or 'K-mart realists'. Set in trailer parks and shopping malls, they are stories of banal lives that turn on a seemingly insignificant detail. Carver writes with meticulous economy, suddenly bringing a life into focus in a similar way to the paintings of Edward Hopper. As well as being a master of the short story, he was an accomplished poet publishing several highly acclaimed volumes.

After the 'line of demarcation' in Carver's life - 2 June 1977, the day he stopped drinking - his stories become increasingly more redemptive and expansive. Alcohol had eventually shattered his health, his work and his family - his first marriage effectively ending in 1978. He finally married his long-term parter Tess Gallagher (they met ten years earlier at a writers' conference in Dallas) in Reno, Nevada, less than two months before he eventually lost his fight with cancer.

Hikaye anlatıcılığı ile hikaye yazıcılığı arasındaki farkı her Carver okuyuşumda hissediyorum, o iyi bir yazıcı. Basit, düz, günlük olaylar ve insan ilişkileri hakkında yazıyor, anlatacak kadar yaşamıyor yazdıklarını. Furious Seasons and Other Stories shows Carver at the beginning — raw, a little lyrical, not yet pared down to the bone.
These stories feel like he's still figuring out his voice. The writing is denser, darker, a bit more "literary" than what he'd later be known for. But the signs are already there: the pauses, the tension in the ordinary, people hanging by a thread. It reads like a notebook of first tremors — not finished shapes, but something on the verge of becoming.

raymond carver gelmiş geçmiş en iyi öykücülerden biri. bu kitaptaki erken dönem öykülerinde de bunun izlerini görmek mümkün. sıradan insanların sıradan hayatlarından, çoğunlukla olay içermeyen birkaç sayfalık kesitlerin müthiş gücü. sade bir dille, abartısız, süslemesiz kurulan atmosferin büyüsü. doğal, sürprizsiz, şaşırtmacasız bir akışla varılan insanın ve hayatın karmaşası, karanlığı...bu ilk dönem öykülerinden ustalık eserlerine tekrar tekrar okumak lazım.

Notos'un bir sayısında bir öyküsünü okuyup tanıştığım Raymond Carver çok ilgimi çeken bir yazar değildi. Can Yayınları 7 TL kampanyasında bu kitabını görünce bir şans vereyim diyerek kitabı aldım. Kitapta yazarın ilk dönem öyküleri toplanmış. Kitabı iki üç oturuşta bitirdim. Kitap yazarın erken dönem öykülerini içermesine rağmen oldukça usta işi öyküler barındırıyor.

Yazarın dili kesinlikle duygusal değil. Ama öyküleri okuyup bitirdikten sonra insanın ruhunda bir duygusallık, hafif bir sızı bırakıyor bu dil. Yazarın ustalığı da burada sanırım. Duygusallığa kaçmadan okurda değişik, adsız duygular birakabilmesinde. Öykülerin alt katmanında ince bir mizah da göze batıyor.

Yazarın Fil ve Katedral öykü derlemelerini de hemen listeme ekledim. Öyküde farklı bir tat arayanlara kesinlikle tavsiye ederim. Ama öyle her öyküsünün başı sonu belli bir olay anlamadığını daha çok hayattan kesitler içerdiğini de ekleyeyim. Çehov tarzına yakın öyküler.

Published in 1977 by the Raymond Carver, “Furious Seasons and Other Stories” is a short story collection comprising of eight different stories. By now, you will find all of these stories in various collections that have been reprinted. Some readers consider the stories within this collection to be among Carver’s weaker ones and harder to follow than his classics. Personally, I only had an issue with one of the stories…. Unfortunately, it was the closer.

As with all my short story collection reviews, I rate each story individually and then calculate the average rating as the total rating for the book. But, I warn you…. Some of the reviews of each individual story includes a brief synopsis, which may or may not include a SPOILER. I write my short story reviews this way for future reference to remind me of which ones are worth the time re-reading and which ones are not. Although I do not ruin a good story by announcing any significant spoiler….. If you happen to come across one, it will be in a story that I hated and never intend on reading again. But, you can avoid potentially stumbling across a spoiler by skipping to the very bottom of the review, where it says “FINAL VERDICT”. That is where my overall review for “Furious Seasons and Other Stories” is listed. The stories within the collection include;

DUMMY – Narrated in the first person, a young adult recollects a disturbing memory of an incident that occurred when he was twelve-years-old…. An older gentleman, nick-named “Dummy”, was a friend of his fathers during that period and was often the butt of jokes throughout the town. Dummy lives in a small house and is married to a young smoke-show who is well-known to have “wandering eyes”…. He has a small pond behind his house and one day, decides to stock it with black bass. As a trout fisherman, the boy’s father is ecstatic at the thought of having exclusive rights (since he was Dummy’s only friend) to fish the stocked pond with his son. However, nearly immediately after Dummy receives the crated bass and releases them into his pond, he takes the form of a parental role over his fish to an unhealthy and borderline psychotic degree. This mental change carries with it, an obsession with protecting his fish by barricading the pond with an electric fence and distancing himself from everyone and everything, including his life-sucking wife.

