The story of the part played by the Yankees in Nova Scotia during the American Revolution. His Majesty's Yankees is a thrilling and romantic adventure story.
This book sat apparently untouched in my parents' library while I was growing up. In my teens, I decided to pull it out and read it. I’m not sure anyone else in my family ever did. The book turned out to be far better than I was expecting.
This book did win the Governor General’s Award when it was published, and if you can get access to a copy and Canadian history is something that interests you, this book should be well worth your while.
Amazing story to read, based on history, and grounded in my home province of Nova Scotia. Sometimes felt like a long read, thick with descriptive narrative, but the combination of story, characters, excellent writing, and history left me with a rich reading experience. I'm glad to have stumbled upon this book by chance.
I read this book for our meeting with the Loquacious Compendium Book Club in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia in June. It was a well-done historical fiction about the early history of Nova Scotia (1770s). I had never known that Nova Scotia was almost considered one of the original American colonies. It was a good mixture of history, military battles, the Bostons, and romance. I learned a lot and it was fun discussing it with the Nova Scotia people.
Early read in my young adulthood, inspiring a love of historical fiction, and a novel I have reread more than once. Truly fact-filled, action and adventure in the forests and harbours and towns of Nova Scotia. Highly recommended.
