„ But the problem with moments is when you know you won't have any more of them, they become infinitely more significant.

I wish I had treasured the moments more at the time but that's the problem with moments, you never know when you are about to have your last one.“

description

The Second Love of my Life is a story about a young woman named Rose who lost the man she supposed to spend her life with. Two years after the horrible accident that left her without her husband, she is still trying to pick up the pieces of herself.

description

Saying that I liked this book would feel like underrating it. Saying that I loved it would still feel like underrating it.
That is the problem when it comes to reviewing a book you feel like is one of the best pieces you have read in months.
No matter how hard you try to put your feelings out there, you just feel like there's no review that could do it justice.

description

I am so grateful that I had an opportunity to read this book and to discover this amazing writer while she is still a debut author.
Victoria Walter's writing style is so beautiful
and I have a feeling we will read a lot of her work in the future. At least I hope we will.

She captured Rose's inner struggle in such a beautiful and yet realistic way, that I, as a reader, wanted to transform myself there, in an imaginary town called Talting, and be there for her.
It was hard at some parts reading how terrible Rose had felt, but at the same time, there was beauty in it.

description

Reading this book was a bautiful experiance.
Books like this one are the reason why I read.

I liked every character in this book, which is a rare thing for me.
I already read Walter's short story The Summer I Met You (and I liked it) in which we follow Rose's best friend Emma. Even though I liked her there, I can honestly say that I liked her here, as a side character, even more.

I loved the atmosphere in this book. Reading about small towns and it's residents are what I usually enjoy and reading about Talting was no exception.

However, my favorite part in this book was the one that's taking place in Scotland.
The reason for that is not the place, but the realisation that came to a certain character there.

Overall, reading The Second Love of My Life was an emotional ride I am glad I took.

I am so happy I discovered this author and I can't wait to read her next book, even though I don't know when that will be.
At this point, it doesn't even matter, because this book convinced me that it will be worth waiting for it.
In the meantime, I am sure I will re-read The Second Love of My Life few times (or more).

Rose is morning the early death of her husband who was only 24 and killed by a drunk driving accident - Rose is also an artist and decides to sell all her paintings - enter Robert, who not only buys all her paintings but eventually steals her heart.

This is a story i enjoyed reading although some of it went on a bit. Descriptions of feelings were repterative, although they were heart felt and you can feel more with the character. The story is bloody good and with the unexpectied turns and twist, it sure has you sat on the edge of your seat. I think its let Cecelia Ahern and more Trisha Ashley. Ceratinly a book i enjoyed reading and one i would recomend

This reads like a fairytale romance......but with a difference.

Rose lost Lucas and she was devastated. Her first love. Her soul mate. She was married and she had it all. A true life of what good fairytales are made of.

But like all fairytales, there comes a sting in its tale.

I couldn't help comparing my life with my husband who I have known since I was 16 and I am turning 58 at the end of this year, married for 35 years this year.
He is my friend, he was my friend before we fell in love, he still is my friend. Yes we used to argue, yes nothing was perfect, but you know what I mean when I say, you know each other inside and out.
They don't judge you, and when others misunderstand you, they understand you because they know you from your heart, from the depth of your kidneys and back.

Rosie had that kind of a marriage.

How can see ever pick herself up from that?

We see how the author gradually helps her find herself, go from being a couple to a person again in her own right, her individuality emerge, piecing herself together bit by bit.

There was a lot of hype surrounding this story and I always get nervous when I get around to reading something like that, scared it may not lead up to my perceived expectations because I am expecting more from it because of the hype.

I can honestly say, this is a beautiful read. I enjoyed every word.

My thanks to go the PA and Bookbridge plus the publishers for sending me this book

"I don't think love is about letting go; it's about treasuring it whilst you still have it in your life."

After seeing that my university library offered this fiction book within the little cove-section of the library, I decided to pick it up. Out of all of them, this one stood out to be as I liked the sound of the title 'The Second Love of my Life'. I took it out for loan, hoping that I would actually finish a book as I personally hadn't picked one up for years!

It did sit in my room for a goof few months; I had only read a few chapters of it. I was determined to finish it so I renewed and renewed and renewed it so I could keep hold of it over lockdown. Once I finished my exams, I sat and actually enjoyed a whole book!

