Starting in 1928, the families who live in a big farmhouse near Dusty Corners, Alabama are plagued and tormented by paranormal phenomena down through the years. In fact, the entire community seems to be cursed and haunted. But why? An atmospheric, old-fashioned ghost story that follows each family as they fight for survival and try to unravel the mystery of a fogbound spirit.
I'm a former reporter/editor and some of the novels I have at Amazon.com were previously published for the early e-book market. When the publisher went of business, I retained copyright.
I'm a widow of ten years, have no children but do have two dogs. I live in the Southern USA; most of my work is set in this region.
This was a really well written book. I came across this book while searching Kindle Unlimited and decided to give it a chance. It was a surprisingly good read.
Three families over time have bought a house. Each family experiences strange things in and around the house. Each family also suffers some bad fates. The truth behind the house and the ghost within is soon told in the end. A restless soul lost, but not forgotten, wants its story told.
I found the book to be very good. It was very suspenseful and kept me guessing through the whole book. Who is this spirit and what do they want? You eventually find out at the end, but the story as a whole is very creepy and suspenseful. I absolutely loved the way the book ended. It was a well fitting ending.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were utterly believable and I felt able to relate to their lives, as well as being fascinated by their stories. The plot was well constructed and this was a ghost story of the highest order. Well recommended.
There are some excellently written scenes in this. Some genuinely unsettling moments which really add to the story. However, some of the fore-shadowing is really lazily done - 'He had no idea that this would be...' or something similar is a quite regular chapter ending. It really feels like this would have been better if it had been more effectively structured - the chronological structure isn't that effective when the first part of the story is the least interesting. Also, the way in which the story is sorted out seems particularly light-weight.
There's something really good in this story and Cara Swann is a very descriptive writer. But it's let down by how it's put together plus certain things about the denouement just don't make a lot of sense.
A very good story, told by the people who built the large home down to the family that were the last occupants. The women in the story all had one thing in common, they knew that their home was haunted, They had either heard or seen evidence for themselves, but the men in their lives believed each of their wives were day dreaming, hallucinating but the women knew what they heard and saw and had to learn to live through it.
Cara Swann is a fine storyteller! Kept me wrapped in the suspense and waiting for the climax ending. I was not disappointed ! Loved the time frame and imagery brought the old south to life with each page .will be purchasing many more ! Highly recommend this book.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
This novel chronicles the story of several families who live in a grand farmhouse on a homestead in Alabama from 1928 to present day, and the tragic and paranormal events that happen to them there.
The spirit reaches out to some residents while lashing out at others, sometimes even killing them.
One resident, Annette, feels a connection with the spirit after she and her husband James buy the house upon his retirement. She first feels the presence in the cellar, just as past owners of the place had, and later at the ancient tree on the property that eerily never seems to change over time. Instead of being frightened out of the house, she feels compelled to see why the presence is there and why it might be reaching out to her.
Through a series of events, the spirit begins communicating with her, but it also begins to hurt her husband, James. It says that it's doing it to "help her" and because it needs her to "tell its story". She agrees to do everything she can to tell the spirits story as long as it agrees to leave her husband alone.
Eventually, through a series of dreams, Annette learns of the spirit's history, and tells a story that is generations old -- lost, unresolved, and tragic.
I read this book as part of my #yearofindiewomen.
This was a solid three and a half stars for me. I liked this story, and I'll probably read more by Swann. The pacing was nice in this. It kept me reading long past when I should have been sleeping, and the resolution of the story was so very sad. It's a tragic and embarrassing reality of American history that we cannot ignore. If there were any reason for a spirit to haunt a place, it would surely be for the reasons in 'Fogbound'.
My only real criticism of this book was that I didn't understand why the spirit (I leave the spirit unnamed in this review as to avoid spoilers) hurt certain people in the story, particularly Annette's husband (why was it trying to help her? What point did that serve?), Anna who also only seemed to want to help him. Perhaps I missed something, but I just didn't get it. I get why it would have been vengeful in general, but why to those specific people and not everyone else? That's the reason I've given this book three and a half stars rather than four.
