"You know, you wonder how much any of us really knows anyone else, even those very closest to us" says George Mason, the father of a young woman found murdered in her basement. It's a common theme in this British police procedural where many of the characters have perfected the art of presenting an acceptable facade to the world.
This is book #2 featuring DI Madeleine Fox of the Met's Major Incident Team (following "Rough Justice"). Maddy is 34, single & good at her job. Sure, there are days she'd like to smack colleague DS Terry James who seems to be going through puberty again. Maybe he'll get it right this time. And they're all still getting used to a new boss, Greg Mills.
The team is tested when they arrive at the scene of a woman murdered & left displayed in a room tricked out for S&M games. Seems she was living a double life...attractive public relations executive by day, dom/sub mistress by night.
In alternating chapters we meet James Carlton, an urbane politician who has it all. Good looks, trophy wife, teenage daughter & beautiful home in an exclusive part of London. But he's a fraud. He knows he should be grateful for his privileged life but can't help tempting fate occasionally. It's all about the thrill of the risk.
The story continues on 2 fronts: Maddy & her team as they investigate 2 murders & following James as his world begins to unravel. We are privy to more facts than the characters as the parallel story lines develop then begin to merge.
I really enjoyed this. It's tightly plotted with fleshed out characters & lots of action. The opening scene grabs you & even pacing keeps you turning the pages.
Maddy's a likeable, original character. Instead of the standard portrayal of a female cop as strident & bitchy, she comes across as capable of holding her own on the job but not immune to self doubt. Friends are settling down & popping out babies, other relationships are falling apart & Maddy starts to wonder about some of the choices she's made.
Sections dealing with her personal life round out her character but never overwhelm the main thrust of the book which is the criminal investigation. However, I did subtract half a star due to the ending & a decision she makes about a relationship. It was just plain dumb & until then, I really thought she was smarter than that.
All in all, a quick well written book that will hold your attention. Should appeal to fans of Peter James, Alex Gray & Brenda Chapman.

O carte interesantă care mi-a ținut setea de lectură trează și m-a făcut să îmi doresc să aflu finalul în ciuda programului meu foarte încărcat. Este prima mea întâlnire cu acest autor și pot spune că nu mi-a displăcut stilul său de a scrie impregnat cu puțină filozofie, umor și descrieri foarte bine realizate ce au făcut din această poveste polițistă o lectură plăcută.
Acest roman are în prim plan povestea demonilor din noi care se hrănesc cu plăcerile trupești, uneori considerate anormale. Însă ce se întâmplă când acești demoni sunt amenințați că vor fi dezvăluiți lumii? Normal... Apare panica și dorința de a disimula totul...
Fox este o polițistă, frumoasă și curajoasă care încearcă să afle misterul unei crime petrecute în centrul Londrei. Victima este o prostituată de lux care obișnuia să joace rolul de sclavă sexuală, deși provenea dintr-o familie înstărită și nu avea probleme financiare, însă modul în care a fost ucisă lasă mari semne de întrebare...
Ancheta este foarte dificilă pentru că apar elemente care se leagă de lumea politică și totul devine un joc periculos pentru participanți. Întotdeauna frica, mita și "relațiile" au creat un vad bun pentru infracțiunile acoperite la nivel înalt.
Oarecum, acest roman m-a făcut să văd o față ciudată a umanității... Serios acum... Cum să îți placă să fii biciuit?! 🙄
Una peste alta, recomand acest roman și va asigur că nu criminalul mi-a fost greu de aflat ci modul în care s-a petrecut totul... Finalul este o lecție de morală, in care se arată că totul se plătește în viață... Din păcate pentru o clipă de plăcere, oameni nevinovați, dragi ție sunt afectați și pot plăti chiar cu prețul vieții!
"Am crezut că dacă-i fac pe plac laturii mele întunecate, măcar o dată, va fi de ajuns, că se va sătura, dar nu era decât auto-amăgire.
Mai târziu, chiar am încercat să mă conving că eram stăpân pe situaţie, că o singură dată aveam să mă mai întorc, după care totul se termina. Însă nu s-a terminat niciodată. Eram un drogat al propriei perversiuni aparte. Nu puteam scăpa de ea. Ştiai, fireşte că ştiai că te va vătăma. Dar întotdeauna ţi-e destul faptul că nu te-a vătămat astăzi."

