Just finished it and loved it, it reminds me of the old black and white ScFi movies from the 50s and 60s that I love to watch even though I'm only 39 years old, you know the old Sc-Fi movies that our parents grew up watching, I could actually see this as one of those types of movies and I would have definitely would have watched it.it has all of the aspects of one , a small town , a natural destater , a high school romance, giant Prehistoric monsters, and of course human vs the monsters,. If you love those B type movies from the 50s and 60s you need to read this .
Very creepy read. The description of the scorpions really makes your skin crawl. The characters are very well written. The idea of heavy metal teenagers and a very few adults taking on these prehistoric scorpions and doing it well is awesome. The love story with Jonathan and Gabriella is sweet and the friendship of the guys is good. Jonathan's father dying right after saving his son was bittersweet but more realistic than if he survived the chaos. I would recommend this book to any adult reader that enjoys well written horror stories.
Some aspects of the book were really great and others I found lacking. Often it felt like all the characterisations were looked at from the outside and felt a bit disconnected from the persons themselves. However, the dialogue was often quite funny and felt real.
Overall it was a bit uneven, but the scorpions were cool.
If this had been a screenwrite it would have been good and if a movie, awesome!
Mike Cook is a talent! He has masterfully crafted a high-velocity thrill ride of a story! Jonathan, a Nevada high school student, stumbles upon a very terrifying secret. Giant scorpions have made their way to the surface from the depths of the Earth and are wreaking havoc across the land. Jonathan and his friends attempt to inform the police, but the police are skeptical. It is up to Jonathan, his friends and his uncle to take on the scorpions. Mike Cook does a great job of bringing the story's fast-paced action sequences to life. His descriptions of the scorpions and the havoc they wreak are detailed and very vivid. The characters are well-written. They are very charismatic and have great chemistry. The story is well served by the humor that is periodically injected into the story. Aside from being a very exciting story, it is often very funny! I highly recommend it!
This book was awesome and had me thoroughly captivated from the start. It also made my skin crawl and gave me chills, not to mention having me just about in tears when a significant character dies. The author definitely knows how to bring the horror as well as tug on the ol' heartstrings. The characters were interesting and engaging written into a very well constructed and extraordinary read. Wow! :)
Creature Feature!! I loved loved loved this book!! Very exciting and intense, the kind of story that keeps you reading because you feel like you could miss something.
