Kevin Cogan fans beware! This is not the book for you.
In days of push-to-pass, stage racing, and the hairless, teenage millionaire jockies that pass for race drivers, "A.J." is throwback to a bygone era long since past. It is not just the amazing story that is the life of AJ Foyt or his naturally colorful style that make this book outstanding; it is that such a work couldn't or wouldn't be written today. AJ Foyt curses; he calls out fellow drivers by name and in wickedly entertaining detail; he relays bawdy tales of felonies, fights, and fornication; he belittles sanctioning bodies, big corporate sponsors, and the media alike. Today there are very few living racers in North America that would have clout to do that and - as Foyt himself might say - not one that has the balls. And with the current climate of declining attendance, shrinking sponsorship dollars, increasingly embarrassing marketing gimmicks, never has there been a more urgent need for someone - literally anyone - to say what's on his mind...
That was an excellent book. I learned a lot about racing and I found A.J. to be a very inspiring person. He made me want to get out there and accomplish something big. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago!