Cândva, fusese foarte frumoasă. Şi încă mai era, dacă ai fi putut privi dincolo de paloarea vineţie-ceroasă a pielii, ochii cu pleoapele pe jumătate lăsate, clemele de pe sfârcuri şi limba scoasă. Totuşi, oamenii din subsol, aparent dezumanizaţi de către salopetele lor albe şi concentrarea captivată cu care priveau prin microscoape, n-o luau în seamă. Trupul ei neînsufleţit devenise aproape irelevant pentru ei. Numai drăgălaşa fotografă de la S.0.3, cu părul lung şi negru ca abanosul strâns la spate într-o coadă-de-cal, părea preocupată de ea, imortalizând-o din toate unghiurile, ca o paparazza nesăţioasă. Singurul sunet din cameră era sfârâitul servomotorului electric din aparat.
Detectivul Sergent Terry James îi făcu cu ochiul. Fotografa nu-i dădu atenţie, luând o imagine de aproape cu încheietura legată a mâinii femeii.
Fox stătea lângă colegul ei, în dreptul mesei de tortură. Devenise aproape indiferentă în faţa morţii, dar crimele sexuale continuau s-o stânjenească, provocându-i şi acum acea senzaţie de crispare greţoasă în abdomen. Ceilalţi, deşi erau profesionişti la fel ca ea, îi evitau privirea. Acele fapte le inspirau o anume stare proprie numai lor, înfricoşător de primordială, poate fiindcă ura care le motiva era concentrată nu asupra unei singure persoane, ci împotriva întregului sex pe care-l reprezenta. Făcea ca prin străfundurile minţii să forfotească mici umbre; aşa, îi era mai uşor să interpreteze greşit privirile dure ale bărbaţilor, să uite că erau de partea ei.
― Ce-avem aici, T.J.? întrebă ea.
James ― pe care toţi cei din brigadă îl numeau T.J. ― ridică din umeri.
― Un asasinat S şi M elementar, răspunse el. Întinsă şi moartă.
― Pentru numele lui Dumnezeu, murmură Fox, cu un nod în gât, făcând un pas înapoi.
T.J. zâmbi..
Chiar în acel moment, sună telefonul.
În cameră încetă orice mişcare. Echipa criminalistică, medicul legist, Pakula, chiar şi fotografa, priviră spre telefonul alb şi zvelt de pe masă, lângă bancheta tapiţată unde zăcea fata moartă, un instrument din secolul douăzeci care distona cu decorul medieval contrafăcut al subsolului.
Fox aşteptă să intre în funcţiune robotul, dar acesta părea să fi fost închis. Acest lucru i se părea foarte curios, în circumstanţele date.
― Spune că nu poate veni la telefon, instrui T.J. Pe moment, are mâinile legate…
Chiar dacă era dezamăgit că nimeni a râs de gluma lui, T.J. n-o arătă.
― Dacă tu te pregăteai pentru un act sexual complicat cu legături, sigur ai fi dat drumul robotului, spuse Fox, gândind cu voce tare.
― Întotdeauna, răspunse T.J.
Fox, care purta pe lângă salopeta albă şi mănuşi de latex, ridică receptorul.
― Da?
Un glas bărbătesc întrebă:
― Faci clisme?

I received an advance review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is an excellent crime thriller series. I really enjoy the author’s use of appropriate slang and colloquialisms. It makes the series very authentic. This was a real page-turner. I felt like I was looking down the barrel of the pistol aimed at Maddy as the killer’s finger closed around the trigger. Madeleine has a new Guv and a new member of the team, DS Crawford, both of which are very interesting additions. They delve into the seedy world of BDSM in order to find the killer and the man who was trying to keep his obsession secret and who never meant for anyone to get killed. I hope the author continues this series as I would love to read more about D.I. Madeleine Fox, her friends, and coworkers. I would like to see the author bring back the character, Frank Morenko, in some capacity in the future. Anyone who enjoys reading crime thrillers should read this series. I feel Colin Falconer is in the same league as John Sandford.

An exciting, clever, fast paced murder mystery.
The murder of a prostitute in the fringe world of BDSM provides a dark, gritty backdrop to Madeleine Fox's London. She has to wade through sexist colleagues, politicians, as well as enter into the seedy world of BDSM in order to root out a killer.
This novel is a real page turner. There is nothing tedious or drawn out. The chapters are nice and short and they make the novel flow quickly. I liked how the author gives us the perspective of some of the characters without complicating things and without making it predictable.
I also loved all the dark humour in the novel, as it prevented it turning into, what could have been, quite a bleak tale.
I loved the main character Madeleine Fox and will definitely be looking out for more detective work from her in the future.

In this second book of a British detective series, a young female DI who is trying to move up in her career finds herself investigating the murder of a female in the basement of a BDSM parlor. With as gruesome a subject as this, I must add that there is humor used between the DI and her partner and their schmuck of a boss. If you enjoy thrillers and crime novels, this is up there with the best. My thanks to the author and LibraryThing for a complimentary copy.

I received this book free in return for an honest review. I loved it. I do like crime books and this was a good one. I got my notebook out to take notes for the review, then got so caught up in the story that I forgot to take any notes. The characters well fleshed out; some I liked, some I didn't. I thought I guessed the ending but I hadn't. Great book.