Rating this was hard. I was engrossed in the story right up until the end but, at the same time, I was very frustrated with it.
When the mystery of the haunting is "solved" it isn't really solved. It is pretty obvious from early on who the ghost is and almost as obvious is the why and how. But there is never any explanation (that I caught on to) about why the ghost hurts certain people but not others. That was the true mystery to me and we are left with no answers.
So I enjoyed it but I am ultimately left unsatisfied - right at the end. Plus it makes absolutely no sense that the ghost's story is told to someone, in dreams, through the eyes of someone else. Does that sentence even make sense? The person who tells the story is quite likely dead by the time of the telling, but is not a ghost, so I'm not sure why the author chose that route. It would have made more sense for the ghost to tell its own story. *is left feeling confused*
Really good ghost story. Begins in 1928 in small town in Alabama. Tells the story of a haunted house and the three families who lived there and all the misfortunes that befell each family who made their home in this house. They tie up the hauntings and the cause in the last few chapters. I loved this book because it followed the normal guidelines of a haunting. Plus, I loved the time period.
This was an awesome read from start to finish. I truly enjoyed this book. The different characters from year to year made the book that much more intriguing. I've been disappointed with so many of the books I've chosen because of someone else's review. I am very picky and hard to please when it comes to Scary and I like the creepy stuff. Great job Cara Swann. Reader's I recommend this book. kozettekaysmith
Not really that bad. Interesting but pretty vanilla. I did get a chuckle at one of the married characters comment. Paraphrasing, it's gonna be cool tonight, in the 60's, better turn the heat up to 68. Great Godfrey, here in the Northeast, that's a nice day!! Wasn't a bad mystery but it took so long to get to it I was getting bored.
This book was fantastic! It was scary and intense and kept me reading til the end. I didn't want to put it down even when was so tired lol. I just finished it & it almost brought tears to my eyes and gave me chills all over. Now on to the next book of ghostly suspense...
Story well written. Couldn't put down. Story has a bit of everything . Excellent writing . Couldn't find any errors or misspelled words. Scary, spooky and suspense. Very talented writer. Loved the story. Will be one of my favorites. If you love Suspense, ghost stories, bumps in the night. Then I strongly recommend. Two thumbs up for author.
I felt this book failed to deliver on atmosphere. Another book that had too much irrelevant detail of everyday life that did nothing to move the story along or add depth to the characters. Sadly this form of story means that characters are not around long enough in order to to get to know them (only Anna had the potential to develop into someone interesting).
This was a very detailed book....it really was a pleasure to read. Even though it dealt with ghosts, there was a storyline behind it. It was hard to accept the deaths that the ghost caused because it was against innocent people but it did not take away from the story. Definitely recommend.
I like the way the book gave the story of each of the families that live there. Pretty good descriptions of rural Alabama. I'm old enough to remember country living, picking cotton and running through the corn fields to visit my friends on the other side of it. Swinging on a giant tree swing, those are fond memories. Thanks for taking me back.
As other reviews have pointed out, something's don't add up, why the spirit of a good man would harm innocent people. Couldn't really understand how Brody managed to tell Saws story. Also was a bit disappointed with the letter Mary gave Brody, telling him to not open until he was on the train, wasn't mentioned again! But still quite enjoyable, I read till the end.
This would be a really good campfire tale for frightening the young and entertaining the old. The story flows well, though characters are a little stiff and predictable.
Once I began reading this story I couldn't stop. It's a wonderful page turner that keeps you glued to every page to the very end. If you love a good ghost story Fogbound is one you want to read.
Love the story. Well written with a good storyline and characters that kept me intrigued till the end. One of the best ghost stories I've read in quit a while and an intriguing mystery as well.
This book grabbed me from page one and never let go. Wonderful characters descriptions so vivid you can see them in your mind as you read wonderful ending
I did enjoy this book, I do love supernatural tales especially based on a haunted house theme. I liked the way it was set out spanning over the years with different families having to deal with the restless sprit