As a bass fisherman myself, I loved this story. It was suspenseful and intriguing to see the changes in Dummy’s personality over a brief period and how his actions throughout the story affected his relationship with the boy’s father and others. His wife is a cold-hearted bitch who has a history of alleged affairs and that could have been a contributing factor in Dummy’s obsession with his new fish – the one thing in his life that he can control and rely on for happiness. When you take away the one thing in the world a person cares about you unleash a beast that fears no consequence.

Although the story is very simple and easy to follow, the ending was shockingly different from what I would expect out of Carver. This surprise was refreshing and added to my overall enjoyment. I would give this a 5 star rating and will definitely be reading it again down the road.

DISTANCE – This story will be recognized by Carver fans as also having the title, “Everything Stuck to Him”. However, that is a shorter version of “Distance”, due to Carver’s editor chopping it up like a mad scientist…. This one is about a father telling his daughter about what life was like when she was a baby and singles out one particular night when he and his wife were kept awake by her relentless crying. The story sums up the struggles of what young parents go through and the strain babies (and kids in general) can have on a relationship. It also capitalizes on the difference of parental approaches and reactions between the sexes. You have the traditional hysterical mother butting heads with the overworked, placating father. Although Carver doesn’t reveal much about the rest of their relationship, you get a sense that their bond is deep rooted and, like any marriage or relationship, has ups and downs to overcome. Overall, I would give this story a 3 star rating. I know a lot of people love this one, but I found it quite boring – being a heterosexual male.

THE LIE – Kind of short to provide a rating that would impact the overall review, so I won’t do it…. I’ll just say that it is an intriguing story. One I spent the majority of the time thinking I knew exactly what the lie was going to be….

SO MUCH WATER SO CLOSE TO HOME – This story is about a man named Stuart, who goes on a camping trip with his three buddies. Claire, Stuart’s wife, later learns from a newspaper article that Stuart reported the discovery of a dead girl to the police after their trip was over instead of immediately after the body was found. Claire becomes very disturbed by this news and believes her husband may be responsible for her death. Why else would he not report the body right away? Wouldn’t you have to be pretty sick to finish partying and having fun before calling the police? That is…. Unless you have something to hide…. This was a story full of tension and drama. Claire is the narrator and her thoughts and feelings on the matter are very well written and true to life. This is another one I would give a 3 star rating.

THE FLING – Narrated in the first person, a man reveals a story about his dad spilling his guys about cheating on his wife (the narrator’s mother) with a blonde bombshell, D-cup door-to-door salesman…. Although the dad’s story is a struggle for the man to listen to, the dad gets a lot off of his chest by spilling his guts. It was an affair for the ages…. Awesome, awesome story and completely unexpected from Carver. I would give this 5 stars any day of the week.

PASTORAL – This one is about a man named Harold, renting a cabin in solitude…. The dude may be divorced or a widow, but he is there by choice and there to fish, hunt deer, and do what men do. This was a simple, but lagging story. The environment was very detailed, though. Carver paints a perfect picture of the scene in which this story takes place. I would rate it 3 stars.

MINE – This is another one that was too short to review…. Carver sums up, in two pages, exactly how a bad marriage can (and often does) end and how children can sometimes be used as pawns out of spite…. One can only assume what caused the relationship to end and where the dude will be headed…. Good one, though. Nice and simple.

FURIOUS SEASONS – Dreary and descriptive weather makes the mood of this story quite depressing…. The writing is great in that aspect. It’s the plot that wasn’t really into. What I got out of it was; a dude’s wife is pregnant, the weather sucks balls, and he’s going hunting…. That’s about it. The story did not captivate my interest, but it was still very well written. Therefore, I gave it 2 stars.