This is a wonderful story about an artistic character called Rose whose husband died from a tragic event. I felt for the character as this feeling must be unthinkable and unbearable. Being in a tight-knit community called Talting, everyone knows your talents, secrets and business, so starting life with a new mysterious man has challenges within itself...

I will give this book 4 stars, the author is called Victoria Walters who is always active on Instagram and is so lovely! I am hopeful to read the rest of her books.

First book review definitely has to go to this one! A story about grief, loss, love and finding yourself amidst it all. So heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. An absolute favourite book of mine.

Very predictable, and I had to force myself to finish it. What I really didn't like is that the Author takes a lot of pages repeating herself on the same idea.

Review:
As soon as I saw the gorgeous cover of Victoria Walters' debut novel, I wanted to read it. The lovely bright colours and eye catching image stood out among rows of other cover images.

The setting of Talting really struck a chord with me, being from a small town in the Westcountry myself, but the close knit community in the book brought to mind a smaller place than a town, perhaps a village or hamlet. The descriptions of the environment are good and I could picture most of the scenery without much difficulty.

Rose is a likeable, believable character, if a little naive, and seems fairly typical of a lead female in a romance novel. The minor characters gave good support, but I found Robert a bit hard hard work. I get that he is meant to be mysterious, but I just didn't find him very believable, unfortunately.

The Second Love of my Life is an easy to read romance that has elements of sombreness. It is rather predictable, but that's not out of the ordinary for the genre and doesn't detract from the story.

Thanks to Headline Review and NetGalley for providing me with a copy, in return for my honest review.

Very nice romantic novel.

I loved all the characters and Talting.

A sad read, but it was great to see that even though something so awful happened, it's possible to survive it.

Can you ever love more than one person? That’s the question Victoria Walters asks in her debut novel The Second Love of My Life.
Widowed in her twenties after losing the love of her life, Rose is left shattered and broken. The town where she grew up holds such bittersweet memories and she can’t fathom how she is supposed to carry on living without her beloved Lucas. She can’t even pick up the paintbrush and paint like she used to – she’s lost her biggest muse. However her fortunes might be about to change when someone appears interested in her paintings…
Can Rose rediscover life, laughter and maybe even love?
From the second I saw the cover of this BEAUTY I was sold – I mean, damn how beautiful does it look?! (Plus the title was one huge selling point.)
I’m forever intrigued by the notion of ‘the one’ and often wonder whether there really is just one person out there for us all or whether we have the capability to love different people at the same time. Rose’s story is one that captured my heart from the second I started reading – no one could ever know what they’d do if their husband was killed, let alone when they’ve only been married a short time and have their whole lives ahead of them. I wanted to engulf Rose in a hug constantly – the way she dealt with everything was incredibly admirable.
The beautiful setting of Talting and Rose’s little cottage had my imagination running wild throughout and I could so perfectly picture her strolling along the beach, having drinks in the inn and walking home under the starry sky. There were so many times I wanted to hop into the pages and join her.
Whilst Victoria paints a vivid setting, her skills lie in creating tangible and effective emotive scenes. There were so many times during this book where I could feel myself welling up, there were moments when I wanted to hurl my kindle at the wall and there were even some parts where I couldn’t control the gargantuan smile that was taking over my face – I hate to use the phrase but I truly did go on a roller-coaster ride of emotion. The ending had me crying such happy tears and I think that’s what I loved most about this book – it was bittersweet. It wasn’t overly sad but it wasn’t overly joyful; it was the perfect balance of emotion that was required to tell this story well.
Victoria introduces other characters into Rose’s story who all work together to provide such a supportive and loving network around her. Some of them were characters who I warmed to instantly and some I had to learn to like for example Lucas’ mum; there were times when I thought she was selfish but if I thought about how I’d behave in her position I realised it was probably exactly the same! I came to love her very quickly after that realisation.
There is so much more that happens in this book that I’m not even going to touch on as I want to provide a spoiler free review but trust me when I say it gets even better.
This is one of the most beautiful debuts I’ve ever read. It made me want to hug those I love even tighter and tell them more often how much I love them. If this is Victoria’s debut then I am incredibly excited to see what will come from her next…surely it can’t get any better than this?!
A brave, beautiful and breath-taking story about one woman and her search for happiness after her whole world falls apart. A must read for 2016.

