This is a sensual romance (may have explicit love scenes, but not erotic level)
Lily Tucker is down on her luck and considering a career strutting her stuff around a pole when she gets a call about an unexpected inheritance. It’s every girl’s dream—her estranged grandmother’s kicked the bucket, leaving Lily a house on a private island in Wonderland.
When she reaches Wonderland, though, she finds a house that’s more like a hovel, a job waiting tables at the local diner, and a crime wave that seems to begin and end with Lily herself. Sexy deputy Toby can’t decide if he should arrest her or drag her off to bed—until it becomes clear that Lily’s not the criminal. She’s the target.
Lily Tucker is living in Los Angeles when her grandmother dies leaving all of her estate in small town Wonderland to her. Lily quits LA and moves into her new home hoping to escape her troubles. But many problems for Lily arise in this small town - how can she cope?
I enjoyed reading Lily in Wonderland. This is a character driven novel and WOW! - what a character Lily truly is, she has bucket loads of attitude. Lily is loud, outspoken and very, very bold. Lily is not a quiet plain Jane, she is the very opposite. Lily is very quick witted and very sharp with her tongue.
I liked this story which had lots of emotion and feeling. It mixes life struggles with some crime and a budding romance. The dialogue between the characters paints a full picture for the reader…
“Do you have to dress like that?” he asked, following her swinging hem down the dirt path. If he couldn’t drag his eyes from her, no one else would be able to either. “Payday is a week away, and I’m living off my tips.” Lily explained. “Don’t blame me. Blame the male mentality for throwing money at tits and ass.”
...Although there is some sex in this story, there is nothing to offend your grandmother. The romance has a nice tone to it…
He missed sex, but even more, he missed the touch of someone else’s skin, the warmth of another’s breath, the comfort of not being alone in this world. Toby wanted someone to come home to, eat with and watch television with. Going to sleep and subsequently waking up with a familiar partner was what he longed for.
… I enjoyed reading Lily in Wonderland and found it bright, entertaining and similar to those times when you watch a very good guest on a television chat show. Lily will brighten up any room and it was a joy to read a little more of her tale each day. I think Lily in Wonderland is a GOOD 4 star read and oh, not forgetting there is a little dog too, called of all names, Pee Wee.
I received this book free through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. A great book. I loved this one. Well written and developed. A page turner for sure. What more could you ask for in a book; there is romance, mystery, love scene (which are very tastefully written and not too risky), and a man in uniform helping safe Lily. You will fall in love with the main characters. If you like romance books I highly recommend reading this one and if you don't think you like romance books I suggest that you give this one a chance as you may find a new genre you do in fact like.
Had a bit of Susan Elizabeth Phillips (who I love) small town craziness feel to it.
Lily, a down on her luck girl, inherits a house in the small town of Wonderland. She quickly leaves L.A in a cloud of dust and hoping to leave her troubles behind. But of course they follow.
Lily, is a funny, slutty, sarcastic, sassy, sweet, paranoid, potty mouthed, rude recovering addict. A perfect match for Wonderland's straight laced deputy, Toby Dodd.
So when she sets her sights on him, he really hasn't got a chance.
Very sassy and laugh-out-loud funny--very much in the tradition of Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I LOVED the lead characters--both flawed, but extremely human and smart and deeply sympathetic. Great quirky small town, smart suspense subplot, very witty writing. I can't believe more people haven't found this book yet. Kelly Fitzpatrick is one to watch!!
Not done yet but want to write this down before I forget:
1-The H/h relationship. In the books I usually read, the strong willed heroine wants nothing to do with the Hero. He pursues her. I get tired of the same thing after a while but now I know why it works so well. Turn the tables around, and if not done correctly, you get an irritating heroine. Lily, uncertain of staying with Toby, even though she finally "caught" him is infuriating. Also, saying I love you after 5 seconds of knowing each other is not my thing.
2-The plot is moving very slowly. It picks up a bit and then drags along. There are some unnecessary scenes that could be completely eliminated.
3-The sex. Yes, it's there, which I appreciate since I find novels w/o them .... boring (unless it's a FANTASTIC book), needs more detail. Fade to black scenes do not work for me. This is not Twilight.
4-The murder mystery. I couldn't care less about the murdered brothers. Seems 2 pieces of trash were removed & the only person who really cares about solving the murders is Toby.
5- The humor. I do like snarky commentary, especially from the heroine, but it seems Lily just lays it on thick EVERYWHERE.