FINAL VERDICT: I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. “Furious Seasons and Other Stories” barely missed the 4 star mark for me. The last story in the book really had a big impact on my overall rating…. Otherwise, the collection was terrific. But, if you are new to Raymond Carver I would suggest checking out one of his more popular collections before diving into this one. Not to say that this collection doesn’t stack up to “Elephant and Other Stories” or “Cathedral”…. But the writing in some of these stories is not considered Carver at his best and a lot of readers have not praised this collection as a result.

Geçen yıl Can Yayınları'nın indiriminden aldığım, ne yazarı ne de kitabı duymadığım bir eseri bu ay okumalarıma almak istedim. İncelediğim üzere, Raymond Carver; ülkemizde de oldukça sevilen bir yazarmış. Onu tanımamak da benim ayıbım olarak kalmış oldu. Yazarın, daha önce sevilen romanları da yine Can Yayınları tarafından okurlarıyla buluşmuş. Bu eser ise ölmeden önce yayınlattığı son derlemelerden biriymiş. İçerisinde birbirinden farklı hikayelerden oluşan bu kitapta genel anlamda günlük yaşam öyküleri ele alınıyor. Her ay bir öykü derlemesi okumayı titizlikle seçmeye çalışan ben de bu ayki hikaye kitabımı bu kitap olarak seçtim ve kitabı okudum.
Kitap üç kısımdan oluşuyor. İlk kısımda, kitaba da adını veren Azgın Mevsimler kısmı ve bu kısımda yine aynı ada sahip öykü var. İkinci kısım Ateşler adı altında dört tane öyküye sahip. Son kısım olan Diğer Öyküler'de ise on adet öykü daha var. Sanırım bunlar, yazarın başka öykü kitaplarından alınıp bu şekilde birleştirilmiş. Yazarın öykücülüğü hiç de fena değildi bana göre. Günlük yaşam öyküleri okumayı sevmiyorum diyemem ama çok da zevk aldığımı söyleyemem açıkçası. Özellikle, bu hikayelerin hiçbirinde ciddi anlamda bir olay ya da durum olmadı. Yani, buradaki karakterlerin hayatlarının bir kesitine tanık olup çıkıp gittik her hikayeden. İlk bir kaç hikaye beni sonlarıyla şaşırtsa da geneli çok da iyi kurguya sahip olmayan hikayelerdi ama anlatım yönünden çok kuvvetli öyküler okuduğumu söylemem gerekiyor. Alkolik olduğu için karısı tarafından terkedilip hayata tutunmaya çalışan adamın öyküsünü anlatan "Çıra" benim favori hikayelerimden biri oldu. Komşuluk ilişkisini güzel anlatan ve dostluğa tanıklık ettiğimiz "Ne Görmek İsterdiniz" öyküsünü de yine sevdiğimi söylebilirim. Sonu hüzünlü biten, yine komşuluk ilişkisi kıvamındaki "Rüyalar" adlı öyküyü ve biraz daha alt psikolojinin ürünü olarak görebileceğimiz "Vandallar" hikayeleri benim bu derlemedeki en sevdiğim öyküler oldu. Bunlar dışında "Kulübe", "Harry'nin Ölümü", "Tutkunlar", "Kıpkırmızı Elmalar", "Bana İhtiyacın Olursa Ara" öykülerini de sevdiğimi söyleyebilirim. Bunun dışında kalan hikayeler ise beni o kadar da etkilemedi.
Az önce de dediğim gibi, hikayeler genelde çok da değişik şeylerin gerçekleşmediği, veya iyi derecede psikolojik, durum anlatan hikayelerden değildi. Sıradan insanların sıradan hayatlarında yaşadıkları sıradan olaylara ya da durumlara tanıklık edip bir sonraki hikayeye geçerek okudum neredeyse tüm öyküleri. Bu yüzden de etkileyici bir öykü kitabı olduğunu söyleyemem. Fakat yazarın kalemini gerçekten çok beğendim. Güzel kurgulara sahip olduğunu duymuştum bu kitabı okurken, yazarı araştırdığım sıralarda. O yüzden romanlarını da okumayı düşünüyorum çünkü kalemi gerçekten hiç de yabana atılacak bir kalem değildi. Bu yazımla çok daha güzel işlerin çıkmış olduğunu düşünüyorum açıkçası.
Farklı öykü okumayı düşünen insanlar belki bu kitaptan sıkılabilir fakat sizi çok yormayacak, normal hayat hikayeleri okumak istiyorsanız belki bir şans verebilirsiniz. Benim için 3.5 puanlık bir kitaptı bu kitap.