Victoria Walters’ debut novel, The Second Love of My Life, is a must read for fans of women’s fiction. Set in a coastal village in Cornwall, Walters explores themes of love, grief and survival in this satisfying narrative.

Rose Walker was once known in her small village for being an up-and-coming artist, however now she is branded as the woman who was widowed at twenty four. The story begins two years after the tragic event involving a car collision between her husband, Lucas, and a drunk driver. Since then Rose has wallowed in her grief and not picked up a paintbrush; therefore the upcoming village fair will be the last time she ever sells her paintings.

A stranger, Robert Green, shocks both Rose and the community by purchasing all of her remaining artwork for an extortionate amount of money. Intrigued by this mysterious man, Rose begins to creep back out of her shell, exploring feelings she has not felt for quite some time. However, just as she believes she cold fall in love again, Robert reveals he is not the man she thought he was.

In a way there are two focuses of this novel. One is Rose’s love life and the other is her artwork. The former is obvious from the title alone. “The Second Love of My Life” suggests that the protagonist has been in love before, and falls in love again. There was a danger of this story becoming predictable: girl is heartbroken, girl meets man, girl falls in love, something bad happens, bad thing is resolved; however the inclusion of Rose’s (former) passion for art gives the book a unique streak.

Many artists will be able to relate to (even if they have never been brokenhearted) the feeling of being unable to produce work – a mental block. The Second Love of My Life reveals the trials Rose goes through in order to get her life back together by forcing herself through the barriers her mind has created in order to deal with her deeper emotions. Although it was Robert that inspired Rose to begin painting again, she does this mostly by herself, showing the reader that she is a strong, capable woman who does not need a man to save her – getting the man is an added bonus.

Whether because this is a first novel, or whether it is Walters’ writing style, there are times when it is difficult to tell what is speech and what is the main character’s internal monologue. Occasionally I found myself wondering whether the lack of speech marks was an editing error or intentional.

The Second Love of My Life has been likened to the works of Cecelia Ahern (author of P.S. I Love You), which is admittedly the reason I chose to read it. Whilst Walters’ writing is not quite up there with the popular authors, there is no doubt that one-day she will be. This is an impressive debut and definitely an author to look out for.

Artist Rose had her whole life come crumbling down on her, the day she got that knock on the door, with the news that her childhood sweetheart, and husband of only two years, Lucas, had been killed by a drink-driver.

Two years on, and Rose’s life is in limbo. She feels like she can’t move on with her life, that she will never be able to be happy again, and that her painting days are numbered, as she hasn’t been able to pick up a brush since that fateful night.

The paintings that she had already painted before her husband’s death, now only bring back painful memories, so they must go.

When Robert comes to town and snatches up all of Rose’s paintings, he ignites something in her that she hasn’t felt for a long time. But can she truly ever feel happiness again?

‘The Second Love of my Life’ is set in the picture-perfect fictional seaside town of Tatling, Cornwall. With her vivid descriptions, Victoria brings Tatling into your heart, and has you wishing that it was real. You will get swept along by the idea of this idyllic place where the villagers are all exceptionally friendly, the beach is inviting, even on rainy days, and the relaxing atmosphere will melt away your stress.

Rose is a beautiful, loving, young woman who has been through the most devastating time in her life. She will have you warming to her and wanting to comfort her, as she tries to move forward in her life, whilst at the same time trying to cling on to the past.

Lucas was her everything. He made her smile everyday, and she loved him with all her heart. She feels numb inside, one minute wanting to think about Lucas, and the next trying to get him out of her mind.

You do feel at a loss when reading the book, as you know that this is a fictional book, with a fictional character, and yet you just want to tell her that everything will be okay, and that you are there for her if she needs a shoulder to cry on.

The raw emotions that Rose feels, especially towards her art is heart-breaking at times. This is a very talented woman who needs an outlet, and her art would be perfect, yet she feels to scared to even pick up a brush.

You know that there is going to be some kind of love interest with Robert, by the very title of the book, yet it was nice to see that the author didn’t just jump in quickly and throw the two together. I was not prepared for the twist though, yet I knew something was coming, and in fact I thought that it was going to be worse than it turned out to be.

