"Retired Mafia" which I won through Goodreads/Giveaways and the fourth book in the "Mafia" series takes the reader into the intriguing and sinister world of the Ferreti Family, a powerful crime syndicate in Brooklyn. This captivating story begins fifteen years after Nora Patrick-Quinn dissolves her Mafioso Family, escaping with her son to give him the semblance of a normal life so that he would have choices that she didn't growing up. But after all this time Tony Ferreti the man she's loved since she was seventeen has finally hunted her down at the college where she teaches. Furious that Nora's kept him from his son for all these years yet still deeply in love with the woman he's never stopped hunting for, Tony tries to put his anger aside and begin life anew with her and their son Travis.
Trusting that Eduardo Ferreti (Eddie the Hammer), his wife Daniela and his brothers will keep their word and do nothing to harm Nora, the story heats up when Tony coerces her into attending a Thanksgiving celebration at his Family's home. But having been a Mafia Boss Nora knows the penalty for walking away from the syndicate. Hoping that Tony's love and her secret can stem the vendetta against her Nora returns with Travis to face her old enemies only to find that their hatred runs deep and death may be closer than she thinks.
Well-written and mesmerizing Nikki Kitchen weaves an emotionally-charged plot after the man Nora has loved since a teenager reunites with her and her son Travis after fifteen years. Frightened by his sudden appearance in their lives but yearning for Tony to know his son she agrees not to run. Warring with the turbulence of his emotions after being abandoned and robbed of Travis's childhood they begin making a life together although their lifestyle is far from normal.
Quickly intensity and suspense builds when Nora faces a confrontation with Tony's family at Thanksgiving. Knowing the penalty for her desertion even though Tony trusts his parents promises that she will go unpunished, Nora's faces the grave and bloody consequences of that lie when they corner her in a room in their home. The tension never diminishes as Nora's secret protects her from their brutality and Tony learns a valuable lesson. Spied on, hunted by members of other Familys, Nora stays one step ahead of death as the plot progresses quickly and smoothly to a shocking ending that begs for another book.
In an enthralling plot Nikki Kitchen has created characters who are complex and unforgettable like Nora Patrick-Quinn who's smart , stubborn and highly capable, giving up a life in organized crime to give her son a chance at a normal life. A tough lady who has a softer, fragile side to her nature she now leads a simpler life clinging to her religion and sustained by the love of her son and friends. Antonio (Tony) Ferreti, the love of her life who's doggedly searched for her and their son for fifteen years is an accountant, keeping track of the financial books for his Family. Trusting his parents he's shocked by his father's lies and brutality, protecting Nora and Travis against their viciousness and becoming understandably paranoid. Fifteen year old Travis their level-headed son is clever, dutiful and moralistic when faced with his mother's dangerous criminal past, her affair with Tony and the violence of his father's Family. It is these personalities and a score of others that add spice, high-energy and drama to a fascinating plot.
I loved "Retired Mafia" and after a small taste of Nora and Tony's mesmerizing story have returned to the first book in the series while I wait for the exciting finale. The only criticism I have is with the cover which wouldn't have attracted me to this novel and doesn't do the story justice.
I have again found this book a great read. I am very surprised at the turn of events this story has taken. I never dreamed she would have to take over the Family, much less offer to do it. This will wipe all she has done to keep her son from this life. I cannot wait until the next book. Great job.