Carver conseguiu dar um início mais que perfeito para este conto: em poucas linhas introduz o ambiente, leva o leitor a imaginar uma protagonista criança e com mais alguma frases muda toda a expectativa da narrativa. A ambientação do conto muda, assim como as definições da personagem principal. Trata-se, na verdade, de um homem adulto. Entretanto, essa imagem de infantilidade fica na mente do leitor de forma a dar fluidez para o desenvolvimento dessa característica no texto. Fica óbvio que Farrel tem questões mal resolvidas em sua infância. É sobre seu pai e a violência que o garoto o presenciou exercendo? Ou sobre a irmã e a estranha tensão sensual entre eles? Me pergunto muito sobre o início desse abuso entre eles, veio por parte da irmã? Farrel foi abusado ou é um abusador? A pergunta importa (e muito), mas no final o resultado é o mesmo: ele cresce para se tornar um adulto com a mente de uma criança traumatizada, uma mente infantil e machucada. Ele não consegue lidar com a perda da infância, não se conecta à esposa pois está preso em primeiro lugar à sua irmã. Onde está o pai? Ver o sacrifício da ovelha faz com ele sinta tanto ódio pelos patos? Afinal, são apenas patos. O que leva o protagonista a usar os tiros nos patos como válvula de escape da culpa seu crime? Por que não luta para se defender, para esconder o corpo? Talvez porque seja apenas uma criança lutando para se entender, lutando para lidar com os traumas pelos quais passou.

Pensamento extra: acho mais provável que a irmã seja a abusadora. Caso o assédio fosse por parte do protagonista, ele não a mataria quando soubesse da gravidez. Ou será que a ideia de um neném, uma criança, o assustava tanto assim? Afinal, ele mesmo era sua própria infantilidade.
Pensamento extra 2: será que Farrel sentiu culpa pelo que fez? Não há nada que indique que seu estado nervoso seja pelo crime que cometeu ou pela morte da irmã. Ele parece estar mais angustiado é com suas questões internas. Então, o que sentiu? Por que não alívio? Culpa? Medo? Satisfação?

Carver öykülerinde benzer motifler bulmak mümkün: Eksiltilmiş karakterlerin ilişki problemleri, içki, sigara bağımlılıkları; mekan tercihinde arabada geçen diyaloglar, misafir oturmasında karşılıklı sohbet eden iki çift, banliyö evinin bahçesinde karşı evde olup biteni gözleyenler, sülünler ve tavus kuşları... "Katedral"de üç bomba gibi öykü bulmak mümkündü, burada ise bir gömlek aşağı 4 öykü var not düşebileceğim: Başarılı geri dönüşlerle anlatılan "Harry'nin Ölümü", Yukarıda bahsini geçtiğim temalardan çift ziyaretini konu alan "Ne Görmek İsterdiniz?", komşu evi ve yine ölüm temalı "Rüyalar" ile çocuklu, boşanmış çiftimizin yeni sevgililerini bekleterek bir araya geldikleri yaz macerası "Bana İhtiyacın Olursa Ara". Öykü sayısı 15 olunca bu rakam epey düşük kalıyor kitaptan toplu olarak keyif almaya. Neyse bitiş lezzetli ve en iyi öykü en sona kalmış.

Carver külliyatı kütüphanede ya hep ya hiç tutulacak cinsten. Kitapların biri diğerine tercih edilir şekilde değil de bir arada tutmak, okutturmak, hele de yeni baskıların günbegün azaldığı ülkemiz yayıncılığında daha kalıcı bir tercih sanki. Diğer iki kitabına göz gezdirmiştim ancak onları da tekrar okuyacağım. Umarım bir gün bu külliyatın da bir gün tek ciltte toplu bir basımı yapılır.

I haven't read all of Raymond Carver's work, but of the short story collections I have, Furious Seasons is easily the most nature-based and descriptive in that regard. These certainly aren't my favorite Carver works (and it's easy to see why this is considered a lesser collection of his), but his descriptions really do put you in the environment...

What worked about “Will You Please Be Quiet Please?” Was the brevity of the stories. In this one the stories were longer. And the title story, “Furious Seasons” was long and confusing, and I’m still not quite sure what happened. Still an interesting read though.

For any Carver fan or student, _Furious Seasons_ is a fascinating look at his early work, including longer versions of So Much Water So Close to Home and Dummy (and others). Carver was not always the essential minimalist, and FS helps to chart his evolution as an artist.

What a prize. Great stories. Early Carver stories. Wasn't always the minimalist. Some of these stories were new to me and they are the prizes. Furious Seasons was tough to following.