The book was quite a difficult read for me, as I had very recently lost my dad, so emotionally reading about someone dying and what their loved ones go through hit a nerve, but Victoria shares lots of words of wisdom throughout her book. Words that I will keep with me forever.

Grippingly beautiful, each chapter had me hooked. A fantastic début from an author I feel we will see much more from.

The Second Love of My Life is the debut novel by Victoria Walters.

Rose Walker has life figured out by the age of 22; she lives in a beautiful small town, Talting, on the Cornish coast in a townhouse next to the sea with her husband-to-be Lucas; she has lots of wonderful friends and neighbours, and works in a bar, but is also a renowned local artist.

4 years later Rose has lost her husband and her inspiration. Lucas was killed in an accident and Rose has been unable to paint since. A story in a local paper about the annual fair mentions that Rose has not done any new paintings since she lost her husband, and explains that what could be her final creations will be on sale at the fair.

Talting is a very small town, so when Robert arrives to snap up Rose’s paintings news spreads quickly. Robert is a corporate lawyer, who is unhappy with his job, his family and life in general. He only intended to be in town for the fair, but when he meets Rose there is an undeniable attraction between them.

Can Rose move on and allow herself to love again?

Robert also has his demons, and is very aware of her recent loss and that they are the subject of local gossip. He seems to be gentle and understanding when Rose runs hot and cold towards him, but he is definitely hiding something; will they be able to help each other move on from the past?

I’m sorry but I really didn’t like this book; I didn’t like any of the characters, in particular Rose seemed to be selfish and a terrible friend. Robert immediately after meeting people starts complaining about his father, how much he makes him work, all of the pressure he puts on him…so get another job? It all feels very teenage angst.

I’m probably not the target demographic for this book, it would be more appropriate for someone in their late teens/ early twenties. I thought that sections of the dialogue, especially between Rose and Robert, were unnatural and quite melodramatic, almost like an episode of Dawson’s Creek. To be fair, when I was 15 I loved Dawson’s Creek. This similarity wasn’t helped by the occasional Americanisms the author uses throughout the book -it’s a toastie, not a grilled cheese.

The parts of the book which felt real were the interactions between Rose and her cat Taylor; I would imagine this is because the author owns a cat (I’ve seen pictures on Twitter, he’s adorable).

I actually feel a bit mean; this is the authors first novel, which is an incredible achievement. I’ve tried to write and I usually give up after 3 chapters. This book was sent to me via

Firstly i dont really know where to start with this review and its actually taken me ages to write it the way i want it to be.
After reading the prequel to this, This Summer I Met You. I could no wait to get back to Talting and find out what what was happening with everyone. Although Emma and John are in this story, this is more based on Rose, who lost the love of her life, Lucas 2 years ago in a car accident.
For Rose those two years have passed in a world of grief leaving her wishing things could have been so different. Rose is an artist and can not get the spark back to paint again. Rose decides to sell her art work at the local summer fair. It is here where Robert comes on the scene, he shows a big interest in Rose's art work but also in her life aswell. Stirring up feelings for Rose that she never thought she would have again after losing Lucas. There is more to Robert than meets the eye, which we come to find out in the middle. Although i had a couple of ideas what it might have been, i did not call what it was. As we continue to follow Rose amd her journey, will she find happiness again after such a devastating couple of years?.
Victoria has written this just beautifully, i can not give enough praise to this woman. Not only does this show in her writing but in her own personality aswell. She captivates her descriptions so well and allowed us to feel the emotions amd daily struggles that Rose was going through. I wanted Rose's paintings to jump out at me, i so wanted to turn the page and find pictures. I, myself got lost in the vivid descriptions of Rose's paintings.
I loved how she went off to Scotland for some 'me' time on a retreat. I love how the story just fitted so well and nothing seemed rushed.
Parts of the story struck a very personal cord with me. Although emotional, this is not a sad story. Its uplifting, Its about hope and moving on. Its about how life never stops no matter what happens.
Victoria Walters is one to watch out for and im pretty sure it wont be too long before her next book is on the horizon.

The Second Love of my Life is a beautifully written, inspiring and uplifting book about one woman's journey to a second happiness in her life.

Rose is young, but widowed, when the love of her life Lucas suddenly died, and two years on she is still coming to terms with it all. She used to be known before that as an artist in her native town of Talting in Cornwall, but hasn't painted since Lucas passed. When Rose decides to sell the rest of her paintings she doesn't expect to meet Robert, who loves her paintings and slowly works his way into her life.

There is a huge shock right in the middle of the book that I would never have seen coming, and in the aftermath of it, you see just what an amazing person Rose is.

I loved the whole of this book, from the loving community feel of the Cornish village, to her close friendship with Emma and John, to the new pet she gets that is just the start of the changes in her slowly re-opening her heart to love, all the way to some of the descriptions of paintings and just what Rose is feeling.

There is a section where Roses's feelings are talked about quite in depth, but in such an eloquent way, I did stop and take note of just how wonderful the writing was.

Before I started this story, I had assumed it would be a slow emotional, possibly sad story, but what I discovered very fast what a wonderful turn of phrase Victoria Walters has, just how upbeat, and hopeful the story is. The Second Love of My Life is a very impressive debut novel, from an author I suspect could have a promising future in writing.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and Headline for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

Can you ever love just one person?? I actually believe that you can and Victoria Walters fabulously told novel is both genuinely brilliant and honestly real. Rose has had a tragic emotional drama and this affects Rose's artistic strength as well as her emotional one.As ever in truly romantic style she meets Robert and here we see the sun through the rain for her.

Victoria writes a gorgeous summery and heart rending tale and I loved it. Hugely recommended.

The narrative is extremely repetitive and the main character comes across at times as more than a little pathetic and completely self-absorbed! It's still readable, but just don't expect more from it than you would a run-of-the-mill romance.

This got some good reviews so I took a punt but, despite the author's ability to write articulately it felt bland and unimaginative, her husband died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver and her mother died of cancer? I'm not sure I can think of two more stereotypical causes of death.

Later we ere told that Rose is not a girly girl but she's not much of a tomboy is she if she struggles with an easel and finds replacing a light bulb a challenge... "How the hell do you put this up?’ Emma demands, bringing my attention back, and I chuckle at her struggle with one of the easels. ‘That one is always tricky,’ I say, remembering cursing it myself when I first got it, Lucas coming into the room to find me on the floor with it collapsed on top of me. He laughed about it for months. The curse of someone not practical being married to someone annoyingly so. ‘I know a trick,’ I tell her, taking it and managing to put it up. I had to learn to do a lot of things by myself – changing a light bulb for the first time, for instance, involved fusing all the upstairs lights one night in the cottage"

Perhaps I am simply too old, I think this book might well appeal to teens who would probably think it was very grown up but to someone of my age it seems very juvenile.

The prologue set a warm and cosy scene and although I knew what was coming I liked the calm feeling it started me off with. Thankfully the initial sadness I had expected wasn't as overwhelming as I thought it would be. The author had a very gentle writing style which seemed to make everything easier to take in.

The characters were all likeable and in no time at all I felt like I knew them all personally. Robert, however, held a touch of mystery. I got the feeling there was something not being said, something just below the surface waiting to be revealed. I couldn't wait to find out what that was and when the revelation arrived I keenly wondered how it would affect the rest of the storyline. What an intriguing twist!

There was so much to learn from this story. The words 'life goes on' danced around my mind as I read through each scene and, while I could wholeheartedly understand why Rose was reluctant to move forward, in my mind I was egging her on.

The events that followed held my attention completely - I found myself thinking about Rose and her friends even when I was going about my everyday life.

This was a beautifully touching read that brought more than a few tears to my eyes. It got me thinking about life, those I love and how important it is not to take them for granted.

"You can't make someone grieve the way you wish they would. You don't have a choice in how you handle it. You just feel the way you feel."

This was not on my TBR, but I chose to read it because it covers one of my favourite themes - grief. Rose Walker lost her childhood love, her husband Lucas in a tragic accident and is suddenly widowed at the age of twenty four. She struggles to cope with the loss, and to be inspired to continue painting again. As a writer, I relate so much to Rose's artistic traits, of trying to express your emotions to your craft, of feeling empty and uninspired after a loss, and of choosing to be an artist despite how hard it is. It was a surprisingly enjoyable read, as Rose deals with her grief, and to truly use art as a form of getting in touch with one's feelings.

Not a great novel from my point of view. Its about a woman called Rose who loses the love of her life Lucas in an accident. She know that she must go on but she's not sure she knows how. It is a typical fairy story with fairly tangible characters and a somewhat emotionally charged story line but it didn't really gel with me.

It was very predictable and lacked substance with no curve balls to keep the interest going. I did get a bit bored and confess to having skim read a lot of the book looking for something exciting to happen but it didn't.
I suppose it is an adequate holiday read but nothing exceptional and instantly forgettable. Sorry I can only give this 2 star rating.

I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.

A heartwarming tale of love, loss and second chances from Victoria Walters. Until recently Rosie had the perfect life she was a talented artist, she married Lucas the love of her life and her best friend and lived in Talting, a small town in Cornwall. Two years ago tragedy struck Rosie and she became a widow at 24. Rosie knows that life must go on but she is struggling to do that and also she finds she can no loner paint. The a newcomer in the form of Robert, a handsome stranger arrives in Talting looking to buy Rosie's paintings. Can Robert help Rosie to realise that live must go on and it is possible to love again. How will Rosie react when she discovers the secret he is hiding and what does it mean for their future?

This book took me ages to read, and not because it was a bad book. It was a sad one, you know how some books just speak your worst fears, this one did that. I put myself in the characters position easily (great writing) but at the detriment to myself. This book took so long to read because it made me so sad , especially the beginning. I did end up tearing up all through the book. However that is a testimony to how well the book is written and how well grief and the characters are portrayed. The book ends in a really sweet place and the main character goes on a huge journey throughout. Great book just might need tissues

An emotional and charming second chance story.

The Second Love of my Life is an absorbing book about love, life, loss and moving forward. The story is well crafted and the author has created characters that I, as the reader, connected with as I laughed and I cried. I so felt for Rose, Robert, Emma and John as they faced tragedy and loss and loved when they experienced joy. As I read, I wished I that lived in a heartwarming community like Talting. Please be aware that the book does handle, in sympathetic ways, subjects that may be triggers for some readers including drunk driving, suicide and miscarriage.

Where on earth do I start with this review? I'm just going to apologise now as I've written the below words three times already and I really don't think my review has done the book justice. Its definitely one not to be missed on your summer holidays this year!

The Second Love Of My Life is a gorgeous début novel from Victoria Walters, I was briefly introduced to her writing and the settings of this book in her short story prequel, The Summer I Met You, which was quite frankly was bloomin' amazing - check out my review for that, here.

The Second Love Of My Life though, was on a completely different level. It absolutely blew me away...

Rose is struggling. Not only with her art work but its fair to say life in general. She was happily married to Lucas, her childhood sweetheart, but tragic circumstances took him away from her.
To begin with we aren't sure what really happened to Lucas but an incident at Rose's work soon makes it clear - but that is just one small element of the story. Other elements include Rose's relationship with her best friend Emma and her husband John, and how Rose deal's with things happening in their life that she feels should be happening with her and Lucas. There's also her parents in law whom are grieving in their own way and the book looks at how relationships continue as life paths change - Rose really is a remarkable character.

Rose's world takes another unexpected turn when Robert comes into her home town of Talting. He is interested in buying her old art work, and there is instantly a little spark between the pair with is quickly replaced on Rose's part with guilt. However they spend more and more time together but no sooner as a force pulls them closer, one pulls them back - if it wasn't her guilt it was Robert closing up - this left me as the reader pondering over what this man's story was or what he was up to...
I didn't have too long to wait and I was quite shocked at the outcome of his background which happens around the middle of the book - yes I know I'm being utterly vague but that's just tough as I completely urge you to read this book and will go as far as to say this could be the book of 2016 for me!

The Second Love Of My Life completely played with my emotions. It made me cry on more than one occasion and after my tweet in the pic below, I felt it was going to be a really soppy read.

Yes there were emotional, hang on I need tissue moments but equally there were parts within the book I felt like I really connected with the story too, I had to pause reading to take a moment and process it. It's made me think on things that have happened personally within my life, things I'm forever beating myself up over or blaming myself for, but Rose's story has shown me that we get a second chance in life and it should be lived fully as some things can't be changed.

I loved seeing Rose find herself again - not just in her love and work life but with her friends too - its hard to grasp when your grieving how the lives of others continue forwards.

The Second Love Of My Life was in no way a depressive book though - there were some really touching moments and Roberts clumsiness brought humour to the story, but there was also a real lightness to the book which kept the story interesting and fresh.

It was a real life affirming and uplifting novel.
A novel of moving on and dealing with grief, learning to live and love again.
A novel of appreciating what you have and learning to live for the moment.

Victoria Walter's has a delightful writing style. There was so much written on the pages yet the words, which were told by Rose in the first person, flowed beautifully.
There were a lovely set of characters, each with a special link to Rose, but whom came with realistic and true challenges to people grieving and moving on.

The Second Love Of My Life was also brilliantly descriptive. There was a particular part in the book where I can a 'lightbulb' moment - I'm the first to admit I'm a sucker for pretty book covers, and this one is no exception, however at this one point of the book, Rose's art work is being described and as I was reading it, not only could I picture the paining on the canvas, but I could see the book cover unfold and I was finding myself thinking 'ah that's why there's trees and birds'
There are pretty book covers and then there are pretty book covers that completely relate to the story, and this is one of them.

For me, the whole book was a joy to read and took me on a complete rollercoaster of a ride. It shattered my heart then just as I was mending, Victoria threw another curve ball to shatter it once more. As Rose was building her life up, I felt I was passing her the bricks.
Even though its a work of fiction, it was true to life too - we are often thrown curve ball's or dealt a rough hands which sometime's feel like they are on repeat every time we pick ourselves up and Victoria reflected on this in her story with Rose.

For anyone that actually reads my reviews (thank you!) you will know that I adore a good epilogue - this didn't fail me one bit and I enjoyed the fact it was set quite a while later...
Honestly, I just cannot praise this book enough!

I've no doubt that anyone who picks up The Second Love Of My Life won't enjoy it or get something positive out of it. It's just one of them books that will stay with you for a while, and for that reason there is no other rating I can give other than the top one of being placed on my
extra special books page.

Story was totally predicable and a little strange I think I would of preferred if there was no connection between Robert and Rose via Jeremy.I don’t like art so found all the art talk boring and a bit repetitive.I struggled from 60% onwards and skimmed the last few chapters.
I never really connected with Rose but really warmed to Emma and John.

I think I found this book a little young adult/ juvenile.

Get ready to cry

I absolutely loved this book, so much so that it was 4am & I was still reading, unwilling to fall asleep without knowing the ending!
Be ready to cry your heart out though (and I'm not a big crier usually) There is much emotion in this book, sadness, anger, guilt but also happiness and sooo much love. I would 100% recommend this book x

Rose seems to have everything, her beautiful marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Lucas, her burgeoning career as an artist and a wonderful relationship with her best friend, Emma. But the fickle finger of fate strikes and Rose's life is changed in a heartbeat when she is widowed at twenty four. Lost in grief, Rose's home town of Talting in Cornwall do everything they can to protect the young widow but, as already observed, fate has a strange way of intervening, and for Rose the arrival of a stranger in town brings more than she could have ever imagined.

There's a real sense of community in this lovely story and whilst the town of Talting is fictional, I sense that there is more than a hint of truth to this setting. Living in an area where everyone knows each other's business can be a blessing, and a curse, but for Rose, grieving as she is for Lucas, the camaraderie of the town and her friendship with her best friends, Emma and John brings a warmth to what is sometimes a rather sad story.

The author writes well and there is a lovely sense of anticipation as the story starts to be revealed. I loved the characters, especially Rose who I felt an emotional attachment to from the beginning. The twists and turns in the story are revealed slowly and several times I thought I knew where the story was going, only to have it veer off into an altogether different direction.

I really enjoyed reading this debut novel. I found the story sad but perfectly charming, with a real sense of time and place and a lovely skilful way of allowing the characters to tell their own story which captures the imagination whilst tugging away at the heartstrings.

Hard to believe this is Victoria's debut novel. The way she encourages you to get emotionally involved with her characters is just wonderful. I laughed and sobbed through this story and really want to see some of Rose's artwork.
